About

What We Need:

In order to see our ideas turned into a truly exceptional film we need several things. First is a good boat since what we have right now won't make the journey safely and the cost of repairs and refitting her will far exceed the cost of another used boat in better condition. After doing some extensive research on the subject we've found several options, the average of which is listed in the budget below. Next we need to pay for the stuff on the audio/video side of things, including camera equipment, lighting rigs, sound recorders and the like. We also need money to pay for the sound and music as well as video and image editing software. Finally we need funds for travel expenses, promotional materials and any miscellaneous items like SD cards and a postcard printer. You can find a basic budget below along with a chart laying it all out or a more detailed one can be found on our website. Keep in mind that all of these numbers are the best estimates we could assemble, while they aren't exact, we have spent time doing the research to make sure they're as close as possible to what the final numbers will be.

How will these funds be spent:

Below you'll find our basic budgets, a much more detailed one can be found on our website. Please keep in mind that these are all general prices and may vary to some degree. Any funds leftover will be rolled into the post production budget which will be posted on the website when it's been finalized. We made two budgets to give a high and low end perspective on how this money will be spent and what range we can work within to make this project a reality.

Minimum Budget: ($8,500)

Travel and Living Expenses:

  • Food $750   For a minimalist 4 month supply
  • Gas $500   For the boat only, no ground crew.
  • Slip Fees $1000   We'll try to moor for free whenever possible but this portion of the budget will be set aside in case of emergencies.

Boat Refitting and Maintenance:

  • Storage fees $2000   This is back rent for the boat we have.
  • Repairs $200   We'll be doing most of the repairs ourselves but we've allotted this for anything we can't safely do ourselves.  Some things are better left to trained professionals, especially when your life may later depend on it.
  • Parts $500   Again a minimal number for the bare essentials to get the boat seaworthy again.
  • Maintenance $1500   Approximately 10% of the boats value.

Film-making Equipment and Expenses:

  • Camera $1700   We've cut this out of the low end budget because we have he bare essentials to start filming now.  But if we exceed our minimum goal this is the first place the funding will go to ensure a higher quality final cut.
  • Sound $200   Almost everything has been cut from this part of the budget, leaving only enough for two digital sound recorders.
  • Lighting $100 Again we've cut this entirely out of the budget and will be relying on the basic lighting we can cobble together from what we already have.
  • Rigging $500 Without any professional grade cameras this was easy to cut out.  Again if we get enough extra funding to cover a nice camera, this will be the second thing to be reinstated in the budget.  It will be important for getting good shots with the heavier professional grade camera.
  • Editing Software $600   There was no way to cut this out of the budget.  We just won't be able to make the final product without it.
  • Misc $1250   This is the area for extras like a postcard printer, SD cards, taxes and fees etc. This also includes Indiegogos cut.

Ideal Budget:($35,000)

Travel and Living Expenses:

  • Food $2000 for a 4 month supply.
  • Gas $2000 Depending on current Prices.
  • Slip Fees $6000

Boat Refitting and Maintenance:

  • Used 30 ft boat. $3,500 This is an approximate number.
  •  Repairs $500 We'll be doing most of the repairs ourselves but we've allotted this for anything we can't safely do ourselves. Some things are better left to trained professionals, especially when your life may later depend on it.
  •  Parts $1000 This is for any additional parts we may need such as engine parts, sails, solar cells etc.
  • Boat Maintenance $2500 Approximately 10% of the boats value.
 Documentary marketing and promotion:
  • Facebook Advertising $1000
  •  Promotional Materials $3500

Film-making Equipment and Expenses:

