Same for me. First KS Project and instantly a bad choice. Made me choose much more wisely to whom i spent my money. I really believed in it but now i know that i could get more out of my money by burning it and had some warming heat for a few seconds.

    7. Sae-Young Lee on December 12, 2016

First ever KS Project and a total scam! I don't know how a person can live with that!

    8. Hostile Paradox on November 24, 2016

Figures my first kickstarter was a total scam. Anyway to get my money back?

    9. Jason Chlebus on February 25, 2016

This still pissed me off. One of the best kickstarters ever in terms of potential and ultimate let down. What a crock of crap this turned out to be.

Here is some information from Whois for the website he ran. Someone in Germany (Maxon!!!) go see if he is still there.
I waited until Maxon donated 10K to donate. I am quite unhappy with this guy as well. After this I quit donating to any kickstarter. Sorry.

    11. 3DKiwi on September 23, 2015

Hope you enjoyed spending my money Linh.

    12. Matthew Rollins on June 11, 2015

      great news.
contacting the FTC either tomorrow or early next week. I need you American folks to also contact them. The more people contacting them, the more likely it will be that they pick it up. He may jump ship and move to back to China again, but he'll never work here in America again if this goes through!

    13. Resonant Drifter on May 21, 2015

Scammer. He probably logged in of February 2nd to see if it was safe for him to post another bogus project because he already spent all the money we gave him for his "baby". Freeloader. I feel bad for those truly honest and creative people on Kickstarter who actually have dreams and ambition and integrity because scum like this make them look bad. Lowlife. I (don't) hope you're happy, because I know of 609 people who aren't.

"609 backers pledged $65,254 to help bring this project to life." It only took 1 man to kill it.

    14. Ken Liao on March 6, 2015

Kinda how things should have gone...

    15. Matthew Rollins on February 4, 2015

looks like the liar logged in two days ago. too bad he didn't have enough honor or courage to actually say anything to us. i would bet emancipator isn't even going to help this scam artist out any more.

    16. Vanessa Chalub on January 26, 2015

Well, Linh Mai has been active on kickstarter! At least we can see he still is logging in.

Hey man, how about some word for us backers???

    17. Matthew Rollins on September 12, 2014

Dirtbag Mai was active on youtube less than a month ago.…
      Twitter in march
and now there is a paypal donate on his website.
It's been almost a full year since this cocksucker has logged in to kickstarter. fuck this asshole. I hope his career is ruined by all this.

    18. Stephen Cordova on August 9, 2014

Perfect the guy now deleted his Facebook page. Isn't that fan-fucking-tastic! Kickstarter seems to have a 10% scam rate.

I've backed 75 projects worth over $10,000 and I've gotten screwed on 7 of those projects.

Kickstarter you need to get your shit together!

I am really disappointing. I backed this project and have been waiting. Now it looks like we will never see the end product. This brings the failure rate for me up to ~1/3 and has further soured my feeling on Kickstarter. I will have to start being a lot more selective in who I choose to back. I like the idea of helping new artists, but this makes me want to see some history before I give money to a backer.

    23. Ken Liao on May 6, 2014

This would make a great Kotaku article about the pitfalls of investing in a Kickstarter project. I'm truly disappointed. I really thought he was a trustworthy person.

    24. Resonant Drifter on April 30, 2014

This truly is a Lost Cause. Of all the projects I have backed, this is the last one I would have thought to take the money and run. You can't trust anyone these days. Kickstarter won't do anything. They have a clause in their agreement that gives them sufficient protection from this sort of thing. The only thing we can do is bombard him on social media and make him look bad to anyone who might be doing business with him. From the look of his social media, that might be a long shot.

    25. Matthew Rollins on February 28, 2014…
That is his google plus. I suggest you bombard that account and his youtube channel with comments about refunds and what not.

Perhaps this should have been called "The Lost Cause". I was really hoping this was a legit thing, but it has been 3 years and the last post from Mr. Mai was 2 years ago. I wouldn't mind about the length of time this was taking if only he would have kept in touch with the updates and perhaps some proof the movie was being made. I feel used.

