About The Collector
After winning the lottery, Frederick Clegg, a lonely entomologist, buys a big house in the countryside and kidnaps Miranda Grey, a beautiful twenty-one years old art student with whom he has been obsessed for some time. After a long period of preparations and observations, he forcefully brings Miranda to his own cellar, especially modified to house her for a long time. He treats her nicely, buying all she desires in terms of food, clothes, books, music, and art. He fulfills her every need except her want to be free. He holds her captive, without any connection to the outside world, in the hope that she will eventually grow to know and love him.
Frederick is unable to adapt to the modern, the real world. He lives in a world of dreams and fantasies, unconsciously influenced by popular TV shows and movies. He believes that he can build a parallel world for himself and Miranda, where they can live happily together as husband and wife. As long as he thinks that he can make her fall in love with him, it doesn’t matter that Miranda is a prisoner living in a room in his secluded basement.
This is the story of The Collector by John Fowels that has been adapted for the stage by Mark Healy. It has only been performed in the UK twice and it has never been performed in Romania.
I visited Bucharest several times throughout 2012 and found it to be a fascinating, culturally rich and vibrant city - a place I was drawn to and kept wanting to go back to. Whilst there I met theatre director Theo Herghelegiu, set designer Dan Titza and fashion designer Sandra Galan who were keen to collaborate on a joint UK - Romanian theatrical production. I suggested The Collector and Theo, Dan and Sandra liked it. They showed me how possible it is to make an artistic project happen in Bucharest, how accessible the artistic scene is and how enthusiastic, willing and committed a Romanian creative team are. This was a breath of fresh air. Theo, Dan and Sandra made me realise that Bucharest was the right place and this was the right time to put on The Collector.
London and beyond...
After Bucharest in April, we've been invited to take part in the Notting Hill May Festival, which in its own words describes itself as 'a place that brings together artists at all stages of their careers. Creating opportunities for emerging talent to develop themselves, and established talent to be inspired, the festival is a place that energises the arts with new ideas. Situated in beautiful, intimate and friendly settings, the festival brings the arts and a diversity of people together, changing perspectives and encouraging social, emotional and intellectual aspiration through the arts.'
We're honoured to have been invited to take part in the festival and hope that it will keep the production alive and allow us to spring board on to other theatrical events including the Edinburgh Festival in August 2013 and hopefully...you're home, office or school - locations with basements will be particularly welcome!
Your money will allow us to fund the set and costumes, and hire venues. It will also allow us to transfer cast and crew from Romania to the UK and keep this a truly Romanian-UK production.
It will allow us to entertain you, to engage you, to move you, to inspire you and for you to become an integral part of this production.
It will forge new, lasting and meaningful relationships, we will become friends, a community, a mutually beneficial enterprise that will enrich all our lives.
We have some great rewards on offer, some of them will get you deeply involved in this production.

Risks and challenges
If we don't raise the funds it will limit the longevity of this production - we may not be able to bring the cast and crew from Bucharest to London, we may not be able to move the production to Edinburgh...we may not be able to bring the play to your home, office or school.
The challenge will be keeping this production alive so that we can entertain, move, inspire and educate audiences in Romania and the UK.
Be entertained, be moved, be inspired, invest and become part of The Collector.
We thank you greatly, from our hearts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
