Copper has been used for many years in all different types of objects, from jewelry and buttons, to utensils and cups. It has a very unique feel and immediately exudes a sense of quality and value.
Copper is a very attractive metal and has a solid, quality feel to it. With a world that is turning more toward inexpensive, mass produced "disposable" goods, fewer products are made with quality materials such as copper, and instead replaced with plastics. This is due to the fact that copper is a semi-precious metal, and with its high melting temp and difficulty to work with, copper is being seen less and less in household products. My goal is to change this by making quality handcrafted copper products that have been lost in a world of cheap consumer goods.
Why I want these to be handmade:
Dice have been used for thousands of years, and up until the past century, they have been handmade out of quality materials. I want to bring back that lost craftsmanship; this is why I designed a series of dice that are all handcrafted out of solid, pure copper. Each dice measures approximately 16mm in size. I have four designs to choose from, but have more in mind if my goal is met. I want to bring back, "Old World craftsmanship", where products told a story and were cherished by their holder with pride. I want to create a set of dice that actually feel like they came from a world long gone, for games themed in centuries past.
The First Step:
The process begins by cutting little cubes from a square copper stock. I already have a source lined up to get the correct size stock, made out of recycled pure copper.
Forming the Dice Cubes:
Once I have the rough cubes, I then use a grinder to remove all the burs and rough edges.
After grinding, hand sanding is done to make them a perfect cube. This will allow the player to roll these dice on a wooden surface without damaging the tabletop with sharp corners.
Stamping the Dice:
After the dice are sanded down, they are cleaned and ready for stamping. Each side of the dice is individually stamped into the copper. Careful attention is paid to make sure that the orientation of the numbers are correct and that they are centered on the face.
Adding the "Aged" look:
Each dice is dipped into a solution that I use to add a nice antique patina. The real contrast occurs when the dice is buffed out; leaving the image darker, revealing the natural copper. Then, each dice is quality checked and ready to roll!
Now 8 Designs to choose from:
I have four initial designs to choose from and now four more! If I am able to reach a stretch goal of $5,000, I will have a few other designs that I will make dies for. I also have plans for doing some D4 & D12 dice. I plan on debuting these within a few days of launch, which would become available with a stretch goal! Below are examples of each of the initial designs. When making your pledge, feel free to choose any style of dice you may like. You may choose more than one design if you like.
Need a particular number of dice?
If you are needing more dice, you may get extra dice by adding $10 to your pledge amount for each additional dice needed. For example, if you are wanting a total of 7 dice, get the leather bag with 5 and just add $20 on to it for the additional dice. Should you have any questions, just send me a message! When the campaign is over, I will send out surveys requesting the type of dice and location to send them to.
Why I want to do this:
Working with copper and creating these dice is truly a labor of love. The work that goes into them will result in a set of dice that is unlike any you can buy in this consumer market. These are truly handcrafted and great pride is taken when making them. Your support to help bring these to life is greatly appreciated and I hope that you enjoy playing with these dice for years to come!
Like how many ancient and handcrafted pieces are, these dice are not intended to be mass produced and I can only create a set number of these each day. My intention is to create a product that will bring you just as much pride and enjoyment using them as it does playing the actual game they are intended for. I believe this product will do just that!
No matter how these dice land, you'll always love the way they roll!
We met our first stretch goal!!!
Thanks to everyone who has backed this campaign, we met our first stretch goal of $5,000 just a couple days ago. As promised, I have been working on finalizing four more designs. Below is a digital rendering of the additional designs that you may choose from. I don't have the stamp made so I can't actually show a sample of the dice yet, but I will have them for show before you submit your choices for designs at the end.
Current projects I'm working on:
While this campaign has been going, I have also been trying to build a website for my copper pieces. While it's not up and running yet, (aiming to have finishing around two or so months after this campaign is ended) you will be able to get more information about these dice as well as be able to order them after this kickstarter campaign has ended. That way if you need more dice for a particular game or want additional designs, you will be able to do so! As time permits, I will also be creating other new handcrafted copper pieces! Once the website is up, the address will be as follows:
I just did up a Facebook page as well. Please "Like" us if you have a chance and see what all I am working on and upcoming projects. You can go to www.Facebook.com/TheCopperKingdom
Risks and challenges
Having already created a few of the initial dice and since I have worked with copper many times before, I don't anticipate any problems. The biggest hurdle would be dependent on the success of the campaign, and crafting them as quickly as I can. Since they are entirely handmade, I can only create so many dice in a day. To help solve this, I have a few people lined up who can help make these with me so orders can be shipped out in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
