It's important to remember that Kickstarter is not a store but a pledge of your support for designers who are independently bringing a product to life. The interesting side of this risk, and the reason we are turning to Kickstarter, is that you are getting a radically transparent look into the process of how things get designed and manufactured.
We’ve already nailed down our electronic manufacturing supplier for the production of The Light Phone, and have been working closely as we design the phone to ensure that we can manufacture Light. Early prototypes have been produced, however when manufacturing any physical goods there are sure to be unforeseen challenges, both big and small. We promise to be open and transparent in our communications in timing and design changes.
Some of the foreseen risks and challenges:
1) Trade off between battery life and phone thickness
2) Visibility of lights of keypad and display under direct sunlight
3) Contract between The Light Phone and phone carrier.
4) Funding for mass production.
We have engineers managing our daily activities overseas and we will be spending a lot of time in China to ensure design integrity. We feel confident the The Light Phone will be successfully produced, but when manufacturing—especially overseas—some delays should be expected. We have done our best to account for this in our timeline, but we will be updating all of our backers with the latest information until the shipments are made.
The Light Phone is a product we feel deeply passionate about and have being working on it relentlessly for the past 8 months within the Google’s 30 Weeks incubator. And now with your support, we can make Light a reality and bring a little human back into the direction of technology.
