The Game is a new comic book series from Charlie Stickney and Conor Hughes, the creators of the Kickstarter hit (and soon to be Scout Comic sensation) White Ash. This time around we’re joined by the amazing Tríona Farrell (West Coast Avengers, Black Panther, Crowded) on colors as we do our spin on science fiction —think Quantum Leap, if Sam happened to jump into the body of The Highlander, and then got dragged into a sexy noir thriller. (Note: for those born after 1990, sub Joss Whedon's Dollhouse for Quantum Leap and keep on reading).
It's an ambitious combo, but around here it's go big or go home if you want to have a chance of winning...
This campaign is to raise funds to print the 32 page The Game: #1 and hopefully hit a couple of Stretch Goals along the way. We've been fortunate enough in the past to reach several in our other campaigns. Hopefully we can do that together again and run up your winnings on The Game.
So just what is The Game?
That's the question about to rock Eli Tanner. It's also a question that's hard to answer without giving too much away. And if you've read White Ash, you know half the fun of the series is finding out the next big reveal. So in a "Break Kickstarter" kinda way, rather than tease anymore we're just going to let you dive right in and read the first 10 pages of the book. Right now.
Yep, The Game roars out of the gates with a bang (sorry, too soon?). And we're just getting started as Eli's day is about to get a lot more complicated. For instance, he still hasn't met Iris...
But they're coming. So is the Sci-Fi. (There's an epic game being played out over centuries... ) But you'll have to back our campaign to find out exactly where The Game goes next.
Aaaaand, to make things more fun, as part of #BREAK KICKSTARTER month, we're going to PLAY A GAME with you. (Details are somewhere on this page...).
But for now, as Paul would say, "let's get the lead out" and get on to the...
To start with, there's THE BOOK.
One of the things we love about Kickstarter is there's no publisher dictating that to save money we need to squeeze our story into 20 pages. (Yes, Marvel, I'm looking at you). The Game #1 clocks in at 32 pages of story, no adds or filler.
And that kind of content deserves a premium paper weight.
Like with White Ash, we print The Game on a heavy 85 lb glossy paper stock with a 105 lb glossy cover. When you pick up one of our books, you'll feel the difference. A heavier stock also makes the comic less likely to be damaged in transit.
AKA Variant Covers. And this campaign we are lucky enough to be able to offer two.
The first is our IRIS COVER VARIANT from Image/ Dynamite/ Boom Studios superstar, Jenn St-Onge. This will be a exclusive print run of only 250 copies. This variant will not be sold in stores. They only place you can get it, is right here on Kickstarter. (If we don't completely sell out, we may bring a copy or two to conventions. But I wouldn't count on it).
And in honor of our second trip to SDCC, Conor whipped up an exclusive CON-ONLY 16 PAGE ASHCAN of The Game to sell at our booth and let people know about the Kickstarter. Since we know not everyone can make it to San Diego, and we didn't want to leave our loyal backers out in the cold, we'll be "buying up" some of the copies at the Con so we can offer them directly to you. This is an incredibly limited print run. We only made 100 total copies of the SDCC variant and each one will be signed by Conor and Charlie.
If you're a collector, you're not going to want to miss out on this.
And to commemorate The Game's launch on Kickstarter, we're giving every physical backer a 6x11 print of Conor's gorgeous "Welcome to The Game" illustration. (All backers will receive a digital copy).
New to what we do? Along with The Game, you can snag a copy of White Ash:Vol 1 a 200 page hardcover, in a wraparound dust jacket by Conor Hughes and Fin Cramb, that collects all four of our over-sized issues and includes an ALL-NEW BACK UP STORY that reveals a bit of White Ash's hidden history. You can select this in one of our bundled tiers or grab a copy as an add-on post-campaign.
And for those looking for the ultimate "The Game" collectable, get a pair of custom carved, The Game branded wooden dice and draw-string dice bag.
Want a piece of The Game or White Ash original art?
Conor Hughes will sketch you a 6x9 drawing of a character from The Game or White Ash. Choose from The Game's Eli, Kimberly, Iris or any of White Ash's extensive cast of characters.
Really play The Game and have your likeness drawn into the book.
Under Conor's careful eye, a background character will be designed to look like you.
(NOTE: These are probably not speaking roles, just cameos. But every now and then, if we find the right person, we'll make you an actual character in the comic. So be forewarned...)
STRECH GOAL #1, How To Assemble The Game (UNLOCKED).
Every backer will receive a behind the scenes PDF. This PDF will included concept sketches, process breakdowns showing the pages from thumbnails to finished colors, the script and more.
STRETCH GOAL #2 - An Eye on Iris.
If we can reach $14,000 we'll be giving a textured 6x9 print of Jen St-Onge's amazing variant cover to all of our backers.
$17,00 (to be revealed when the preceding goal is unlocked)
$20,000 (to be revealed when the preceding goal is unlocked)
We know what it's like to open up a package and find a mangled Kickstarter comic inside. We pack our books with care that we used in making the book and the love that we have for our backers.
Each comic is bagged, boarded front and back and sent in stay-flat packaging. Made in White Ash means everything from the content, to the mailer we use, meets our standards of quality.
Add-Ons will be handled post campaign by our friends at Backerkit. If you want an extra copy of the comic/ want to add a White Ash hardcover or some of our swag from previous campaigns (Trading cards, post cards, prints, etc.) you will be able to select add those items for purchase after you confirm your shipping information. If you have a specific question about an add-on, please don't hesitate to directly message us.
And who's us?
Meet the team.
Charlie Stickney is a writer/producer residing in Los Angeles who's been fortunate enough to work for companies including: Sony Pictures, Revolution Studios, Universal Pictures, Hulu and Scholastic Productions. He's developed and created animated shows like Cosmic Quantum Ray and Horrible Histories. While in college, Charlie interned in the editorial offices at Marvel. And were it not for a job offer in LA, the plan after graduation was to move to New York to write comic books. About two years ago Charlie brought White Ash to Kickstarter finally fulfilling that dream and hasn't looked back. #comicsarethebest

She has worked for many companies such as MARVEL, IMAGE, DARKHORSE, DYNAMITE and VAULT as a colourist. Notable works of her include WEST COAST AVENGERS, CROWDED and TERMINATOR. She loves her cat and nerding out over everything.
You made it to the bottom of the page! Congratulation, you've passed the first challenge. Hopefully it was easy, but it's going to get a little tricker from here on out.
We need you to tweet out this campaign. And when you do, tag either @CharlesStickney or @conorhughes on twitter.
If you do that, we will reply to your tweet with a clue. Throughout the campaign, we will have more instructions on how to play our game. Collect all the clues, solve the puzzle, and you will have an exclusive GAME WINNER reward added to your package when it arrives. (If you're a digital only backer of the campaign, we'll have a digital version for you).
So good luck and may the best players win. (Yes, everyone who solves the puzzle gets a reward, we're not monsters... at least Tríona isn't).
Risks and challenges
This is our SIXTH Kickstarter. At this point we've worked out most of the kinks. We've hit our scheduled delivered date on our last FOUR Kickstarters (The White Ash hardcover is shipping now).
If you look at our backer numbers and comments, you'll see a happy and growing bunch. While there are plenty of things we're not good at (just ask our wives) when it comes to comics on Kickstarter we know what it takes. To that end, we're just wrapping up the last couple of pages of art now. By the time the campaign is over, we'll be ready to send out the PDF’s to our backers and the book off to the printer.
And sure, things can ALWAYS go wrong. But if they do, and there are any problems or delays, we'll be in touch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
