The Impact Factor Movie is a drama about a diverse group of Philadelphia residents who try to live significant lives, as they collide in interweaving stories of impact. This feature film is a mosaic of interrelated characters in search of power, peace, forgiveness, and meaning in a very noisy world. This movie follows the style of movies like Crash, Magnolia and Grand Canyon by showing the connections between diverse people in a tight geographic area and the impact our small actions have on the people around us.
The Impact Factor Movie was inspired by a true story a Jamaican immigrant told me at one of my workshops.
This kind man was approached by a young woman who said she needed $5,000 or she would be sent to state prison. Everyone told him it was a scam and to ignore her, but as a result of this quiet man’s persistence a ring of extortionists that included a corrupt judge, assistant D.A., and a parole officer was brought down and countless young people were spared.
It’s a pretty tough world out there.
Maybe you’d like to pretend it isn’t so, but there’s no denying the truth.
Hi, I’m Ken McArthur, Producer of The Impact Factor Movie, a drama about people, from all walks of life, who all live and work within a five-mile radius of Philadelphia City Hall.
In this tiny five-mile radius, the powerbrokers of City Hall coexist with the residents of some of the most drug-infested areas of the country.
These people, from all walks of life, are just like you and me … deep in the search for power, peace, forgiveness, and meaning in a very noisy world.
In the style of movies like Crash, Magnolia and Grand Canyon, this movie shows how connections between diverse people in a tight geographic area create the huge impact our small actions have on the people around us.
Meet some of the characters …
DESTINY DRIFTING, a young, driven, political aide for the Mayor of Philadelphia.
Veteran Narcotics Detective ANTONIO PÉREZ and his new trainee, JUSTIN CANTZ who patrol the “Badlands” with a mandate to make arrests and get headlines for ALISTAR ARMSTRONG, a politically ambitious Assistant D.A. who is being mentored by JUDGE CARTER, a corrupt judge, in her quest to take down the Mayor and gain the office of District Attorney for the City of Philadelphia for Armstrong.
Trapped in this world of political power are KOMO GREENE, a young lookout for the drug dealers, JAYLA WILLIAMS, a young woman on parole and BRIANA TAYLOR, a six-year-old innocent girl who Jayla protects.
Doing the Homework ...
To research the movie, I personally went undercover as a rideshare driver in the “Badlands” of Philadelphia.
As a former police officer, I had experienced worlds of hate and fear from the side of law enforcement, but this time I wanted to see that world directly through the eyes of the people that live in these communities.
Finding the Expertise ...
I worked with a three-time Academy Award Winning screenwriter and producer of over 30 films to refine the screenplay.
I build a community of over 3,000 filmmakers in the Philadelphia Area to draw world-class talent from.
Casting for the Best ...
We conducted auditions for the trailer and received over 2,780 Applications for just 6 Key Roles.
We haven’t made our final decisions on casting because casting is often budget dependent, but already know that we have a powerful group of actors who want to be in the production.
Success in film does not always rely on having a famous cast. Blair Witch Project, Napoleon Dynamite, Paranormal Activity, Whale Rider, Fireproof, Slacker, Primer, Gods Must Be Crazy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Repo Man, Outsiders, Goonies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life of Pi and Pan’s Labyrinth are among the many film success stories created without name actors.
That said, stars sell films. For that reason we will be approaching well-known actors to play key roles in the Impact Factor Movie. Since this is an ensemble cast, we have the advantage of using a number of well-known actors for short periods of time which greatly increases our flexibility and ability to attract name actors because of the short time frame required and the quality of the parts available.
These are experienced actors which we've PERSONALLY looked at, evaluated and in many cases asked for specific readings. It's an amazing group of highly talented people to choose from. The list of their credits is LONG, but just to give you an idea, we have applications from actors who have appeared in The Bourne Legacy, The Wolf of Wall Street, Philadelphia, The Godfather: Part III, The Unforgiven, Duplicity, Michael Clayton, The King of Comedy, House of Cards, NCIS, Cold Case, The Wire, Law & Order, One Life to Live, General Hospital, Limitless, Sex and the City, Analyze This and Spin City just to name a FEW!
Working Together ...
