About this project

Do you feel overwhelmed by work and need to find your balance?

Good news - we have the perfect solution:

In front of you is the Focus Journal – a tool designed to make your work more efficient, productive and feel better. It’s a task journal created on the premise that planning something shouldn't take longer than actually doing it. It helps you make the most out of your work hours while balancing productivity and well-being. It is not meant to be used in place of your digital calendars or other digital tools, but instead as a complement to them.

Increasing Productivity

The Focus Journal helps you define daily and long term goals by dividing them into manageable tasks. This gives structure to your day and a good overview of the work that needs to be done. Tasks can be prioritized, timed and tracked for progress. Having a clear structure means being more organized and efficient.

To keep your brain sharp and focused the Focus Journal has brain activities that were approved by DynamicBrain.

Minimal Design

The Focus Journal is a decluttered daily journal and was designed according to the premise of minimalism. This means the layout is very clean and only has graphic elements that are really needed. It also doesn’t impose rigid systems, methods or frames of thought. Its structure allows you to plan and execute according to your own way of thinking.

The pages are not dated which allows you to use the journal whenever. There is also a lot of free space for notes and sketches.

Balancing Well-being and Work

Work should feel good and gratifying. This is why fun and well-being tasks are included in the Focus Journal. Their purpose is to help you plan for fun breaks or healthy activities while working. The summary at the end of each day helps you reflect and evaluate the day’s work.

Testimonials

"I like how it doesn't force you to plan more than you need to." – Nadya Pecherskaya, Nutritionist and Founder of EHF Vancouver

"I'd really recommend it to people in the creative fields because you have your tasks on one side but on the other side you have room for doodling your ideas and it gives you the freedom to play, love that!" – Steven Sal Debus, Product Designer

"It's a great integration of work, well-being, and fun, all in one journal." –Faris Khalifeh, Quiet Leadership Coach

How to use it

The design elements and layout of the journal are a result of researching and testing. They act as guides for your thought process while giving you the freedom to use the planner in a way that fits your way of thinking and planning.

Checkpoints - Use these pages to set and keep track of your monthly goals or projects.

Layout - The daily journal pages consist of two pages side by side with goals and tasks on the left and a dotted notes page on the right for all your ideas and sketches.

Dates - The journal is undated. A blank line lets you write down the date and place any way you want.

Goals/Priorities - Write down daily goals or priorities to keep your focus on the bigger picture.

Tasks - Break down your goals/priorities into tasks to create a clear path to achieve or work on them.

Task line - Prioritize tasks and set deadlines by using the underscore in front of the split circle.

Split circle - This is a visual clue to track your progress. If the task is not finished or has to be continued at a later time, fill out one half. When it is completed, fill out the whole circle.

Well-being and Fun tasks - A set of tasks you set yourself to balance work. If you need inspiration, check the back of the journal.

Notes - Use the dotted notes pages however you see fit. Write down phone numbers, sketch airplanes, calculate revenue or even make it your diary. In addition to the notes section on the daily pages, we will be including extra notes pages at the end of the journal.

Summary - Reflect on your day and fill out the circles. With time, you’ll be able to see trends and better understand how to balance productivity and well-being.

Brain exercises - Designed to keep your brain sharp and give you a break from the daily routine.

Design Features

When we were designing the journal we wanted it to be portable, light, durable and functional. Here are the design features of the Focus Journal. (Some of them are not implemented in the prototype shown on this page. It's because it was absurdly expensive to have them for the run of ten copies we've made to test the journal.)

Elastic - to prevent the journal from opening in your bag.

Back Pocket - to keep stuff you need at hand.

Soft Covers - to make the journal light and portable.

Rounded Edges - to prevent the edges from folding.

Time Span Label on the spine - to keep track of your past work.

Two Colours - to match your style.

Lay Flat Binding - The prototypes seen in these pictures have a book binding. However, the Focus Journal will have a lay flat binding so you can more easily write in it!

The Story

The Focus Journal is a product created by L’Atelier Coworking Vancouver where Sabrina and Matej work with multiple freelancers, contract workers and solopreneurs. After observing, researching and experiencing the new realities of work life, they discovered a need for a journal that increases productivity while balancing well-being and fun at the same time.

This product wouldn't be possible without the support from the coworking community at L'Atelier. Members were involved in the design process and their feedback was crucial in making the journal functional and user friendly.

Helping out the Neighbourhood

Canada is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and British Columbia is one of the wealthiest Canadian provinces. Surprisingly, every fifth child in BC lives in poverty. At L’Atelier we see this problem every day walking down E Hastings street with a large population of homeless people. This is why we’ve partnered with Covenant House Vancouver - an organization that helps struggling youth. As one of the reward tiers, we’ll be donating a free journal to every youth that is in their “Rights of Passage” program.

Risks and challenges

We have experience leading crowdfunding campaigns and following through to the last reward delivery. For the Focus Journal, we took extra care with choosing the best possible partners to bring this journal to life and into your hands. We’ve decided to go with a well reputed printing shop that will be able to supply high quality materials.

The challenge is to get the orders to the printing shop before the Christmas madness hits production capacities and clutters shipping routes. As soon as we reach our goal, we will order the journals to be printed to get them shipped as soon as possible. The lead time for the print job is 5 to 7 weeks.

A higher number of pledges than anticipated would also be a challenge. It will demand a re-shift of the production schedule and cause a delay in delivering rewards. This means reaching our goal sooner will actually speed things up.
