Lockdown is the third episode in the ongoing saga that started 2 years ago with The Captain is Dead. This time our intrepid crew find themselves prisoners on their own ship. Hostile aliens have taken control. The crew must work together and remain hidden while attempting to regain control of the ship.
Lockdown (aka Episode 3) is an expansion of The Captain is Dead, and therefore you must have the original game (aka Episode 1) to play it. Just like Episode 1 and 2, Episode 3 is a co-op game for 1 to 7 players.
This episode replaces everything except the main game board. As such there are a lot of new components.
Because we allowed for multiple pawn types in our first kickstarter, we have no choice, but to provide a complete set of pawns in this expansion. The pawns in this expansion are laser cut. Laser cut items will have soot around the edges, which can easily be wiped off with a damp paper towel; and will have a campfire smell for about a week after you open them.
The reviews are in and The Captain is Dead, Episode 3 - Lockdown is a hit!
Though the mission is very different than Episode 1 (the original game), the mechanics are much the same as Episode 1. If you are unfamiliar with The Captain is Dead we encourage you to watch its how to play video first.
In episode 3, all the characters start in the infirmary. And hostile aliens control the ship. They've locked all of the systems. Your job is to sneak around the ship, unlocking systems, and eventually regain control of the ship.
There are 4 additional types of aliens onboard. Each with their own special abilities. If they catch you sneaking about, you'll trigger alarms. Alarms are one of the ways you can lose the game. After you've triggered enough alarms, they'll set their weapons to kill, and instead of trying to keep you prisoner, they'll just start executing all the characters on board.
All of the systems have been locked down with the alien's own language. You can either hack the systems (which triggers more alarms), or you can learn the alien language and unlock them. Either way no systems are available to you until you figure that out.
In addition, several of the existing systems have been replaced with new ones that have different costs and abilities. For example the torpedo tube has been replaced with a grenade locker.
In Episode 3 your goal is to remain concealed. Nearly everything you do from hacking systems to killing aliens will trigger alarms. If you trigger enough alarms the aliens will set their weapons to kill and then every alarm you trigger from that point forward will begin killing your fellow crew members. If everyone is dead, you lose. But don't worry, for those of you who are faint of heart, you may optionally get up to 2 chances to come back from the dead.
It's not all doom and gloom however. There are a bunch of new tools and ship upgrades to help you on your way. And if that wasn't enough there are 3 new characters joining the crew too. Plus all the original characters now have new abilities suited to this mission.
Ultimately, if you want to win, you'll need to regain control of the ship. You can do that by learning the alien language and using some engineering. However, you can also advance ship control by just getting rid of the aliens on board the ship temporarily.