I’ve been working toward this for over a decade and I have a lot of skin in the game, but I can’t do it alone. Working together we can do so much more than we can apart. Filmmaking is an expensive adventure and it’s a very challenging project. Not only do we have to design a cutting-edge cinematic feel for the production we have to create an entirely different world to bring home the key principles that enable people to have more impact.
It takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of people and the only way we can make that happen is to get you involved.

Since 2003, Mitch Martinez has been creating visuals and cinematography for everyone from industry veterans to fledgling filmmakers. Credits range from lensing projects for Universal Records, the US Army, to Fortune 500 corporations.
Mitch particularly enjoys shooting feature films has shot many commercial and theatrical works internationally in South Africa, Mexico, Europe, Bahamas, and more.

Michael Engesser, Our Award Winning Composer
Michael Engesser is a composer, music producer and audio engineer. Holding a double degree in Film Scoring and Contemporary Writing and Production from Berklee College of Music and close to two decades worth of experience in the industry, Michael is equally at home in the world of music and audio post production for film.
His work spans soundtrack composition for films and video games, album production, arranging for live performances and audio post production for Netflix and independent films.
Roy Koriakin, Line Producer
Roy Koriakin is our line producer, a crucial role in this process. Roy is a professional Line Producer, Assistant Director, and Writer with over 14 years in the industry. He has worked on over 30 Feature films and 100 National TV episodes. Koriakin has Line Produced 13 episodes of a National Cooking TV Show, 5 TV Pilots, and 9 features films, one that was recently released in over 147 Theaters Nationwide and is on target to gross more than two million dollars across all media markets.
Roy has also been an Assistant Director on 9 Feature films, and over two dozen music videos. Koriakin has written 19 feature films, one that was distributed by Lions Gate, 6 films he has been hired to write and 3 to do rewrites on.
He has written, produced, and conceptualized over 75 TV Commercials and 70 Industrial, Promotional and Training Videos.

Actors/Actresses - One of the many keys to a successful film. You already know who these amazing folks are because they are already on the silver screen in front of your eyes!
Here are a few people you might not know about, but who are just as important to the success of this project!
Director of Photography – The director of photography (D.P.) is in charge of the overall visual look of the film, as seen through the camera. They recommend which cameras and lenses to use for the production. They design the shot’s framing, and the camera movements in conjunction with the director. They are also in charge of the camera crew, lighting design and collaborating with the gaffer.
Gaffer – The gaffer is also known as the chief lighting technician. This person is primarily responsible for developing a lighting plan according to the desires of the Director of Photography. The gaffer informs the best boy and key grip on where and which lights are to be placed. The gaffer is in charge of creating the best possible lighting scenario according to the camera framing.
Grip – Grips essentially “shape the light” that is provided by the electricians. This includes creating pattern and shadow effects, coloring light, diffusing light or blocking light. While electricians set up the lights and cabling, grips provide everything else that is built around the lights to create the quality of light that the gaffer desires. They also provide a variety of special rigging, securing and safety measures on set.
Assistant Director / 1st AD – The 1st assistant director works with both the production manager and the director to make the shooting schedule efficient as possible. The 1st A.D. breaks the script down into a shooting schedule and also helps manage the scheduling of talent, crew and equipment needed for each shooting day. This person sometimes helps direct the background extras in a scene.
Director – The director is the leading creative artist on a movie set. The director works directly with the actors on their performances and has final creative control on almost every aspect of the the film. The director plays a large role in casting, script revisions, shot composing and even editing. Usually, the director is hired by the producer of the film.
Line Producer – The line producer supervises the entire budget of the movie. Expenses may include celebrity salaries as well as daily costs like location and equipment rentals. The production manager reports to the line producer the current expenses and needs of the production on an ongoing basis.
Boom Operator / Utility – This person is responsible for properly positioning the microphone boom pole during the actual filming. The boom operator is the assistant to the sound mixer. Many times the boom operator is required to hold the boom pole for several minutes at a time, which can be physically demanding. The boom operator must also be able to follow the actors movements while staying clear of the camera and lights. This makes it a challenging job for achieving the best possible audio.
Sound Mixer – The sound mixer for film is head of the sound department and is responsible for leveling, monitoring and recording of audio during production. The sound mixer decides which microphones to use as well as placements of the microphones. This person can also mix the various sound tracks and audio signals in real time. A film sound mixer supervises the boom operator and/or sound utility person.
