About this project
Come with us to photograph every Sizzler in America!
(Note: If you are on mobile internet you can view the video on YouTube here.)
Why back us now
Why back us now, with $9,940 and only 42 hours to go? Because if you do like the Sizzler project, and want to be involved - we need to know. Regardless of whether we get funded here, we need to find our people!
You know Sizzler. The family steakhouse. If there isn't one in your town, there probably used to be.
Photographing Sizzlers may sound funny, but this is a serious art project. Just as there's beauty in every person, there's beauty in every Sizzler. We make the photographs blurry to help bring this out and make beautiful art that you can own by backing this project.
Now, on to the questions:
Why Sizzler? Sizzler is Americana. With 206 locations, it's epic, yet manageable. It's an opportunity to travel the suburbs (and some urbs) of America. Sizzler is not just the sizzle, it has the steak too!
What are we actually photographing? The buildings. Sizzlers occupy similar yet amazingly varied structures in parking lots and mall parking lots across this great country.
What is the end result of this project? We will make a self-published artist book on Blurb (you can preview a work-in-progress version here.) We'll also make posters and prints. Hopefully, a gallery show will follow. That's the goal!
What will we use the money for? $12,000 will cover the rest of our travel to complete the project. We have already driven over 8,200 miles, but have over 7,500 miles yet to do, plus another 13,000 miles in the air AND not to mention over 1-1/2 miles on foot to get to the Sizzler on Highland near our apartment in L.A. We've photographed 34 Sizzlers so far, mostly in the mid-west and East coast. When we canvass the Sizzler-dense western states (and Puerto Rico and Hawaii) we will pick up an additional 172 and meet our goal of photographing EVERY Sizzler.
Here's what still needs to be done:
But wait -- we shoot on film, right? What about those costs? Yes, we do shoot on film - medium format to boot - because it's luscious and wonderful. We have invested thousands in travel, film and processing already. Kodak has made a gracious and substantial film donation to our project, which has helped so much. However, processing and scanning will cost us thousands more over our travel expenses, which we'll either pay or hustle for ourselves.
Why Kickstarter? We want to bring you along. The more people involved with this project, the more people we'll meet on the road and the more fun it will be. And you will see, participate in and hopefully enjoy our work, which is our dream.
Are you in a Sizzler city? Where We Sizzle
Keep in mind that The Fishes love you whether you back the project or not, but back it because it feeels gooood and you'll get cool art.