Well as most of the links around this project have been removed or are now dead I can't ever see this film / project happening. I can't decide how scammed I feel at the moment but I know there's not alot / nothing we can do either! rather annoyed (to put it mildly!) :-/

    31. Court Campion on January 22, 2014

Sweet. Another wad of cash flushed down the drain. Getting real sick of this shit Kickstarter. You need to invest in some goddamn insurance policies to protect your consumers. Already lost over $200 and not fucking happy.

You can try and email him at but yeah it seems like we are screwed. It's like the third time I get screwed. All kickstarter does is collect the fee (their cut of the scam) and fill their pockets. Their platform really is all about getting payed. It's not about us, whatever they believe.

    33. Matthew Rollins on January 22, 2014

I just talked with a lawyer, he pretty much said we are screwed, not much a lawyer could do with this guy in China. Sorry folks, we've been fucked.

Hey everyone. Just so you are aware. Linh Mai is a scammer. Your money is gone and Kickstarter will do absolutely nothing to get it back. All Kickstarter says is that you can sue if you want to. However, what Kickstarter failed to include in their equation is that Linh Mai is based in China making the process of suing him incredibly difficult for various reasons not least of which is a lack of contact as well as a lack of any evidence that His profile is even real.

Kickstarter helps scammers like Mai, here, and you can all do jack about it.

    35. remube on January 15, 2014

No Infos, no updates. We should bring Linh Mai up before court. I tried severeal time to contact him but never got an answer. The only thing I found was a website from him:

    36. Vanessa Chalub on January 13, 2014

He's a thieving little fuck - Kickstarter wont do Jack shit - be interested to see if they remove this post for using expletives - Ironic if they do - we get no protection , but we're not allowed to swear

    39. Matthew Rollins on November 23, 2013

Yea, kickstarter isn't any help at all. They make millions off this site but do nothing to protect the backers. There is really nothing stopping someone from making a project, getting funded, and then keeping the Money (as we are all learning from this project). learn from this, and remember next time you want to fund a project. I know only fund things from people I know how to get a hold of in real life.

I emailed Kickstarter - they're very apologetic but uninvolved. Pointed me to their ToS:…
      and their FAQ:
which both say that project creators reallyreally shouldn't screw ppl out of their money, but there's no recourse if they do.
I suppose we could all friend-request Linh and then spew all over his fb page. If he wanted to keep us all out, he'd spend half his life checking friend requests against the 609 ppl who donated... ;)
I think that's all the satisfaction we're gonna get - face it, we've been punked.

Has anyone contact kickstarter over this? What have they done. This is theft basically, a promise of an idea, taken my funding and then provided nothing. Contact kickstarter today like I am and get them to investigate this fraud!

    44. David Snell on October 29, 2013

Not my first project backed but it is the first one I am considering a failure. Funding ended May 25, 2011... yet here we all are. From what I can tell not one person has gotten what they expected. Not the film, not a poster, not even the level of communication that would be appropriate. At $65,000 (back in May 2011 that was a pretty decent Kickstarter) even accounting for Kickstarter and Amazon fees (let's say 5% each, or ~$6500 total) that left you with $58,500. I really hope you used that towards The Last Cause and not just a year of fun.
In any case... I will join the group of people asking for a refund. A year, even two seems reasonable to wait for some things if there is communication and a sign of progress. The Last Cause has turned out to be more The Lost Cause it appears.

Linh, You started this project in April of 2011. It is now October of 2013. The last updates were from 2012. I like many other backers here liked and believed in your vision for The Last Cause. However if you were not ready to make the film at the time then you should have held off from starting the kickstarter for the project. Now because of your poor planning and lack of communication to your backers you have a lot of people asking for a refund of their money because they do not believe you are really going to make a movie. I do not blame them. At the very least you should be making regular updates on things that are being done to make this short film. We do not care nor did fund a feature film as you have already stated. I am willing to be patient for a little while longer however I think you owe the people that backed you (including me) more than the dead silence that you have given them. You owe us at the least regular updates on PROGRESS you are making towards completing The Last Cause short film. If your intention is to NOT complete TLC as a short film within the next 12 to 24 months then you should really just refund everyone's money and try to create a new kickstarter when you are ready to start filming and include in your kickstarter an estimated completion date so people don't think you are a scammer. I wish you are prosperous in completing TLC to the quality level you think it should be at.

      Respectfully from a backer.