Production Designer – The production designer works with the director and is primarily responsible for the design and overall visual “look” and “feel” of a movie. This includes the use of costumes, landscapes, props and other visual scenery that could reflect the movie script.
Hair Stylist – This person is responsible for styling and maintaining the talent’s hair throughout filming. The hair stylist is usually equipped with all of the appropriate supplies needed for the hair styling process. The hair dresser works in conjunction with the make-up artist to attain the best possible look for the actors and actresses.
Makeup Artist – The makeup artist’s main task is to apply and create a variety of looks on the actors and actresses skin surfaces with makeup, from current trends to classic or period pieces. The makeup artist creates a look according to the director’s desires, often inspired by the characterizations in a story.

Risks and challenges
Every low budget independent feature film has risks and challenges, but with enough preparation, we can mitigate any potential issues!
Risks include, but are not limited to Acts of God (including things like deaths, hurricanes, war, and pestilence), a failure to secure the necessary funding, undependable people, the litigious nature of our society and who becomes the next president and what new laws they pass.
This is hard stuff, so it's imaginable that some of this stuff could happen. In fact, it's pretty likely because bad stuff happens all the time.
The good news is that good stuff happens all the time too!
We are backed by the Impact Family of over 60,000 dedicated fans, friends and partners who all want to make this happen, so let's just make it happen no matter what problems come our way.
Even more good news because we don't have to depend ONLY on Kickstarter.
We're going to raise our budget through a variety of ways!
Kickstarter most importantly gets us to YOU - THE AUDIENCE, but it also helps us get the cast, equipment, and resources needed to kick off this adventure!
That said, we are not depending on Kickstarter for all of the funding, because funding a movie is an expensive project.
The potential funding sources for films are increasing every day. Here are a few of the possibilities for the Impact Factor feature film.
Equity is selling off a portion on your project for a cash investment made to your project by a single investor, a group of investors and personal investments. (friends and family) In most cases, equity investments require that the investor own a stake in the film and in many situations that investment must be paid back before profit is seen on the side of the filmmakers.
Title III of the Jobs Act has created a new opportunity for financing films called equity crowdfunding. For filmmakers, the key element of the JOBS Act is Title III. Prior to its passage, it was illegal for “unaccredited investors” to invest in private companies. You could only get accreditation if you earned more than $200,000 a year, with a net worth of more than $1 million. With Title III, private investment is open to anyone. (Investors whose net worth or income is below $100,000 can invest up to $2,000 or 5% of their annual income or net worth, whichever is lower.)
Pre-sales are agreements made with distributors before the film is produced. A distributor decides how much your project is worth, based on the “package” (the script, the attached talent, and crew, as well as the marketing plan) If you land a pre-sales contract, you can then take out a bank loan using the contract as collateral. In some cases, distributors will offer direct payment. (at a discounted rate)
Once there are solid assets in place, the company is now worth something, so you may be able to get a loan from a bank or a private lender based on collateral. Gap financing is only available when there is adequate security for the investor to leverage.
Individual state and country legislation enable producers to subsidize spent costs for production. Tax incentives require a producer to hire a certain number of local crew employees, rent from local vendors, and run payroll through local services.
Pennsylvania offers a 25% Tax Credit to films that spend at least 60% of their total production budget In the Commonwealth.
Producers are able to avoid costs on a project if they are able to negotiate a deferred deal. Agreements for deferred payment basically allow crew, cast, vendors, locations, and services to render services at no cost or a reduced cost until the film goes into profit.
Incentive Based Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is a method of raising capital through the collective effort of friends, family, customers, and individual investors. This approach taps into the collective efforts of a large pool of individuals— primarily online via social media and crowdfunding platforms—and leverages their networks for greater reach and exposure.
There are thousands of grants available for filmmaking each year. The benefits of a film grant include:
• We do not have the burden of paying the money back.
• Grants often come in larger amounts of money, so it eliminates fundraising in small increments
• Grants provide publicity when the grant is announced
• Grants provides credibility for our project.
The Impact Factor Movie can be made for a $250K budget on an 18 day shoot, but our optimal production budget is $1,086,800.00 with an additional $600,000 or more available for distribution and advertising costs.
That budget could scale up based on the total amount of money we are able to raise through all of our funding resources.
