About this project
Blazing trails and sparking creativity in everyone…..
It's the season for The Crucible's most notable ambassador, to take to the road to inspire and educate people of all ages about the wonders of exploring and learning skills in the industrial arts. The Educational Response Vehicle (ERV) is not your ordinary fire truck; it’s a 1960 International Harvester fire engine, repurposed as a demonstration platform for industrial and fire arts. We need your help to get ERV roadworthy and meet the many requests for appearances at schools, fairs, and community events throughout the Bay Area. Our goal is to raise $7,500 to prepare ERV for the spring/summer season of educational outreach throughout the Bay Area.
In full operation, ERV supports simultaneous demonstrations of blacksmithing, arc welding, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, and glass flameworking. Not only that, unlike typical fire engines that put flames out, ERV has an on-board accumulator flame effect (poofer) to draw attention by shooting flames 30 feet in the air.
ERV is the iconic representative of The Crucible and it needs constant attention to stay on the road. To keep its shiny red finish free of rust and dents, ERV must be continually painted; to replace just one of its 6 tires costs over $300. ERV uses a lot of juice - its two 6-celled batteries power the 24 volt system and must be replaced annually; three 100 lb. propane cylinders are used during each demonstration outing to fuel the forge and the poofer. The old flat head engine requires an experienced mechanic for tune-ups and maintenance, and the on-board generator which powers the crane and welding equipment needs continual attention. The volunteers and staff members who accompany ERV on outings would be grateful to have the crane work properly for easier loading of equipment, and our blacksmith would like to install a new and improved forge.
Each year The Crucible reaches thousands of adults and youth through outreach utilizing ERV. With your help, we can keep this remarkable resource on the road and in our communities, bringing the message that everyone can be inspired to make and do wonderful things.
