Typically, lined watch straps are made of 3 layers,
Upper Layer: This is the layer that is shown on the outside when worn.
Filling: Sandwiched between the 2 layers, this could be anything from leather to cardboard or other synthetics.
Lining: Usually calf leather or 'genuine leather'. When the lining is thin or of inferior quality, it can shorten the life span of the strap as it wears out faster.
Hence we have decided to make these straps using only Horween Leather for quality and durability. The upper and bottom side of the leather is made with a single strip of leather. This allows uniform ageing throughout the strap when worn over time.
Founded in 1905, Horween Leather Company is one of the oldest tanneries in the United States, located in Chicago. Well known for their unparalleled level of quality, consistency and innovation, their leathers today are still hand made using old world techniques and equipment with modern day updates in the process.
Characterized by a rich pull up effect which is the temporary lightening of colours when folded or flexed. A 89 steps process over 28 days, it is highly supervised as various naturally occurring materials such as hides, retannages from tree barks and more comes together, increasing complexity when achieving uniformity and consistency. After the initial chrome-based tannage, the hides undergoes vegetable retanning using Horween's guarded recipe before being hot stuffed with a special blend of oils, waxes and greases which is responsible for the pull up effect. Lastly, the hides are hand-rubbed with coats of aniline finish for an even staining. This combination tanning imparts the leather the best of its qualities, making them soft, supple, durable, mouldable for comfort and the ability to develop a great patina over time.
The making of a leather watch strap is a a complex process that consists of multiple steps, it requires the expertise of a highly skilled artisan with a meticulous attention to detail.
The most important aspect of the craft lies in the stitching. Saddle Stitch technique is employed on the full stitch watch straps. A traditional method of hand stitching, it is the strongest form of stitching in the world. Made with 2 independent stitches, a needle is looped on either end of the lightly waxed linen thread and while one is passed through the stitching hole from one side, the other needle passes through the same hole from the opposite side. Once both needles are through, they are pulled taut and the steps repeat till the end.
The making of a full stitch double layered watch strap can take 80 to 100 stitches.
These watch straps are not just hand made but hand stitched using the Saddle Stitch Technique. They will easily outlast machine stitches which will unravel easily when broken, resulting in a damaged and wasted strap.

1) Horween Chromexcel or Horween Chromexcel Distressed
Apart from the usual Chromexcel Leather, we are offering Chromexcel Distressed as well. Chromexcel Leather is a beautiful leather with great pull up effects and patinas well over time. Unfortunately, some parts of the leather don't make the cut as they have wrinkles, scuffs or marks that are too apparent. To avoid wastage, THOS is introducing the Distressed option at a lower price. Being Horween, the structural integrity of the leather is not compromised and they are still tough, however they have a more worn in effect than usual. A good choice for those looking for aged or broken in straps.
Both options are available in Black, Burgundy, Natural and Navy.
2) Stitch Styles: Side Stitch or Full Stitch
Side Stitch: Good for vintage look. Less stitching details. Clean and minimal.
Full Stitch: Good for dress watches or a formal look. Able to complement the dial with various thread colours.
3) Thread Colours
While white and black has been the most commonly requested colour, we do get occasional requests to complement the hands or dial colour.
Match the buckle to your case or you can swap it out for your own buckle.
5) Strap Width
Straight: 16/16, 18/18, 20/20, 22/22, 24/24
Tapered: 20/18, 22/20, 24/22
Able to do odd size lugs just let me know and we'll make a note on our end.
As for strap thickness, it will be between 3.5 mm to 5mm, there will be an option to choose in the survey at the end of the project. As leather thickness can vary slightly throughout the hide, please allow tolerance of +/-0.5mm.
6) Strap Length
To determine strap length, measure your current strap and choose the closest measurements or make necessary adjustments if required.
*Note: Thickness of watch strap can affect the fit. If your current strap is less than 3mm thickness, length of 120/75 and you're wearing the last 3 holes, it'll be good to chose the long measurement here. Please message me if you need advice on this.
All options are available in 4 Colours: Black, Burgundy, Natural and Navy.
DHL Express services available as well at an additional charge depending on location. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information!

Risks and challenges
As all straps are hand made in our studio there is no associated risk with a production company or manufacturer.
Colours have been adjusted to best reflect the colour in real life, however do note that it might vary a little with different monitor screens and display screens.
Timely response to surveys will be highly appreciated, as each strap has multiple steps from start to end and takes a longer production time than the the classic single layer watch strap.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
