To all of you supporting “The Woodshed at The Jazz Gallery”,
THANK YOU! We have passed the 15%
funded mark – and we couldn’t have done that without you. With only 24 days to go, we encourage
all of you to tell your friends about our project. Our goal for this week is to pass the 50% mark - that means
raising at least $5,900 more by Sunday July 24th.
As the week unfolds, we will roll out new benefits, and we
will continue to post new artists’ videos expressing the importance of our
project to offer free rehearsal space for jazz musicians in New York.
This idea for The Woodshed started simmering about 2 years
ago. We noticed that musicians who
play at The Jazz Gallery were calling us to see if they could rehearse in our
space when it wasn’t in use; sometimes they needed a piano, sometimes they
wanted a space to accommodate a large band, and sometimes, they just needed a
central location to pull the members of their band together. At the same time, we began feeling that
our space was under-utilized – there were so many hours in each week when our
space was “dark”. Then, as our new commissioning residency program unfolded
last season, we really saw the importance of providing a space that musicians
could use as a laboratory for new ideas - not just when they performed (that has
been happening at The Gallery for 16+ years) but also as they developed and
rehearsed their new work.
So we started asking musicians what would work for them, and
we realized that the only way to make this project successful is to make the
space available to the artists for free. As E.J. Strickland expressed in our
project video: “There’s a lot of rehearsal spaces out there but they charge a
lot of money, and we don’t always have that money.” And, in the words of Jen Shyu: “That’s what this Kickstarter
So, to all our backers - thanks for supporting us this past
week. And, for those of you who
are considering lending your support to “The Woodshed at The Jazz Gallery”, we
are happy to post Jaleel Shaw’s video about just how important this project is.
Please watch it!
