The Fisherman's Dog is a new waterfront food truck that is bringing the changing tides in Rockaway Beach to the bay side.
We are located along Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway's scenic waterfront overlooking Jamaica Bay and the Manhattan skyline. We're also 2 blocks from the beach and one or two blocks from the A train depending which stop you are coming from. We serve classic New York street food and a rotating menu of locally caught seafood including the trucks namesake “The Fisherman’s Dog” a fried cod loin in a hot dog bun with a lemon and dill aioli. Think of us as a new take on a New England style clam shack.
We are Terence McNicholas and Jared Adler and we're both 24 years old. We met in swimming class when we were still in elementary school and have been friends ever since. I (Terence) grew up working in my father's bait shop and Jared was a Jones Beach life guard by the time he was 16. I guess you can say we both love the ocean because we grew up with it being such big parts of our lives. It makes sense we can't get away from it.
When we both lost our jobs this year we met for a beer and a burger and instead of dwelling on the negatives we got to talking about possibly going into business together. Jared had once worked as a line cook in Freeport's nautical mile and I knew my way around the kitchen by watching and helping my Mom cook 6 nights a week growing up. We didn't have much savings, so a full size restaurant was never an option but we knew that if we looked hard enough we could find an affordable food truck and make something amazing out of it.
All we needed was a spot to park it and we were lucky enough to have an open spot 15 feet from the bay in beautiful Rockaway Beach 45 minutes from Manhattan and right next to my father's bait shop that he's run there for over 40 years :)
So we started looking for trucks and filing for licenses which at times felt endless but after 6 months of hard work we took all of our money out of the bank and bought ourselves a truck.
The kitchen equipment was great, the truck had plenty of room for the two of us and after about 2 weeks of cleaning and cleaning again the truck was spotless. We brought the truck in for health inspection on August 1st, 2012 and passed the same day. We had a menu with all of our food sourced, our pricing done and now we were officially licensed to sell food to the public.
So far business has been steadily building. The community in Rockaway is already showing a great deal of support and we feel very lucky to have the amazing location we do amidst such a vibrant year round community.
The only problem we can see is that our truck is in need of a new paint job and our lot some extra TLC. We quickly realized that in this industry curb appeal matters A LOT and that it wouldn't matter how great our food was if our truck still looked like this.
That's where you come in Kickstarter! We need your help to make this vacant lot and this beat up old truck look like they belong under a beautiful sunset like this one taken on August 1st, our opening day.
We were thinking something along these lines. Clean lines, classic color combination and just a little bit retro.
We have all the pieces to make this an amazing and unforgettable place. We have the location, the equipment, the passion, the know how and the drive. All we need is a little bit of extra cash flow to put it all together. So please Kickstarter help us achieve our goal to create a place like nowhere else on earth for a deserving community, friends, family, children and future kickstarters.
