About this project
Village in a Box is a magical micro game that lets you build an amazing little village for your miserable subjects in just 15 minutes. (Read "Pledge Level Rewards" below for more details.)
As amazing as Village in a Box is, it is still just a 15 minute micro game. So what's more fun than one micro game? How about 8 micro games? So while this is the Village in a Box Kickstarter, we're offering 7 additional games at various pledge levels at bundled prices.
You, dear backer, can choose whether you wish to bundle just one game with Village in a Box, or get The Big Bundle of all 8 games for just $89. All the games are priced here below what their retail price will be after the Kickstarter, and on top of that shipping is included in the price!
All of our pledge levels include free shipping within the United States.
$1 - THANK YOU
Use this pledge level if you just want to keep up with this campaign and get private backer updates. We'll thank you by putting your name in a marquee scroll at the bottom of our web site for a week following the campaign.
$13 - THE EARLY BIRD
If you're one of the first 50 people to back us, you'll get $2 off your copy of Village in a Box!
$15 - VILLAGE IN A BOX
You've got 15 minutes to build the best village you can by making back room deals with the other wretched nobles around the table with you.
Village in a Box puts you in the role of a nobleman trying to build a place for your miserable subjects to live out their existence. You've got to build and trade your way to success, or risk losing your subjects to rival nobles.
The game takes place over a series of rounds that are played simultaneously. You build what you can, based upon the resources you have, and make deals with the other players to gain what you need to build the best village. And if the other players don't comply, you can always build a Thief to bring them down to your own treacherous level.
"A game that draws me in like that, is kind of unbelievable. I feel I could play it over and over again. I absolutely love this game." ~ Sean @ Gamer's Remorse
$30 - RAILROADS
Railroads have proven throughout recent history to be an industry unlike any other, with the power to shape countries, define economies, and create vast empires of resources and wealth! To be a successful railroad baron, you must possess the intelligence, cunning, and luck to make the right things happen at the right time. That's what this game is all about!
In this fast and fun card game, you build a hand of cards filled with Engines, Tracks, and Cargo.
When a player completes a set and creates a train, they get to score the top Station card. If any of the Cargo on their train matches the demand of that Station, the player scores even MORE points! By using some observation and deduction skills as the game progresses, you can skillfully choose when to score a Station and maximize your points!
Gameplay is very quick, but you have to manage your cards closely, because every turn, you must pass one of your cards to the player on your left! Be careful not to send them the card they need to score big!!
“A great game for family, friends, and aspiring railroad barons!” ~ Father Geek
$30 - STARSHIP BATTLES
Starship Battles is a quick and easy two to four player game in which players draft a set of ship systems, then use those systems to do battle against one another.
An enemy ship has come into range. Prepare to defend your ship. Choose which systems to bring online, then engage the enemy in all-out battle. This is a life or death struggle. Only one ship will survive. Will it be yours? Or will you succumb in the face of the enemy's tactics, preparedness, and cunning?
Will you go heavy on the shields, hoping to outlast your opponent? Or will you go with powerful weapons like the Plasma Vortex Cannon in an attempt to quickly smash through your opponent's defenses? Maybe you prefer making command decisions, changing the battle if you don't like the result. No matter your strategy, Starship Battles is a quick and easy game that everyone can enjoy.
$30 - NOUENI
With a simple rule set, but endless puzzle complexity, Noueni adds overlapping to tile placement making covering up your opponents' points more important than scoring your own.
Noueni - Japanese for "On top of" describes this abstract game.
You have a handful of cards and you try to attach them to cards that have already been played. It is simple to add a card next to another, but then both players continue to score. Overlapping cards is much more difficult, but then you cover up their scoring orbs. Only uncovered orbs score at the end of the game.
Make sure you end up on top.
"It's a work of art, and it's going to be different every time you play it, and that's awesome to me." ~ Sean @ Gamer's Remorse
$30 - OVERLORDS
The evil empire is divided. Amidst the chaos, several overlords emerge to claim rule over all by raising great armies of hellish creatures. They all yearn for power but only one will emerge victorious.
Overlords is a set collection, card drafting game for 2-4 players. Each turn, players recruit one card from their hand and then pass the rest of their hand to the player on their left. Every time a card is recruited, it goes into that player’s army pile. Only the top card is visible in each player’s army at any given time. There are two types of cards available in the game—Monster cards and Hired Hand cards. Each Monster card has a unique scoring mechanism. Players must recruit them wisely in order to maximize the number of points in their army. Hired Hand cards are placed separate from an army and, when activated, have special abilities that affect the game. The player who raises the most powerful army, wins!
"The set collection aspect of this game, will appeal to casual gamer. I love the artwork, and the game." ~ Jeff @ All Us Geeks
$30 - DUNGEONEERING DOLLS
Dungeoneering Dolls is a Build-A-Bear workshop in a fantasy setting where players collect golems of different job classes for prestige.
While all adventurers sought glory and fame, most have gotten it and just retired. Evil doesn’t stop, just the heroes. So a famed magician, Percival Thistlewood, designed two feet tall wooden golems who, upon receiving garments, would spring to a life of adventure. Collectors from all over the kingdom crave these Dungeoneering Dolls for their status and the riches obtained through quests.
This is a quick game of assembling a great collection of cards while stealing cards from others. Eventually, once the first Quest Card is revealed, end game scoring begins and this is where your collection can truly shine. Send your dolls off on quests for even more points.
"I love this game. The artwork is incredible. I rate it an 8 out of 10." ~ Eric @ Gamer's Remorse
$30 - TRADE FLEET
Trade Fleet is a casual card game in which players redeem goods at ports for gold all the while playing cards against other players to stop them from earning gold.
The golden age of sail was funded by the mighty trade fleets of the World’s nations. In this card game you will control a fleet of ships, trying to amass as much gold as possible.
Collect goods and when you have enough trade them in at a port. Maybe you want to waylay other captains with dock fees or get them lost? Remember, the pirates weren't the richest men on the seas, the traders were.
Players have several different play options each turn including playing a card, playing a port or redeeming goods. By redeeming goods at a port players earn gold which is required to win the game.
“It’s fun, it’s fast, and it is a solid game to have at the table. I definitely recommend grabbing this game for your collection.” ~ All Us Geeks Podcast
$30 MONSTER CITY PLANNERS
Monster City Planners is a drafting game about managing your victory conditions while coordinating the constructions and miscreation of a city inhabited by ten-story tall monsters.
As the sun pierces the morning fog, the harbor fills with the low rumbling roar of monster contractors checking in for another day of miscreation. Your job as an urban planner is to strike a balance between serving diverse public interests, and managing ten-story tall monsters who are committed to leaving their mark on Monster City.
Monster City Planners is a deeply strategic game with drafting, dual use cards, and hidden goal selection. Players start each round by choosing their hand of cards through a draft. Each card has two uses: 1) a monster action that changes the city plan, and 2) a unique scoring criteria for earning points. But you can only use each card for one of its two purposes. After the draft, players take turns constructing and demolishing buildings until all players yield. They then score points based on the unused cards that remain in their hands, and how well those cards' scoring criteria are reflected in the final city plan.
"Monster City Planners is a solid game. I absolutely love this game." ~ Jeff @ All Us Geeks

