About this project
The Captain Is Dead is a frantic co-op board game that lets you save your crew from utter annihilation. Each of the up to 7 players gets a unique role; however, there are no heroes in this game. You must work together to repair critical systems and fend off a hostile alien threat or you will all perish. (Read "The Games" below for more info.)
The Captain Is Dead is an amazing game, but why have only one game when you could have three great games for one low price? So while this is The Captain Is Dead Kickstarter Campaign, we're bundling it with two additional games! You, dear backer, can choose whether you want to get just The Captain, pick two games, or get all three games for just $99. That means you're basically getting the third game for free!
We have three amazing games in this bundle, each good enough to stand on their own campaign, but then you wouldn't get the amazing bundle price!
Imagine that you are one of the crew in your favorite science fiction TV show. Now imagine that in the last 10 minutes of the show things have gone so badly that the captain is dead, and you and a member of your crew have to pull together and save the day yourselves!
The Captain Is Dead is a co-op game for 2 to 7 players. All you have to do is get the ship's engines (aka "Jump Core") back online and you win; but because there is a hostile alien ship trying to destroy you, that is easier said than done.
You have an impressive star ship full of useful systems that will help you fend off the aliens, and get the Jump Core back online.
Each system gives you an advantage while it remains online. The assault from the hostile alien ship tends to keep knocking those systems offline however. So you need to balance your time between keeping the ships systems online, fending off the alien threat, and completing your objective.
Each member of your crew has special abilities and skills. You need to work as a group to maximize the potential of each role. If someone tries to be a hero, you'll all die.
We've hired a very talented artist from Italy named Gaetano Leonardi to illustrate The Captain Is Dead. The game is chock full of his impressionist propaganda style, such as this illustration of the Admiral.
The reviews are in, and The Captain Is Dead is a winner:
"The artwork is fantastic. I'd hang that on my wall as a poster." ~ The Dice Tower
"I'd rather play The Captain than Pandemic." ~ Chevee Dodd, Designer of Pull! and Scallywags
"Best co-op game ever!" ~ To The Table
"This is a great co-op game! I loved it each time I played it." ~ All Us Geeks Podcast
"The best co-op game I have ever played! I'm not kidding. It is absolutely amazing." ~ Jason Glover, Designer of Plague, Zogar's Gaze, Tasnia, and Dig Down Dwarf
Scarborough Fair is a resource selling game where players will buy and sell four resources: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. They will set the prices that they sell each resource at, place Merchants in tents and buy Victory Points to give them the lead. But the customer is a shrewd shopper so don’t raise your prices too high or you’ll be left holding resources that you can’t sell. Pick the prime locations, corner a market or undercut your opponents to win.
Scarborough Fair is not a complicated game to learn and is fairly quick to play, but it has enough strategy to keep more seasoned gamers interested. It's a great game for families and hard core gamers alike.
You are a merchant at Scarborough Fair, selling passers-by all the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme they can get their hands on.
You set up shop at the various tents along the paths of the fair, and set your prices. Shoppers are savvy though, and will not pay a high price if there is a lower price near-by.
"This a must-have for your game library." ~ To The Table Reviews
"Scarborough Fair is one of my favorite games. You'd do well to make it one of yours as well." ~ The Game Crafter Staff Pick
It’s August 1981 in the midst of the Air Traffic Controller Strike. President Reagan has just ordered all controllers back to work. You, determined to keep your job, have returned – only to find the situation is even more turbulent then before: more planes, less controllers, and high competition.
In this turbulent game you control 7 planes, of which 5 must reach your landing strip to win! You have three actions each turn with which you may:
- Take-Off - move one airplane onto the Air Currents
- Move across one Air Current
- Rotate - turn one air tile right or left one turn
- Swap - swap two tiles
Seems simple right? Not exactly. Rotating and Swapping can only be done if your planes are touching the tiles. The more planes you have on the board, the more power you have. Meanwhile your opponents will be trying to get their planes in and pushing or crashing (yes you can collide into other planes) to prevent you from getting there first! You'll be swapping, pushing, rotating, crashing, landing, taking-off, and triple pushing in this game of TURBULENCE.
"Fantastic, I would highly recommend this game." ~ Gamers Remorse
"I highly recommend this game to anyone. It's light-weight, but tons of fun." ~ The Game Crafter Staff Pick

We are pleased to announce that we have added EU FRIENDLY shipping options for all of our pledge levels. These pledge levels include shipping and customs charges to backers that are in Western or Central EU.
We really appreciate our backers from all over the world. Unfortunately, shipping physical goods outside the United States is very expensive. Our options are either to charge a lot for shipping outside the United States, or not offer the games to folks outside the US. We've chosen to support shipments outside the United States.
Our EU Friendly pledges include shipping and customs fees in the price. However, if you are in other countries then please be aware that you may be responsible to pay import taxes on your international order.
FUNDED! - $5,000 - 7 Additional Characters for The Captain Is Dead
We'll add seven new characters to the existing seven great characters that are already part of the base game, for a total of 14!
FUNDED! - $10,000 -Turbulence Enhancements Expansion
This expansion is a new deck of special modifiers for Turbulence. This deck will be up to 18 cards and will come with every copy of Turbulence. The cards are special modifiers chosen at the beginning of the game. They change some basic rules about the game. These modifiers ensure that no two games of Turbulence will ever be the same.
