About this project
Tom and Gary and the Elite Banana Task force are thrilled to be sharing the joy and madness of the Decentralized Dance Party with our Burning Man Brethren for the very first time.
But we're still reeling from three crazed, crowdfunded "Party Safari" tours in the past six months, which were successful in every regard, but way more expensive than we'd bargained for...
Thusly, our finances have been stretched beyond the beyond and sacrificing the majority of our remaining boombox fleet to the corrosive playa dust is going to be very difficult for us to recover from...
And so, we are appealing to those who are excited and inspired by our Open-Source Party Concept and Free-Wheeling Approach To Life to pitch in and help us to continue sharing the Party Revolution with as many people as possible, long into the future!
Sharing this Kickstarter page far and wide is greatly appreciated and any donation amount will really help us out. All the radical donor rewards will also be available for you to claim and enjoy right on the Playa, including vintage boomboxes and CrazySexyCool Jammypacks.
The plan is to host a free-roaming, Open-Source themed DDP, powered by over 150 synchronized boomboxes, guerrilla sound systems and Art cars that explores and interacts with as many other art structures as possible, in a full-throttle adventure that rages all over the Playa, from Sunset to Sunrise on Thursday August 30th!
The DDP Ethos aligns uncannily with The Ten Principles of Burning Man (Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leave No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy) and we are very excited to see what combining the two will produce...
We applied for Burning Man arts grants in 2011 and 2012. Here's an excerpt from our most recent submission:
PHILOSOPHICAL STATEMENT (provide a brief statement about what the Art means to you and what you wish to communicate to participants):
The Decentralized Dance Party is a portable, battery-powered Party system, with no Central audio source and no Central location.
It consists of hundreds of Party People, carrying vintage boomboxes, and a DJ who wears a backpack, containing a powerful FM transmitter.
All the boomboxes are tuned into the DJ’s master FM broadcast, resulting in a mobile, synchronized sound system. This Portable Dance Party roams the night, generating complete awesomeness, street by street and block by block, onto buses and subways, into public fountains and beyond. Inevitably interfacing with the public, together we create an infectious epidemic of fun. A Roaming Party Adventure that lasts all night long!
Participants become performers and inhibitions are overwhelmed as we all rise together in a chaotic and joyful monument to the Human Spirit. Together, we awaken the raw and beautiful rhythm and adventure-craving instincts ingrained in our DNA that have been subverted since childhood in our sterile western cultures and our collective energy projects everyone to unparalleled heights of happiness for hours on end. This is a revolutionary new type of open-source public performance art and something that truly has to be experienced to be believed.
We've now thrown 50 DDPs across Canada and the USA, and the participants often numbered in the thousands. There was generally a small police presence keeping an eye on things, but no drinking tickets, fights or any other problems one would expect from such large, wild crowds. That is because the prime objective at a DDP is celebrating life, enjoying music and having fun- not getting drunk and being an idiot.
More than a Party, the DDP has been a very interesting social experiment; clearly demonstrating that thousands of people of all ages, cultures and social groups can come together to celebrate life and get crazy in our public spaces without causing any trouble. That is why the DDP is also known as “The Party Revolution”. It is a unique force that has the power to overcome negative conditioning and unify and inspire the people of the world in ways never before imagined.
Our Party Manifesto provides all the details, defining Partying as "Forgetting Who You Are While Remembering What You Are".
Obviously, Burners are already less inhibited than most, but we would still love to share the experience with them and inspire as many Burners as possible to create their own DDPs and ensure that this becomes an enduring global movement that touches as many lives as possible.
INTERACTIVITY (interactivity is an essential aspect to the art of Burning Man. Describe how your concept is interactive - how will the citizens of Black Rock City interact with your art?
The interactivity factor is insanely high, as the participants literally BECOME the art for hours on end.
And mention must also be made of the Open-Source nature of the Decentralized Dance Party:
Much like open-source software, a DDP is a peer-produced, collaborative undertaking. Everyone pools their talents and energies to create and refine an ever-evolving manifestation of their hearts’ desires. People build sound systems in shopping carts and baby carriages, construct insane backpack-borne laser light shows, crowd-surf each other, construct hilarious costumes, and perform epic dance routines for everyone to enjoy. It all coalesces into an anarchic explosion of collaborative creativity that drives the energy and excitement to unimaginable heights for hours on end!
You will smile genuinely, you will make instant friends, you will lose yourself in the music and find yourself in situations so novel and thrilling that you will never forget them. The DDP is a revolutionary new type of Open-Source public performance art and something that truly has to be experienced to be believed.
This quote from the BM website describes the DDP experience quite well:
"Interactive art is our particular obsession. Interactive work convenes society around itself. It generates roles. It provokes actions. It directs attention to the surrounding world. It transforms participants into active contributors to your creative process. It transcends the static conception of an art object that is contemplated by a detached audience."
In spite of the uncanny alignment of our vision, ethos, and execution, the DDP was not chosen to receive a BM arts grant in either 2011 or 2012 :(
But we're hoping the greater Burning Man community will be less averse to supporting our efforts :)
The DDP is as much about Partying as it is about serving as an exemplar for the twin causes of Open-Source and Decentralization. This is because we recognize these movements to be the only hope for a peaceful, prosperous and positive future for Humanity.
- Rather than commodifying and compromising the integrity of this project via extraneous corporate sponsorships, we've used crowdfunding (Decentralized funding) to fund every single tour thus far.
- Party promotion in every city we visit occurs inspirationally, organically, and at no cost, via Decentralized mediums (social media).
- We are also developing an Open-Source guide to develop and disseminate the DDP around the world asap.
- And we are developing a revolutionary new boombox called the Social Stereo that will allow anyone, anywhere to create their own DDPs. It will be an Open Hardware project and the design, development and distribution will all be Decentralized. All details can be found HERE.
- And we will be hosting a "Dialogue On Decentralization" on the final Sunday of Burning Man. It will incorporate elements of the Decentralized Community and The Future Will Not Be Centralized and promises to be quite compelling. Details will soon be released.
- This Press Release also contains some information of import.
We are just a couple of crazy guys chasing our crazy dreams. Your support allows us to keep going and share the DDP with the world more quickly, efficiently and effectively and is greatly appreciated!
Unseasonably Warm Regards,
Tom and Gary
