No, the Light Phone is a stand alone phone that functions independently of a smart phone.

The Light Phone is not water or shock proof. We couldn't do this in the form factor we were imagining, however we plan to come out with accessories like a waterproof pouch or indestructible case that can make the phone water / shock proof for certain situations.

The Light Phone stores up to 10 speed dials so that you don't have to memorize the numbers of your loved ones. In addition the Light Phone will have a form of caller ID, where callers will be identified on the screen if their number is saved to your smartphone’s contacts.

Nope! The Light Phone works independently of your smart phone as a stand alone GSM cell phone that uses simple call forwarding to connect to your smart phone. This means you can go as far you want, as long as you still get cell service.

The Light Phone is a GSM phone and can work with any GSM carriers that operates under the frequency band 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz. However, international backers will have to get a local GSM SIM card and manually replace it.

The Light Phone lights up, vibrates and rings (in a very subtle way) when receiving calls. You can turn the ringtone off through the sound switch.

A removable battery will require additional mechanical features on the phone and it won't fit in the form factor that we are going for. We are also designing a custom batter that will maximize the battery life in the limited space of this form. That being said, we have designed the Light Phone to last a very long time and we will do everything we can to ensure the quality of our battery. We will also provide information about how we can recycle the phones, or change the battery out for you when we are a little closer to shipping, it is too early for us to tell exactly. The ringtone of the Light Phone is really really important to us. It has to be ‘Light’, subtle, and beautiful. The last thing we want to do is to completely disurb your moment. We are approaching several musicians at the moment and excited to share our ideas as we develop the sounds for Light.

We are a small team, we are independent and we do not have the scale to reduce our cost, negotiate prices, or remain as efficient as an established corporation that is doing huge numbers. We are not creating a cheap alternative of a cellphone, we are creating a seamless experience to encourage all of us to live happier and live in the moment (and this is just the beginning).

Yes you can. However, the Light Phone comes with 500 prepaid minutes which we think it will last you a really long time since the phone is designed to be used as little as possible. However, if you run out of the minutes, our plan is to make adding minutes really easy through our app. The exact details is TBD at this moment but we will update our backers as soon as we are ready.

***For international backers outside of United States, we apologize but the SIM card and prepaid minutes won't work internationally. You will need to get a local GSM SIM card/plan and manually replace the SIM card. We will provide instruction of how to change it.

There is no voice mail or alert of missed calls on the Light Phone. We designed the phone to be used as little as possible so that we can enjoy living in the moment. The last thing we want to do is to have people worry about missed calls and voice messages and end up checking the Light Phone constantly. Thank you.