But here's the thing, you get to help us pick which cards to include in the deck. Submit your ideas to this forum on BGG. We'll pick the best ones and include them in the deck.
FUNDED! - $20,000 - Visual Pawns For The Captain Is Dead
While the pawns included in the game currently are very nice, there's nothing like having your actual character represented directly in the game. This stretch goal will replace all 14 character pawns, and all 12 alien pawns with visual pawns representing each. Have a look at the photo below to see what they look like. Each pawn is still color coded, but has the image of the character printed on each side.
As a special bonus to our friends and fans in The Game Crafter Community, if this stretch goal is funded, these pawns and the stickers that go on them will be made available for anyone designing a game at The Game Crafter.
FUNDED! - $30,000 - Custom Wooden Meeples For Scarborough Fair
We will replace the 60 wooden cubes in Scarborough Fair with 60 custom wooden resource meeples that more closely represent the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme theme of Scarborough Fair.
As a special bonus to our friends and fans in The Game Crafter Community, when this stretch goal is funded, we will release these meeples for use in our parts shop. That means people can pimp out their own game designs, or off the shelf games they've purchased elsewhere with our new custom wooden meeples!
FUNDED! - $40,000 - Tools Expansion
This stretch goal adds an entirely new concept to The Captain Is Dead. These are tools that get added to the cargo pod. Characters can go there and pick them up, and that gives them a 2-use special ability. Five cards are added in this expansion and they are: Torch, Pistol, Rifle, Remote, and Scanner.
FUNDED! - $50,000 - Four Character Expansion
In this stretch goal we will add four visual pawns and four new character cards. The characters are the Janitor, the Crewman, the Scholar, and the Counselor.
FUNDED! - $57,500 - Mission Expansion
You asked for more mission content, and here is your chance to get it! These 7 cards add 2 new anomalies, 4 new standard alerts, and 1 new battle plan. You can swap these in place of some existing cards to get more variety in your game. These cards are marked so you can easily pull them out to play the base game.
FUNDED! - $65,000 - Mission Expansion #2
This stretch goal adds 1 new battle plan, and 6 new alerts. They will be marked so you can choose to shuffle them into the decks, or replace cards from the normal deck with some of these cards for more varied play.
FUNDED! - $72,500 - Game Box Upgrade
When this stretch goal funds, the game box for The Captain Is Dead will be upgraded to a better box with even more of Gaetano’s incredible artwork.
You can add these items on to any pledge level.
Art Prints - $20
Add $20 to any pledge level to get a set of 18 high quality prints measuring 3.5 x 5.5 inches ( 89 x 140 mm ), containing illustrations by Gaetano Leonardi for The Captain Is Dead. If these are added to a pledge containing games, then no additional shipping cost is necessary to be added.
You might be wondering why, if these games will be available via print on demand through The Game Crafter, would we need Kickstarter. That's a good question, and there are two primary reasons:
First, getting a foothold in the game industry is a tough endeavor for fledgling game designers. Publishers and gamers alike prefer names they know. So we picked some games we like, vetted them for you, and are presenting them in this format as a group of known good games that we stand behind. Just like Kickstarter, The Game Crafter is in the business of making people's dreams come true, so we've banded together with these 3 game designers to put together a dream package. It is only through the coalition of all of us (The Game Crafter, Kickstarter, the designers, and most importantly you: our backers) that can we make this happen.
Second, even in print on demand, there are economies of scale. We couldn't afford to manufacture the games, pay royalties and shipping, and still get the games to you at an inexpensive price without large numbers of orders all at once. Kickstarter affords us this opportunity, by allowing us to do a group buy.
Risks and challenges
As a manufacturer of thousands of board games we are confident we can not only deliver quality, but we can do it on time. The designs for these games are already proofed and ready for print. We just need your help to do a large enough run to get the pricing down. We are firmly committed to quality, so if there is any damage to your order during shipping, we will just ask for a photograph of the damage or defect and then ship you out a new copy.
The only risk of delay could come down to some of the stretch goals. They are planned, and designed, but some factors are out of our control. We're pretty sure we've got it all nailed down, but since we are not manufacturing all of them, we cannot guarantee it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
First, the stretch goals that we're doing for The Captain Is Dead are the only stretch goals we would have done had this not been a bundle. There wouldn't have been more stretch goals. Therefore nobody will be missing out on anything because of a couple extra stretch goals for the other games.
Second, the reason we do this isn't just to sell games. We are a very community driven company. Our goal is to promote new game designers and show off the talents of folks who may never otherwise be seen. So while it looks like the focal point of this campaign is The Captain Is Dead, in reality for us the focal point is promoting the community through the bundle.
The Captain Is Dead is our anchor game for the bundle, hence why it's name is on the KS and why it is getting the lion's share of the stretch goals. However, what is important to us is to elevate fledgling designers. As a small company we don't have the resources to run individual campaigns for each game, so instead we do these bundles. That lack of resources might cause us to lose a few backers who feel that we're diluting the campaign by including stretch goals for 3 games. But in the end, we've brought 2 additional talented designers out of the shadows. To us, that's worth the risk.
While we have done it, that was not a goal for this project so it hasn't been heavily tested. You can play solo as a single character, but we think it is more fun to take on the role of two or more characters when playing solo.
Yes there is. You can find it here: http://www.reddit.com/r/thecaptainisdead/
