Hi Kickstarter Community,
My name is Timothy, and I'm excited to be here with you as I launch my first campaign to create The Half-Boy, an endeavor that seeks to connect people to one another through music and art.
I've been creating music for most of my life. As a kid, I would gather all of my mom's pots and pans, laundry baskets, and trashcans and make drum sets in the middle of my room. I was always tapping my feet, always penning bits and pieces of poetry on napkins and book covers, and generally spacing out and imagining when others were attempting to demand my attention. Over the years, what began as a hobby has now turned into a passion. I create music because I have to. It's the way I connect with the world around me and respond to the world within.
In 2012, I released my first studio album titled "The Breeze." Recorded over a three year period, in the back of tanning salons and a friend's living room, The Breeze emerged as a collection of songs charting the difficulty of creation. I'm really proud of that album, and now I'm ready to record again!
I've booked studio time at Asterisk Sound in Waco, TX to record the first 3 songs of my new album, The Half-Boy, with members of The Digital Age (formerly of The David Crowder Band). This opportunity is not lost on me, and I'm confident that, together, with these accomplished musicians this album will be a meaningful contribution to the conversation. Plus, it's been a dream of mine to lend my voice in this way!!
Comprised of songs relating my own journey toward wholeness, The Half-Boy concept comes from a play I was in when I was a fourth grader. My character was literally a half-boy, fractured by fear and misunderstanding from his community. Sent out by his parents on a journey to find wholeness, completion finally came when he acknowledged his own broken beauty and learned to connect with others. These are songs about yearning and resting. Hope and despair. Wounding and healing. Isolation and belonging. Wandering and home.
One thing that sets this album apart from anything I've ever done, is that I'm inviting folks to experience the music as a community instead of as individuals. Each song on the album is accompanied by a postcard depicting art inspired by that song. The invitation is simple: as you listen to the songs on The Half-Boy, my hope is that the art and the music will become a point of connection between you and someone else; a friend experiencing loss, a family member learning to live in a new way, or a stranger you've just met. As you listen to each song, and a person you'd like to connect with comes to mind, you can take the postcard, address it to that person and place it in the mail. When they receive your gift, not only will they have a meaningful token of your friendship, they'll also have the opportunity to download that song for free because each postcard contains a download code for the song that inspired the artwork. I'm confident that the powers of love, understanding, compassion, and kinship heal the world by healing individual hearts. The Half-Boy aims to bring about that kind of healing by sending expressions of friendship and compassion through mailboxes all around the world.
In order to create a project like this, so many moving parts have to come together. From recording the songs, to commissioning the artwork, to packaging and marketing, all of this will take time, energy, and resources. This project will cost $17,000.00 to complete, so the $6,000.00 that I am seeking through this Kickstarter is only a fraction of the total cost. Anything that is contributed above and beyond our goal will go directly to the recording, production, and promotional costs associated with The Half-Boy. In short, there is no way that this project will turn into the beautiful expression of friendship and compassion I know it can be without the generous support of a ton of people!! So, thank you in advance for your generosity and for sharing this project with others.
As a way of saying "Thank You" for making this project possible, we've compiled some great backer packages for you all. From beautiful, hand-made scarves…
to one of a kind posters…
to incredibly adorable portraits by Aubrey and Eli…
Thank you so much for making this project a reality!
Risks and challenges
Once "The Half-Boy" is funded, the fun will begin. But, as I learned during my last album, sometimes a project that is set to take 3 months turns into the project that takes three years. You set out recording in the studio and end up recording in a tanning salon. But, with the setbacks come blessings. "The Breeze" was so much more mature because of the experiences I had while working on the album.
My expectation is to begin and finish recording during the months of March and April, 2014 and have the album ready to distribute by early summer! However, life happens and albums, like planes and buses and trains, get delayed. If that happens, you can bet I'll be right back at this keyboard keeping you in the loop and working hard to get this album completed in a timely fashion.
The main obstacle at this point is getting the backing that we need to fund the project! But, with your help, I'm completely confident this album will be hot off the presses by the middle of 2014!
