About this project
"When a star high school baseball player is drafted by a big league team, he hides his homosexuality to preserve his promising career. When he is outed, he struggles to maintain his dignity and gain acceptance in the traditional world of professional baseball."
It's devastating to come out of the closet before you're ready, and in the world of professional sports in the United States of America, it's unheard of. Well, that story needs to be told, and we want to tell it.
We are making a feature film about the first person in professional sports to "come out" before they're ready. Brad Hawley is eighteen years old, and all he wants to do is play the game he's loved since childhood. Some don't want him to play—not because he's a bad ballplayer or because he's an offensive personality—but simply because he's gay.
We feel that "The First Out" will help in the on-going civil rights struggle for marriage equality and will be another voice against bullying, hate crimes and discrimination related suicides. This story's time is now.
Our director, Joshua B. Porter, is a professional filmmaker who went to the New York Film Academy, at Univeral Studios in Los Angeles, and works wonders with limited budgets. A few months ago, Joshua and his creative partner, Matthew Donaldson, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for a music video that was 125% funded. This time around, they're upping the stakes and can't wait to bring you along for the ride!
Great feature films cost a lot. Our film's budget is $2,000,000—still small compared to a studio picture—but that's not our Kickstarter goal. We're going for a more modest $30,000 because, with $30,000, we can court investors properly and prove there's interest in this story. How quickly we get to $30,000 is also a huge indicator, so please don't hesitate to make your pledge and secure your one-of-a-kind "The First Out" rewards!
However, that's just the start—when we get to $1,000,000, we'll actually go into pre-production on the movie. With that in mind, we will be introducing several "STRETCH GOALS" between $30,000--$1,000,000, so look for those to start rolling out as we approach 100% of our initial funding goal.
We'd love to see the LGBT community rally around this film. We know we're sitting on an important project and we want you all to fall in love with it, as much as everyone on The Team has. Be a part of film-making history and help make "The First Out" a reality.

Risks and challenges
One of our biggest challenges will be to complete this film as quickly as possible, with the highest level of quality that our budget can afford; lives are at stake. That said, our team of filmmakers and interested parties are highly qualified and motivated to follow this production through to the end ... with the goal of international distribution in our sights. We want this film to be funded by the people, because it is for the people, so one of our greatest challenges will be funding and maintaining creative control, free from big studios.
As with any film-making endeavor, we face a number of challenges. We are hoping to attach some "name" actors, some of which have already been contacted and are in possession of the script. Getting them on board will be challenging, and will ultimately come down to money and scheduling. Also, there is a bit of a bidding war between the state of New Jersey and the City of Stockton, CA to be the home of this production. That presents an entire realm of risks (e.g., traveling, shipping equipment to, or renting in, N.J., staffing East Coast crew, etc.).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
