Stories (okay, one story) & pictures directly into your (snail) mailbox, all on a convenient post-card-size medium (i.e., a postcard)!

UPDATE: SUCCESS!

We've reached our funding goal, thanks to you all! (Yes, even you.) This is just a quick note though to say that even though we say 100 sets of postcards in the video, that was the minimum run.  There is no maximum (unless we reach the tens of thousands, but at that point we'll hire butlers to do all the stamping for us), so continue to pledge if you want postcards in your mailbox!  And now back to your regularly scheduled project description.

Part 1: The Mailbox

I love mail.

I love the moment I open the mailbox and see mail inside, honest to goodness mail with a hand-written address, a hand- or type-written page or pages that claims itself worthwhile enough to be folded up and tucked into an envelope or written on a postcard and trudged out to the mailbox.

And this, my unknown friends and potential patrons, is what I have come to offer you.  Mail of your very own delivered by our illustrious postal service fronted with art by my own dedicated artist (Hi, Ashley!) (Hi, Andrew!) and printed with my own dedicated stories.

Dedicated to who? you might ask.

Dedicated to you! I might answer (if so asked).

Part 2: The Words & Art in Your Mailbox

This project is a collaboration between myself (a writer) and Ashley MacLean (a photographer).  The goal is to create stories and art that speak to each other, bounce off each other, take each other to dinner, and have tiny little artistic babies that we can give out to random strangers (who we hope will take care of them as though the babies were their very own).

I’ve been writing for over twenty years now, but only recently have I grown to see the power and beauty of flash fiction.  The form, for me, allows the creation of a complete world through a small window of words, while also only focusing on a small part of that world: a fragment of a story, a key point in a person’s life, a single emotion.

Ashley has been a photographer for over eight years, focusing on portraits and representations of the body.  In short, she takes pictures of people.  In her photographs she brings out what was hidden in a person, creating a new subject from the limited perspective of a single shot.

Both of us have been successful in our fields so far – we’ve had gallery showings and publications, readings and fellowships – but there’s something strangely impersonal about all of that.  There are veils of distance between us and the audience, whether an editor or a curator.  There is a difference between reading a story in a literary magazine or seeing a picture hung on a wall in a museum and having both right there in your hand.

We want to be right there in your hand.

Well, not literally, as that would be really awkward and, frankly, the idea is making me a little uncomfortable.

Part 3: Why, Oh Why, Kickstarter?

Because we literally couldn’t do this without you.

Oh, I suppose we could come up with the stories and the art on our own and print the postcards and… then… try to scour up a phonebook (one hasn’t been delivered to our house in ages) and randomly pick people to send postcards to.  But those people would probably throw the cards away as inscrutable and devious advertisements for a product they don’t really need.

But you need us.  You need art and literature in your mailbox in an easily digestible and transportable and hangable (with thumbtacks or tape, naturally) form.

And we need you.

See, the only way this project works is if we have a bevy of people (yes, I just wanted to use the word bevy) who are ready and eager to receive our postcards since, postcards, as you well know, are only useful for sending to people and an essential part of this project is sending out our finished postcards to people.  Or animals.  Or aliens.  Anyone, really, who’ll give us an address.  We’re not picky.

Part 4: Moneyopoly

We’re asking for $400 dollars, which will cover the production of the postcards and the postage to send the postcards as well as a tiny bit extra to cover the art we’re creating for you.

It’s not a lot of money, in the grand Kickstarter-scheme of things, but the project isn’t all that large, either.  See, we’re trying to be modest here.

So, we reach $400 and the project is funded!  What then?

Well, if the project is successful, then we will repeat it, creating a new series of four postcards with new photos and a new story and, ideally, sending that to the same old people we sent the first series of postcards to.  So, in theory, if this project takes off, you could have hundreds of postcards stuffing your mailbox, if we end up raising a hundred thousand dollars.

And you never check your mailbox.

At this level you get good feelings and congratulation from both myself and yourself. You want to support Art & Literature but you don't want to see evidence of it in your mailbox. You're shy, but giving, and you have too much stuff to read and look at already. I understand.

Postcards for you and two of your friends + Congratulations! You have funded the project! I am so excited and, wait, what? You want me to write a new, completely different story for the project? One based around your own three-word theme? Well, crap. I didn't know this was going to be so much work. (So, in essence, YOU will give me the prompt and I will write a new story based around the words you give me. The story will be 500 words or less so that it will be able to comfortably fit on the requisite four postcards. And we want the story to be comfortable, don't we?)

Postcards for you and two of your friends + I (i.e., Ashley) will take your portrait in the style of my (i.e., Still Ashley) work. This image may look strange to you, dependent on your outlook. But if you want a professional artistic portrait of yourself that is subject to the professional artistic whims of an artist, and you're in Houston or live within a few hours drive or want to fly down here, then this pledge level is for you! (And you only, because there's only one of these pledge rewards and it's going slow!) It's also fine if you want to fly me to wherever you are, but you have to get me home, too. You'll get a large print of the portrait and you'll be famous. Well, you'll get a large print. Sizing negotiable, but something upwards of 11x14, plus a decent sized digital scan of the image.

Postcards for you and two of your friends + I will write biographies of you and your two friends inspired by your respective names. These will be stories in the form of a biography and will be at least a thousand words long. These stories will be dedicated to you (well, your name will be in the title) and, though I will hold all rights to them, it will be your choice as to whether you secrete the story in your backyard in a stainless steel time capsule OR order me to release the story into the creative commons wilderness OR direct me to try and get the story published in an actual magazine. The question you need to ask yourself is this: Do you wish the fame epitomized by your very name to be spread far and wide across the land? Granted, this fame will be a lie, but if it makes you feel better, just realize that all of history is a lie, or so Mr. MacGruder, my high school history teacher told me. And, no, that never made me feel any better, either. (Hi, Mr. MacGruder!)
