The Faraway will be a cozy neighborhood bar & restaurant serving New American, farmer’s market-influenced small plates focused on great service with a jukebox & busy brunch.
The planned location is a beautiful single-story 100-year old building with lovely light. It's nestled on a corner in the Riverside neighborhood and a few minutes walk from the Cambridge Central Square train station. We aim to be an extension for the community, hosting pop-ups with chefs around the world, neighborhood-centered dinners and a place to gather regularly.
WHO WE ARE
We are sisters. Our family has charged the two of us to plan ALL of our family history-making events. Neela, because she can manage the workload. She takes account of everyone's needs, feeding them into a spreadsheet, and turning out a memorable & effortless experience. Danielle, because she can cook, grow & arrange the flowers, manage a team and make something out of nothing.
Danielle has 21 years of experience in the food & beverage industry across the country. She left Boston to discover & practice the intricacies of hospitality & after years of managing, serving, bartending, event coordination, farming, wine buying & plainly: taking care of people, she’s moved back home to start The Faraway.
Neela has spent her career in the corporate wholesale & retail industry. Her most recent work was managing the sourcing arm of the $58M tabletop business for Williams-Sonoma HQ in San Francisco & global offices. She has worked in all aspects of product creation — design, product development & sourcing. She is currently running her own custom watercolor & stationery business here in Boston.
OUR VISION FOR THE SPACE
We're working closely with a local builder to rehab the previous restaurant's footprint. We both have backgrounds in art & design, The Faraway will reflect that. To save money, and to showcase our talents, we'll be designing the space alongside the contractor.
Your contribution to The Faraway Kickstarter will help pay for:
- Adding a much needed all-access bathroom
- A unique bartop
- Kitchen flooring (it's in bad shape now!)
- Tables & chairs
- Purchasing kitchen & bar equipment, second hand when possible
The Faraway is named in honor of Georgia O’ Keefe an artist, a cook, a feminist. She signed her letters to her friends & mentors when she was a young traveling teacher,
From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You. We can't wait to welcome you & everyone in.
Risks and challenges
We know restaurants are risky, but with our collective 25 years experience from both within the industry and corporate offices, as well as our wide network, we will meet challenges head-on. We have local friends & family to support us through the demanding process of opening a small business, we expect to rely heavily on them while we get our feet under us.
There are risks and challenges when opening a small restaurant: liquor license approval, permitting, funding, city inspections. We're keeping these many pieces in forward motion to meet our goal to open in Late Summer 2019.
Although we were partially funded by close friends & family (Thank you!!!!!), our current challenge is raising this last portion of capital.
