About

Living in the Rust Belt, for some, isn't easy. Businesses are wandering to greener pastures, taking jobs with them. With jobs goes money. With money goes prosperity. When that leaves, you get decay.

Life in the Rust Belt is an attempt to capture this decay in images snapped directly from the areas affected by it. Expect rusting machinery, overgrown lots, abandoned factory sites, collapsing buildings, and old houses left to rot. A lot of it will simply be me, my car, and my camera, wandering around decaying factory sites and seeing what kinds of images I can snag along the way.

This story is simply not being told. Time to change that.

The money will go toward paying the expenses of doing this sort of thing. Gas, food, and hotel stays if I end up travelling a lot. Some of the money will also go toward hiring the expertise of the fabulous Jim Kronmiller, if there is funding enough. If funding gets exceptionally high, I'll pick up a less terrible camera just for the occasion.

Early on, most of the photographs will be from Venango County in Pennsylvania. I live here, know the area, and will be able to dig up all sorts of dead oil wells and the like. If funding allows, I'll be travelling to Pittsburgh, various parts of Ohio, and hopefully Detroit as well.

Though the goal is set fairly low (low enough to fund travels in the area, at least), I'm hoping for enough to make several forays into the surrounding world. The more money raised, the further away I go, the more pictures I take, and the more tacos I eat. If funding gets exceptionally high, I'll be taking time off of work to focus on the project. In that case, some of the money will go toward paying my bills for the duration of the leave.

No matter what happens, I'll be setting up a blog to chronicle the adventure, as well as tossing pictures on the internet as I get them taken.

Those of you that are donating money from very far away places and are getting things sent to you, please, kick in an extra $5 or $10 for shipping costs. Thanks.
