Frequently Asked Questions
The Ultralight takes the original idea (a.k.a. the original all-steel GRAYL® Legend) and strips out all unnecessary elements. We set out to make the most versatile, convenient, easy-to-use, and affordable purification and filtration bottle; early indications from our reviewers and testers is that we achieved that goal. Some of the notable improvements:
At 10.9 oz (309 g), the Ultralight is unquestionably lighter, in fact it's almost half the weight of the original all-steel GRAYL® Legend. It's equipped with a much simplified and resolute Loop Cap, which unlike the original cap design, this one can be used to clip onto a pack or used as a carry handle. Not to be overlooked is the transparent design for which many early GRAYL adopters had been asking for so they could more easily monitor their supply of clean water. Lastly, the Ultralight is more affordable and a joy to use in comparison to it's predecessors. Reducing the price, without marginalizing quality, was paramount so our technologies could be used by more people globally.Last updated:
The Ultralight is made from safe, durable materials spec'd to perform in harsh environments and withstand abuse commonly associated with trotting the globe, outdoor adventures and responding to natural disasters.
Specifically, the Outer [Re]Fill, Inner Press, Loop Cap and Purifier Cartridge are made from the following materials: polypropylene #5, TPE, ABS and silicone. All of which are food-grade, non-leaching and BPA-free.Last updated:
Mechanical advantage, baby. No big muscles required. We always recommend pressing with steady downward force at a lower height (either on the ground or a level surface no more than 20 inches) so you can leverage your body weight for mechanical advantage. It's the fastest, most efficient, and easiest way to purify water on-the-go with the Ultralight. If you want to test this technique, try from a lower surface and a higher surface (you'll feel the difference).Last updated:
How long does the Purifier Cartridge last? How do I know when it is reaching the end of its lifespan?
Each replaceable Purifier Cartridge lasts 40 gallons (150 L) or about 300 uses (silty water decreases the lifespan). As the cartridge nears the end of its lifespan, water passes through the purifier more slowly. When the press time doubles (i.e. 30 seconds), it’s time to replace your purifier cartridge. Purifier cartridges will be available at retail stores and thegrayl.com for $25 msrp.Last updated:
How can I be sure the Purifier is still working all the way to 300 uses? How do I tell when the replaceable Purifier Cartridge is ready to be replaced?
You'll know the replaceable Purifier Cartridge is nearing the end of its lifespan when the press time doubles from 15 to 30 seconds. Towards end of lifespan, the media become filled with impurities, which reduce the water flow. However, the decreased flow rate actually increases the purifier efficiency, effectively ensuring water remains clean and safe to drink.
During lab tests under NSF/ANSI 42+53 test conditions, our Purifier Cartridge continued removing pathogens (virus, bacteria, protozoa) beyond 300 uses (40 gal / 150 L). When tested in turbid waters, the lifespan was shortened somewhat, to about 190 uses (25 gal / 95 L).
Regardless of water conditions, once press time doubles (i.e. 30 seconds), the Purifier Cartridge should be replaced.Last updated:
What’s the shelf life of the replaceable Purifier Cartridge? I only travel every couple of months, how do I store it between uses?
Stored under proper conditions, an unopened Purifier Cartridges have a shelf life of 10 years. After a cartridge has been used, it lasts at least additional 3 years.
Keep the purifier in good condition between uses by storing it completely dry and in an airtight container (like a closed Ultralight Bottle). To dry the Purifier Cartridge, press the Purifier into a dry Outer [Re]Fill. Dump out the water, then remove the purifier and allow it to air dry upside down (24-48 hours, depending on air humidity).Last updated:
Your Outer [Re]Fill, Inner Press, and Loop Cap should be washed by hand with warm, soapy water. As needed, you may rinse the Purifier Cartridge with clean, purified water as needed. Do NOT wash the Purifier Cartridge with soap or other cleaning agents.Last updated:
