The Luka is a pause button for your shower for those who want to save water, shower pets indoors, shave legs, brush your teeth in the shower or elderly with limited mobility.
The Luka was conceived with 2 principles in mind. Create a product that will make peoples lives better and focus on sustainability. After a few months of exercising to get my creative muscles going I realized that the most needy markets were water. I toyed with the idea of making a more efficient desalination plant then couldn’t wrap my head around placing such a costly burden on the public. As I continued to think and brainstorm I put my thinking cap away and jumped in the shower. It was during my shower that I realized that every time I lather I pushed the showered to the side. It was this moment that I realized that I would be making the Luka.
The design for similar devices is cheap, not very durable and don't fit certain shower heads. With Luka our design process started with the most universal design available and we worked from there to ensure we have a product ANYONE can enjoy! The main reason we didn't create a shower head was because after getting over 300 people's opinion we determined that they did not want to replace there shower head, all they wanted was a way to save water!
The Luka was designed to fit any showerhead in the US. But...what if it doesn't fit? No need to worry! Let us know what issues you are having and if we can't fix it. Send it back and we will give you your money back!
No need to readjust water temperature:
The Luka is something we have put our heart and soul to create. We believe it is the best product of it’s kind. Over the last few years we have become pretty excited over something that has the possibility to positively affect people all over the world. Even though the Luka seems silly at first, it is something that you really have to try to understand. Considering the initial goal for the Luka has remained the same throughout the development process, ensure we are creating products that will make people’s lives better with sustainability in mind. We are certain that you will be absolutely thrilled when you get your Luka installed! We should be excited about the future and what it has to offer. Living in fear only creates anxiety and that is the best path failure! Lets change the world and start making great things happen!
We have arranged for manufacturers in China to make the interior mechanism, spring, and button as well as the casing. Once we have funding, we will use it to pay tooling cost, which is the most expensive part of this project.
After receiving alpha Luka we will:
Once we fully verify product quality we will green light a full run which must be 1000 units.
Dec 2013: Request Alpha Luka
Jan 2014: Capture critical feedback/Submit final revision controlled engineering drawing package
Feb - March 2014: first batch goes into production
May 2014: first batch ready for delivery
Jul 2014: second batch ready for delivery
*Delivery dates are pushed back to avoid delays. If all goes as planned we may deliver much earlier!
Why aren't we making it in the US?
Unfortunately, we couldn't find a manufacture that would provide us with a reasonable production timeline to produce the Luka in the States. But if you or someone you know can help us get it made in the US, send us their contact info!
Since the interest in environmentally-friendly and sustainable products is relatively new, and the existence of products such as the Luka being either limited or lacking in innovation and variety, we believe that this idea has yet to gain traction. Therefore, our outlook is encouraging, considering that the Luka fills a need that not many other people have looked into.
We need help from the Kickstarter community and beyond to produce our first order. We have already invested a lot of our monies and resources into this project and If we can achieve our funding goal The Luka will become a reality!

We would love to reduce shipping cost but we have yet to find an alternative to USPS international shipping. If you know of a more cost-effective mailer send us there info!
Manufacturing the Luka includes quite a few proprietary parts and may span a few suppliers. Our number one priority is to deliver the product on time to our backers. The good news is that John has worked for over 10 years with the same manufacturing companies that we will be making the Luka. We don't take your pledges lightly, and will make sure that we only work with those manufacturers with both good track record and high quality end result.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Standard 1/2 inch tapered threads. This is the standard for home plumbing in America.
The model I used is a prototype. I made it bigger so I can modify and tinker.
Great question by the way, I hope I didn't confuse too many people. I will be sure to add this to the FAQ's.
1. That one is fixed to that showerhead
*note: there is a device similar to the one behind the showerhead that cost $10 but it only lasted me 3 months.
2. You have to press through then back again which makes it really difficult to press and tends to get harder and harder every time you press (I bought several models for testing)..
3. Some people don't want that model since they believe it runs very low pressure. I'm hoping the Luka encourages these people to at least pause while lathering or shaving.
Those are the first issues I could thnk of but the major driver for me was my survey. After asking people how they felt about replacing there showerhead with a low flow model, numerous stated they tried it and returned it due to the low pressure. I know it sounds strange but those were my results.
The main difference is quality. The current models are cheap, difficult to activate, and from my experience and the reviews of other users, they are not durable and usually stop working or start leaking after just 3-5 months. A few people emailed me this:
"It doesn’t make sense to me that the same company that is selling me the water is providing me with low-quality products.”
It’s not just that the Luka, the product, is different, our vision, compared to other companies, is coming from a different place. I have conducted a few surveys throughout the U.S. and determined that people are completely unaware that water scarcity is an issue, even after receiving drought ads and water company notices in the mail. My personal goal is to bring awareness to the issue of water scarcity AND provide a component to the solution.
I figured, why not make one product and try to make a real difference.
