Ok, so we are a band called The Lisps. We write songs, we play shows, argue, laugh at each other, make records, and tour, BUT GUESS WHAT? We also wrote a frickin' MUSICAL!! For more than two years, we have been developing FUTURITY, a Science Fiction, Civil War music-theater work which examines the simultaneous human drive towards both destruction and creation, the malleability of the past and the future, and the feverish pace of technological innovation. It's about a Civil War soldier, a brilliant scientist, and the quest to invent a machine (a steam-powered artificial intelligence to be exact) that can create peace.
We are taking FUTURITY on the road to Louisville, Kentucky in April to participate in Motherlodge, an on-going arts exchange between Louisville KY and New York. Two weeks later we are performing it again at HERE Arts in New York City. We are trying to raise money to:
1.Get us to Louisville i.e. gas money
2. Feed us in Louisville i.e. Peanut Butter and Jelly
3. Costume us i.e make us look good
4. Help us put up the production: props, lights, sound, stamps, parking, postcards, rehearsal space, and on and on.
5. And last but not least help us pay our musicians, singers, director, stage manager, and creative team who are putting in tons of hours to get this show off the ground.
We are trying to create a piece of artwork that takes a tremendous amount of labor and resources, and that doesn't quite fit in any of the pre-existing templates of musical-theater, or typical rock band behavior. Help us breathe life into a piece of performance that is truly original, weird, relevant, and joyful.
Anything you can give would be AMAZING!
Here are some amazing things important people said about FUTURITY:
“Extraordinarily ambitious, engaging, and uplifting live music experience; a celebration of the sheer power of imagination and creativity that – through the meta-narrative of a grunt soldier writing a science-fiction masterpiece - can’t help but pull its own curtain back on the imaginative scope and vision of the show’s creators.” - Ear Farm
“Melodramatic, witty, inventive & downright intoxicating. I was not fully prepared for the sheer genius that is FUTURITY.” - The Music Slut
“A rebellion of sincerity in the sea of cold-shouldered, indie irony.” - Paper Magazine
