The Linear Calendar defies conventional calendar design in order to conform to our natural perception of time. Instead of breaking time into a grid format and separating it into multiple pages, we've created the Linear Calendar to portray an entire year on a single, uninterrupted timeline.

This creates a wonderfully natural sense of time, clearly and visually communicating how many days, weeks, or months between any given dates. Weekends are shaded in light grey and months are separated by a thin black line, transforming breaks in time from mere data to spatial information.

The calendar is roughly 6'6" x 8" and will be printed on gloss poster-stock with a matte finish by a fantastic local printer.

 Usage

The Linear Calendar can be used either horizontally or vertically. It can be written on directly, used with sticky notes, and certainly other methods we haven't thought of.

Dimensions

The Linear Calendar measures roughly 6'6" x 8". We say roughly because the printer may alter this slightly (give or take 6" in length) to facilitate printing operations.

History

The Linear Calendar was born when my team and I realized that every time we planned a project, we would draw a straight horizontal line on a whiteboard, then add deadlines dates to it in timeline fashion. This provided a very clear way to visualize our deadlines and understand how much time we had between each one.

After having drawn the same line on the same whiteboard many a time and having it erased inadvertently or to make space for a more pressing issue, we began to look for a more permanent solution that would accomplish the same task. We began to design the Linear Calendar to fill that need and, after many design iterations and a few prototypes, we have created the product you see in this project.

The calendar in the pictures was printed by the same printer we will use for the Kickstarter production run.

 Manufacturing Plan

To ensure that backers get a high quality product as a reward, a partnership has been created with a high-end local printing facility, who will handle the printing of the calendar. Once produced, we'll roll the calendars into shipping tubes and ship them around the world.

Risks and challenges

Printing will be handled by a local printer who has huge capacity and can fulfill any level of production we require. However, storage and shipment of the calendar will become problematic if we receive an excessively large number of backers. Complications for a project like this are always a risk, and that risk increases with the size of the project.

We can acquire access to larger facilities if the need arises, and we can mobilize friends and family to help pack and ship calendars if the project scales to the point that we can't handle it (quickly) on our own.
