We did it! Thank you so much to everyone who backed us. We do still need your help, though. If you'd like to know how your pledge will help, scroll down to the end.
The Dad Beats! began as a play date with an unspoken rule: leave us alone to write songs and we’ll let you trash the place. The pile of toys, books, stuffed animals and dirty washing got bigger and bigger. The songs got better and better. For a year, we tested and refined them at shows in Brooklyn, developing a loyal following at Lark cafe for our weekly gigs. Now we’re ready to record an album of original material and we need your help.
We believe that music for children needn’t bore their parents. We love our darlings too, but we refuse to listen to The Wheels On The Bus Go Round And Round ever again. Our songs are for little ones to dance to, big ones to laugh at and mums and dads to sing along to while they reach for the gin at the end of another joyful day.
In our world, the children have Too Many Toys and Tantrum Time is never far away. Boys who Don’t Stand On The Table grow up to be Super James. Girls that Don’t Do The Zoo get a trip to Jollity Farm. Older siblings tell themselves I Will Not Crush My Baby Brother and Bad Dads believe in germs.
So far, most of our recordings have involved standing around a single microphone, juggling at least one baby and ignoring the toddler chaos unfolding in the background. Sometimes it's not a total disaster but we think the songs deserve to be professionally recorded, mixed and mastered.
I Will Not Crush My Baby Brother - The Dad Beats
With your help, we can book studio time, hire mix and mastering engineers and pay for the rights to a couple of our favourite children’s classics – Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Vegetables. We have some great incentives to encourage you to chip in.
So if you’ve ever changed a diaper while checking your email, if you’ve ever marveled at a crayon artwork then wiped it off the wall, or if you’ve ever thought “there must be more to life than Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” then the Dad Beats! have the cure for what ails you. Please help us make our album. Please tell your friends. Thank you very much for your support.
We raised our goal! Now what?
It is so encouraging that we were able to raise the money in a fortnight. We are enormously grateful to everyone who has backed us so far and look forward to working on this album.
We now have a little time to raise more money, above our original target. We’ll be using every additional dollar to make this album. Studio time is expensive, but you’ll be able to hear the difference with enough time for professional recording, mixing and mastering. We’ll bring in some musicians to help play on our songs. And the best way to get professional musicians to learn, play or even write a part is to pay them something, even if they’re your best friend. It’s now possible, with your generosity, that we might even be able to pay some babysitters to help out so that we don’t have to neglect our children to finish this album.
We’re grateful to have gotten this far, and now we have some new goals: If we get to $8,000 we’ll make a video for one of our songs, to be chosen by a poll of our backers, and if we get to $10,000 we’ll commission some of our talented illustrator friends to help us to make a book, with a page for every song on the album.
Risks and challenges
The Dad Beats! are real dads. Between taking care of our kids and working, there isn't a whole lot of spare time. But, we are committed to seeing this project through to the end. Stomach flu, temper tantrums, messy houses, busy schedules and bone-weary exhaustion can only keep us down for so long. We have each other to egg ourselves on, and with your support, we'll also have you! Knowing that you are waiting on this album will help us to get it finished. We'll give up the few hours of sleep we've managed to scrape together and call our 'night' to work to finish this album.
And the album is only the beginning. We want people to hear it. There's a number of ways that the Dad Beats! community can help us beyond financial support. We want to make videos for our songs and an illustrated book to accompany them. We'd love to keep writing music and playing together and record more albums. We'd love to book some gigs at bigger venues. We'd love to see our music make it into kids shops and record stores.