$5 THE NANO BUNDLE ADD-ON
Great news! We are now able to offer The Nano Bundle as a $5 add-on. Previously, this 18-card expansion was only provided to backers of The Big Bundle. However, many of you asked us to make it an add-on and now it's available to everyone! Just add $5 to your pledge and it's yours. Here's a sampling of the cards below:
$5 THE NOUENI DOLLS BUNDLE ADD-ON
This bundle includes kickstarter-exclusive cards for Noueni and Dungeoneering Dolls! For Noueni, 18 new cards are added and serve as a 5th player expansion. So now you and up to 4 of your friends can all play together! In addition, this bundle includes 6 summons cards for Dungeoneering Dolls. These are single-use cards that are given out randomly at the beginning of the game and may be spent to recover a class doll from the top of the discard. Here is a sampling of some of the cards in this expansion:
$5 THE TRADE BATTLES BUNDLE ADD-ON
This bundle includes kickstarter-exclusive cards for Trade Fleet and Starship Battles. As with previous bundles, there will be 18 cards total. 3 of them will be for Trade Fleet and 15 of them will be for Starship Battles. For Starship Battles, some of the cards included will be roles. The designers will talk more about these cards in the comments section.
We really appreciate our backers from all over the world. Unfortunately, shipping physical goods outside the United States is very expensive. We've created chart so you know how much extra you need to add to your pledge for shipping to your location. We highly recommend going in on one of our bundles with other backers in your area to spread out the shipping costs.
We've planned many great stretch goals for this campaign. We'll reveal each as the previous goal is reached. Our community is always asking for new features on The Game Crafter, and many also ask us to incorporate them into a crowd funding campaign. So some of the stretch goals will be related to The Game Crafter and some will be related to Village in a Box.
$2,500 : DOUBLE SIDED TILES - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal we will make all our tile variants at The Game Crafter double-sided, right now they are all single-sided. That probably isn't going to surprise anybody, as it's something we've been trying to work out since we launched tiles last year. But the thing that is specific to this crowd funding effort is that we will make the double-sided tiles a free upgrade! All tiles going forward will be the same price as they are now, only double-sided! This is the most requested feature we get at The Game Crafter so it will make a lot of people very happy.
$5,000 : WATER IN A BOX - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal we'll add 18 additional cards to every copy of Village in a Box. These cards are a special Kickstarter exclusive expansion that add water features to your villages.
$6000 : LARGE SQUARE CHITS - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal The Game Crafter will release a new 1.25" Large Square Chit for its print on demand game publishing service. 77 chits will come on each sheet and they will consist of 60pt chipboard covered with high gloss paper on both sides. Chits have been a popular request since we launched in 2009 so we are excited to finally offer them to game designers! :)
$7000 : LARGE HEX CHITS - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal The Game Crafter will release a new 1.25" Large Hex Chit for its print on demand game publishing service. 77 hex chits will come on each sheet and they will consist of 60pt chipboard covered with high gloss paper on both sides.
200+ COPIES: GAMES IN A BOX - FUNDED!
Village in a Box is approaching 200 copies. That's a sort of magic number where it makes sense to upgrade the box to a thicker card stock. So after Village in a Box crosses this threshold, we will upgrade everyone's copies to a thicker box stock!
Not only will we do this for Village in a Box, but for each game that makes it to 200 copies, we'll upgrade the box stock. So this is a stretch goal that can keep on giving through-out the remainder of the campaign!

