WELCOME TO DRAGONFLY, FRIEND! We're so excited share our story with you.
On one side of the camera, Dragonfly is a story of homecoming and healing for a Minnesota family divided by divorce and illness. On the other side, it’s a story about three women tackling their dream of filmmaking head on and the amazing team of people who came together to devote their time and talent to making that dream a reality. It's been an exhilarating, humbling, beautifully wild ride and we’d love to have you hop on board and join our team!
First things first, thank you for your tremendous support! With your help, we reached our initial goal in record time! $45K was the bare minimum we needed to complete our film, so we're thrilled to have the opportunity to take this film to the next level. Check out the list below to see how additional funds can allow us to upgrade this film and create something really special together. We can't do it without you!
Post Production and Beyond: Our work doesn’t stop just because we've wrapped filming! Additional funding means we can:
- Secure a top notch film editor to interpret the footage we've shot and really bring Dragonfly to life.
- License music and incorporate original music from both established and emerging Minnesotan musicians to showcase local talent.
- Enhance our animation and motion graphics.
- Work in a true color suite to boost the beauty and production value of the film.
- Turn up the quality on our audio mixing and mastering.
- Submit and support Dragonfly at film festivals across the country.
- Provide real PR and marketing support for the film so that it finds a distributor and makes its way to a theater near you!
CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE STORY? We'd love to. Struggling artist Anna Larsen’s mother has never understood her. When her mom is diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s, Anna returns home to Minnesota to help care for her, but brings years of family baggage with her. However, the rediscovery of a magical “dragonfly” mailbox, and the search to solve its mystery, forces Anna to confront the fact that maybe she’s the one who doesn’t understand.
WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY? Back in November, Cara posted on Facebook that she really wanted to make a movie but was totally freaked out about doing it. As an actor, she knew her way around the front of a camera, but knew very little about what happened on the other side. Her friend Maribeth replied moments later saying: “I think I know a girl who can help.”
Maribeth is an amazing filmmaker and the idea of working together made us think that we could actually do this thing. But if we were going do it right, we needed a rockstar producer, so we reached out to Mim. Once Mim was on board, our dream really began to seem like a reality.
And we realized a really cool thing that we hadn’t planned on: we were three women at the helm of a feature film, something that almost never happens.
UM, IT'S THE 21st CENTURY. AREN'T THERE LOTS OF WOMEN IN FILM? In 2013, women accounted for a mere 16% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors. Crazy, right?
When we sat down to think about it, we realized that our Screenwriter, Directors, Executive Producers,Three Main Characters, Production Designers, Animator, and Storyboard Artist are all women. Not to mention the other absolutely brilliant women working on this film.
ANYTHING ELSE COOL ABOUT YOUR MOVIE? Yes! Our main character Anna looks at the world a little bit differently. Rather than see the world as it is, she illustrates over it to create the world as she’d like it to be. Amazing real-life artist Abby Duel is bringing Anna’s vision to life by animating on top of our film so we can see what Anna sees. She’s already started working on it and trust us, it’s very cool.
Also, Dragonfly takes place in 1989 as well as present day, so we’ve had a lot of fun bringing the late ‘80s back to life in locations all around Minneapolis.
Dragonfly is a bit of a love letter to Minnesota and we couldn't be more excited about the local press we've been getting. Check it out here.
OKAY, I’M INTO IT. WHAT ARE THE PERKS OF BEING A DRAGONFLY TEAM MEMBER? So glad you asked! We've put together some very cool, exclusive perks for our Kickstarter supporters at every level. Perks start at $5 and go all the way to $10,000.
10K! WHAT DO I GET FOR THAT, A PONY? Sadly no, but we will make you an Executive Producer of our film OR Hello Sunshine Films will make a documentary short film about your family, your business, or your passion project for you to use as you wish.
THAT'S SO COOL, BUT I DON'T HAVE 10K. No problem, neither do we. That's why we've got great perks for every donation level. For real. Check them out.
WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO? Great question. Here's a breakdown of what percentage of our budget goes where.
THANKS. ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WANT ME TO KNOW? Just one thing. We’re really excited to use Kickstarter to help fund our film because it also allows us to build a community. We want to create a great film AND we also want to use this opportunity to create a network of diverse people who can support, teach, and work with each other. So please, leave comments, reach out on social media, and connect with us and our community on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and at TheDragonflyMovie.com. We are thrilled to have you on this adventure with us!
WHO ARE YOU AGAIN? We're professionals in various areas of filmmaking and production embarking on our first feature film together. Two of us are moms, two of us are sisters (in-law), and two of us are over five feet tall. And we're the creators of Dragonfly.

Dragonfly is Mim's latest passion project and she is thrilled to be a part of the Dragonfly family.
Risks and challenges
We've completed filming, so we've already cleared a number of hurdles including, but not limited to, funding, casting, contracts, union approval, inclement weather, construction, and flight paths.
Moving forward, we know that post-production will present it's own unique set of challenges. We believe strongly in "planning to be flexible" and that by having a well-thought out road map and assembling an excellent team, we will be able to effectively and efficiently jump the hurdles that appear on our journey.
Similarly, the world of film festivals and film distribution is littered with obstacles. By creating the best possible film we can and then executing a well thought out marketing and PR plan for that film, we envision clearing these hurdles as well and making it all the way to the finish line - at a theater near you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