  • Cameras $4600 This number includes one professional grade camera and several other waterproof sports cameras.
  •  Sound $1000 This is a minimum number, some of the extra funds beyond our minimum goal will be put here.
  •  Lighting $200 This number is relatively low because we won't be able to carry anything more elaborate than the most basic lighting solutions.
  • Rigging $600 This is another area where we're going with the basics but if we can exceed our basic budget we'll be putting more resources into it.
  • Editing Software $600 A subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud we should have everything we need to get through the basic production.
  •  Misc $6000 This is the area for extras like a postcard printer, SD cards, taxes and fees etc. This also includes Kickstarters cut

The Story:

Departing from Alexandria Maryland aboard the Argo, a 27 ft sailboat, we travel 1,200 miles down the ICW to Key West Florida, examining the local history and culture of the ports of call along the way. All culminating with our taking part in Florida’s annual celebration of Pirates in Paradise.

The 4 main pillars of this documentary are:

  • A compelling story about two brothers that become united by a common goal.
  • Together, they explore the environmental condition of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and the Wetlands along the Atlantic coast.
  • They'll bring the viewers along to discover new cities and examine the history and culture of the American East Coast.
  • Things end with a 'Bang!' as they take part in the Pirates in Paradise Festival with a pirate ship battle. The Argo will fire it’s cannon in a broadside attack on the High Tide, a 33 ft Sloop, before turning her guns on Fort Taylor in Key West Fl.

Film Style:

Docufiction or Cinéma Vérité Documentary.

Time Line:

  • Departure Date (Alexandria): September 1st
  • Arrival Date (Key West): December 1st
  • 42 total ports of call.
  • An average of 40 miles a day
  • 1400 total miles
  • 48 days scheduled for extra filming, maintenance and weather.
  • Arrival Date (Phoenix): Febuary 1st
  • Post Production Ends: August 1st

  • To Reach The Widest Possible Distribution

Project History:

It began in the year 1986 when David Taylor, having read a book about the first man to solo circumnavigate the globe, became interested in sailing and began to dream of his own adventure. Fast forward 28 years to the beginning of the plan in earnest. After recruiting his younger brother, Stephen Taylor, into the fold, the pair conceived of and began planning The Gemini Project. As the project matured, the pair refined the idea into three stages, thus breaking the whole plan down into more manageable pieces. The first stage of the plan involves acclamation to life on the water while the duo explore local history, culture and other interesting information about ports of call along the way. The film will end with a bang at Key West’s annual Pirates in Paradise celebration.

Special Limited Incentives:

  • Raider ($500) This is a special package of Voyage of the Argo signed memorabilia only available through the crowdfunding campaigns.  We do sell this collection of items on the website but you won't find the crew signatures on any of them.  Get them quick before they all run out.
  • Corsair ($750) This is a chance to experience life aboard the Argo firsthand.  Come with us on a 3 hour long tour of the Florida Keys after Pirates in Paradise and be in the behind the scenes/extra features of the documentary.
  • Swashbuckler ($1000) This package is your chance to get to know the crew by joining us for an evening of food, drink and merriment.  Come see us in Key West after pirates in paradise and take a brief spin with us aboard the Argo before settling down to a meal cooked by her crew.
  • Buccaneer ($2500) This is a very special perk that will go to only two lucky individuals.  Join us for the celebration of Pirates in Paradise and help crew our ship during our mock naval battle to kick off the celebration.  This lucky pair will be in the final cut of the documentary and will receive a special thank you in the credits.  This one would make an excellent gift for anyone taking a winter vacation in Key West.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest obstacle to overcome will be attaining funding and meeting our travel and filming schedule. Much of the editing and post production work will be done along the way as our footage will be sent to our editor and producer each night after filming is complete. This lets us streamline our process and cut the total post production timeline down significantly.

We also have a contingency timeline in place if we're forced to leave later than our current projected departure date. As well as a sliding budget for whatever amount of money we manage to raise.

Along the way any updates to the schedule can be tracked through our blog posts and mailing list, ensuring we can easily keep all of our sponsors and contributors in the know.

The thing to keep in mind here is that everything is fluid until we actually do it, but the website and Facebook posts will keep everyone in the loop.
