This summer, I will be growing a garden and making a documentary about the process. The film will be set in rural Arkansas (on my family ranch) and I will invite four urban friends to join me. We will harvest veggies and flowers, sell at the farmers market, cook harvest meals. We will document everything with five HDultra Flip Cams
The garden will be fully sustainable, chemical-free, and will include everything from summer squash to lemon verbena. I’m certainly no gardener (yet) and will be doing this with the the help of two all-star horticulturists. The plot will be guarded by ten chickens and one goat. What we can’t grow in the garden, we will source within a 100-mile radius. That means other small scale farms and gardens… not Safeway.
In early March, I will till the plot, build raised beds, and germinate seeds.
In May, I move permanently to the farm. For the months of May and June, I’ll be enlisting the help of visitors, family, and neighbors to plant the garden.
Near the end of June the “urbanites” arrive. We begin harvesting the garden, selling at the local farmers market, and production will begin in full swing!
Each “urban participant” (for lack of a better title) will be handed an HDultra Flip Cam on arrival. Thus participants will double as production team. We will all be equipped to capture each other, our community, and our environment. I hope this will create a self reflexive, interactive, truthful, and compelling narrative.
We will need funding for farm implements, energy, water, travel, gas, cameras, equipment rental, and seeds. For a full breakdown of the budget, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