- Noueni - FUNDED!

- Dungeoneering Dolls - FUNDED!

$10,000: PEOPLE IN A BOX - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal we'll add an extra 18 cards to Village in a Box in the form of an exclusive Kickstarter expansion called People in a Box. This expansion will give you even more buildings to add to your villages, but more importantly it will give you role cards. These roles will allow each player to have a special advantage in the game, which will hopefully lead them to victory!
$15,000: THE NANO BUNDLE - FUNDED!
Trade Fleet, Starship Battles, Railroads, Monster City Planners, Dungeoneering Dolls, and Overlords are each getting some extra special Kickstarter-exclusive cards added to their decks with this stretch goal. 18 cards in all will be added to The Big Bundle. You must pledge The Big Bundle to receive this stretch goal. Here's a sampling of some of the cards in the expansion:

$25,000 - THE TRADE BATTLES BUNDLE - FUNDED!
This stretch goal includes kickstarter-exclusive cards for Trade Fleet and Starship Battles. As with previous bundles, there will be 18 cards total. 3 of them will be for Trade Fleet and 15 of them will be for Starship Battles. For Starship Battles, some of the cards included will be roles. You must pledge The Big Bundle to receive this stretch goal, but we will also likely release this as an add-on for those of you who are pledging one or both of these games.
$30,000: PLAYER IN A BOX - FUNDED!
When we hit this stretch goal we'll add an extra 18 cards to Village in a Box in the form of an exclusive Kickstarter expansion called Player in a Box. This expansion will allow up to 5 people to play Village in a Box! We're really excited about this expansion and we think the $30,000 stretch goal is very attainable at this point. Let's fund this stretch goal and get more people in the game! :)
You might be wondering why, if all these games will be available via print on demand through The Game Crafter, would we need Kickstarter. That's a good question, and there are two primary reasons:
First, getting a foothold in the game industry is a tough endeavor for fledgling game designers. Publishers and gamers alike prefer names they know. So we picked some games we like, vetted them for you, and are presenting them in this format as a group of known good games that we stand behind. Just like Kickstarter, The Game Crafter is in the business of making people's dreams come true, so we've banded together with these 8 game designers to put together a dream package. It is only through the coalition of all of us (The Game Crafter, Kickstarter, the designers, and most importantly you: our backers) that can we make this happen.
Second, even in print on demand, there are economies of scale. We couldn't afford to manufacture the games, pay royalties and shipping, and still get the games to you at an inexpensive price without large numbers of orders all at once. Kickstarter affords us this opportunity, by allowing us to do a group buy.
Risks and challenges
As a manufacturer of thousands of board games we are confident we can not only deliver quality, but we can do it on time. The designs for these games are already proofed and ready for print. We just need your help to do a large enough run to get the pricing down. We are firmly committed to quality, so if there is any damage to your order during shipping, we will just ask for a photograph of the damage or defect and then ship you out a new copy.
The only risk of delay could come down to some of the stretch goals. They are planned, and designed, but some factors are out of our control. We're pretty sure we've got it all nailed down, but since 100% of them aren't being manufactured in-house, we cannot guarantee it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
