READY TO PRINT! BACK £1 OR MORE FOR AT LEAST 3 GIFTS!
'The Tale of the Greedy Fish' is a fully completed 44 page children's storybook written and illustrated by myself for my daughter Heidi, who will be 2 years old by the end of this project.
This project is NOT FOR PROFIT - the end result (1000+ copies of the book) will be given away free to Kickstarter funders, schools, children's charities and libraries to encourage child literacy and art. One children's charity will be accepting 200+ copies for their UK children's centres and 2 London children's hospitals will also be taking some! Not a single copy will be sold.
All funds after 100% will contribute towards extra books regardless of stretch goals being met (stretch goals just give us a better price per free book).
All backers, £1 up will get at least 3 gifts: A downloadable 'Greedy Success Certificate', narrated video & original PDF, plus...
If we reach both stretch goals and you are lucky in the raffles your £1 donation could get you up to SEVEN gifts worth £850!
I am not making any profit from this project! Please help me beat the original target and get more copies of the book out to kids for free.
The story is about Greedy Fish, who eats all his town's food and is sent into the depths of the sea as punishment. Adventurous pirate treasure-type stuff happens, and with luck on his side, Greedy finally redeems himself. There is an underwater disco to celebrate, including a conga line of dancing mussels (of course).
This project will fund at least 1000 copies of the book. If the stretch goals succeed it could be 2000 or 3000!
After Kickstarter funders have their copies, I will donate copies of the book to as many libraries, children's charities and schools as I can (and of your choice - see rewards), and maybe even do some talks to encourage literacy and art. Supporters have started to build a list of schools & libraries on Greedys Facebook page. I will send any remaining copies of the book to agents and publishers in the hope of having the book professionally published to reach even more kids (old and young!).
I have some great Greedy rewards for funders: access to the original format on-line book AND the narrated video for £1, signed copies of the book, thank you postcards, mouse mats, mugs, t-shirts, your name on the thank you page of the book, even your own character in the book and lots more!
Gifts will be limited, as unless I am lucky enough to be over-funded, I will pay for them from my own pocket (somehow!). I will be personally delivering rewards around a lot of Essex areas to save on postage.
I have paid for an ISBN number from my own pocket (needed for library use), which are only sold in 10’s unfortunately for around £130. Paying this myself will make the Kickstarter target is a little lower, and will mean I am ready to place the print order straight away.
Stampagraphics.com will be professionally litho-printing the book to the highest quality, and have been kind enough to offer a discount to help realise this project. Having seen the proofs, their staff have already requested a few copies for their own children if the project is successful! The book will include a special Kickstarter 'Thank you' page and will not be seen in this format again, making it very collectible.
I have already been in contact with a number of schools, libraries and children's charities around the UK and have arranged to send copies if the funding target is reached - the prospect of free books has been extremely well received as you can imagine.
I would really like my daughter Heidi to have a copy of the book to keep for when she is older as well. I am a pretty average dad, who drives a 10 year old car and works in a normal office job, and I have put all I can into this book in my spare time. There is no way I could afford to carry out a project like this alone, which is why I really need your help - and success in my dream will benefit kids all over the country straight away.
This is my first time illustrating a picture book (or anything!). I set myself the task of making it from scratch for Heidi's 1st birthday, and I am really proud of it and the great response from all that have seen it. It took about 6 months working late into the night, and it has had 3 versions - the original digital version available for just a £1 donation, the new PDF version (£4 donation) and the paper version - which will be available, signed, for children and Kickstarter funders.
The Greedy Fish has a website with some free stuff already available - www.thegreedyfish.com - and a special YouTube learning channel is now available where I intend to add lots of fun educational videos - search on YouTube for 'The Greedy Fish Channel'.
1000 is the smallest quantity of soft cover books I can order of a good enough quality that is cost effective. Smaller numbers of copies worked out at around £12 per copy of the book, which just doesn't make financial sense. The funding amount will cover JUST the printing ready for use in libraries and schools, and Kickstarter expenses for commission and transfer fees.
Other than instant gifts, I will send out all the physical gifts to Kickstarter funders first, before anyone else, hopefully within 1 month, as the book will obviously need to be printed first. This will be followed by all the schools and libraries you put forward.
The proof pages of the book look fantastic, and if successful, this project will give a lot of people a great free book and lots of smiles, and also my daughter Heidi a copy to keep for herself and maybe her kids one day!
Even if you decide not to donate, please tell others about my project and share this link on Facebook, Twitter, your workplace notice board and anywhere else you can think of! If I can help just a couple of kids on their way to becoming readers, I will have achieved more than I ever hoped when I started to scribble Greedy Fish on a post-it note. Thank you for reading, spreading the word and hopefully donating.
Risks and challenges
My only hurdle is raising the Kickstarter funding!
The book is complete and ready to go to the printing press. I have arranged and paid for the ISBN number myself. I have even contacted, and arranged to send copies to some libraries and schools.
I just need your help to realise my dream, and get the printed book made for Heidi, and out to kids across the UK.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
