 ////   THE EPIC FAIL GAME  ////

The Epic Fail Game is a set of 30 activity cards and a mindset theory book designed to change the way the whole family thinks about failing. The Epic Fail Game is created with primary school aged children (5-12yrs) in mind but designed to be fun for all ages. It comes in a beautifully designed & illustrated hard cover box and is printed using environmentally friendly inks and papers. There is no limit to the number of players or time needed. Play for hours on a Sunday afternoon, sneak a quick few activities before bed time or take a few out on the road.

THE EPIC FAIL GAME IS ABOUT HELPING KIDS TO BUILD RESILIENCE THROUGH FAILING
THE EPIC FAIL GAME IS ABOUT HELPING KIDS TO BUILD RESILIENCE THROUGH FAILING

////   WHY THE EPIC FAIL GAME?   ////

We designed this game because it feels like it's never been harder to be a kid.

A 2015 Federal Government report found that Australian children are more anxious than ever – and young minds around the world are no exception. In the US, suicide is the second leading cause of death for kids aged 10-18*. And in the UK, the number of kids seeking counselling for anxiety has risen 60% in just two years.

What’s going wrong?

It’s hard to place the blame on one source alone – because there are so many factors that have contributed to these trends. Studies point to everything from a lack of unstructured playtime and the pressures of social media, to busy parents and helicopter parents. There’s increased technology, too much sugar in everything and not enough sleep – the list seems never ending! It's not a wonder parents are doubling down on their protective instincts.

WHAT'S GOING WRONG?

Setting our kids up for success

We live in a time where change is fast and constant. Most of the jobs available to kids today don't even exist yet! In this paradigm, we believe the best skills we can hope to teach our kids today are adaptiveness, creativity and bounce-backness. But ironically, kids aren't getting many opportunities to practice these skills because their world has evolved into a weird place where every kid gets a medal for participation and every layer of pass the parcel has a prize. How will our kids learn resilience if we take away failing?

No judgement - as parents, we know first hand how hard it is to see our kids fall on their faces! That's why we wanted a few spoons of FUN to help the medicine go down. When we couldn't find it, we decided to build it.

The Epic Fail Game packs fun into learning :)

  • It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to connect away from telly and tech time;
  • It's a fun interactive way to engage a class - with unlimited players and no fixed times;
  • It’s powerful for children to see their grown ups (parents, carers, teachers or whomever) demonstrate vulnerability and willingness to fail themselves;
  • The cards are designed to delight with 30 unique illustrations created by award winning illustrator Carolina Relander (see our "Meet the Illustrator" section later down the page);
  • Each card includes a challenge as well as its corresponding rationale– if you understand why we’ve set these challenges, it might spark new challenge ideas to incorporate in your every day.

////   HOW TO PLAY THE EPIC FAIL GAME   ////

There are 30 Activity Cards - 22 (group play cards) are for playing together, and 8 (brave new day cards) are for injecting a little extra fail into your every day.

THE EPIC FAIL GAME COMES WITH 30 ACTIVITY CARDS

To start playing you'll need to gather a few extra materials (pens, papers, fruit, marshmallows and spaghetti - note: not all of the cards require extras so work with what you have!)

Lay the cards out challenge-side down on a flat surface and take turns to pick out an activity. Every player will complete each challenge together before moving to the next.

Play for as long as you like!

////  MINDSET THEORY BOOK  ////

Also in the box is a 24 page booklet capturing the science that's informed and inspired the game. Beautifully illustrated with insightful research and instructions on how to play.

Our intent with this book is to develop a resource that's accessible and interesting for both parents and kids. By embracing some of the ideas that sit behind our challenges, parents (and kids) can find new ways to inject opportunities to fail and learn in their every day!

////   ABOUT US  ////

The game was conceived by us: Susanna Kass and Yolanda Koning
The game was conceived by us: Susanna Kass and Yolanda Koning

Two reforming helicopter-parents with a few decades of professional experience in cultural psychology and design between us.

Susanna (Strategy Consultant, mum, The Epic Fail Game co- founder):

"I work with change, so like most people in my industry, I found the pace of disruption and innovation really exciting. I often worked with corporates who feared disruption, feared change yet wanted (needed) their culture to be more adaptive and brave in order to stay competitive.

When my 5 year old first started showing signs of anxiety I was baffled. Here was this kid who had the easiest life I could imagine.. what could he have to be worried about?

With some theory under my belt I started researching the convergence between new discoveries in brain plasticity, cognitive biases, and plundering the silicon valley start-up formula - fail fast and learn.

We essentially hoped by pooling together the best of these parallel streams of thinking, we could create some tools that were practical, tangible and FUN to grow resilience in our kids."

Yolanda (Design Director, mum, The Epic Fail Game co-founder):

"As a designer I know first hand the potential of applying creativity to communicate complex concepts in ways that are simple and engaging.

When my son was going through a tough year at school, I found myself searching for tools and ideas that could help me to support him. And while there is SO much information available online, none of it was very accessible for kids. It all just felt like therapy, but what he really responded to was learning through play.

Susanna and I were working together at a creative agency at the time, and over many cups of tea (and coffee) The Epic Fail Game idea started to take shape."

 🙌🏽  TESTIMONIALS   🙌🏽

All of the cards and content in the book has been co-created with close consultation with primary school educators; child psychologist; a friendship guru; parents – and lots of kids!

Here's some of what they had to say:

 ////   MEET OUR ILLUSTRATOR  ////

Carolina Relander is a Finnish born illustrator and graphic designer currently living in Sydney. She has won numerous awards for her clever, idea based illustrations . We have been lucky enough to work with Carolina on The Epic Fail Game - she brings so much fun and inspiration to the game.

Please have a look at all her other amazing work here: https://www.carolina-relander.com/

   ////  OUR ASK  ////

We need to print a minimum of 5,000 boxes for the cost to be viable. And we want to print it using recycled materials and vegetable ink dyes because if we want to teach our kids to thrive in the future, we’d better do what we can to help ensure there is a future!

To achieve this, we need $30,000AUD.

   ////  TIMELINE  ////

Our campaign will finish in August.

The artwork is ready to go so printing will begin in September. We will receive the boxes by November to ensure we can send products out in time for Christmas!

We aim to retail the box for $35AUD but we’re offering it for less to our supporters because none of this would be possible without you!

   ////  YOUR REWARDS  ////

Risks and challenges

Mass producing something physical with so many custom moving parts will always have some potential challenges. While we have produced digitally printed prototypes during our many testing phases, this will be our first 'print run' for the cards, and first ever box creation. Fortunately, both of us have years of design agency work experience under our belt and we are working very closely with a trusted Australian print manager for this first run so, with all fingers crossed, we believe we have mitigated the risk of production error to the best of our ability.
