The project started when I was looking for different artists to help produce interesting header card and sticker illustrations for my first soft vinyl toy, Rowlii. This is when I first saw the illustration work of Acid Ma. It was after seeing the header card that he created for DIEMOUSEKaiju that I knew I needed to ask if he would create the initial artwork for the first Rowlii release. I sent him a message, he agreed, and we have been brainstorming ideas ever since.
The more I looked at Acid Ma's illustrations the more I wondered why none of these characters have been made into a toy. I asked if he’d be interested in giving it a shot and he told me that he has very much wanted to make a toy but has never really gotten into sculpting. I asked if he would consider letting me try sculpting one of his illustrations. I showed him the illustration of his that I thought would make an interesting toy and it turned out it was one of his favorite illustrations he’s done. This being the case he gladly agreed to let me give it a shot!
After getting the green light I immediately got to work. Since we live on different continents, the collaboration process has all been done through pictures, emails, and instagram messages. We went back and forth many times until we felt the sculpt was complete. Once it was decided that it’s exactly how we want it to look it was packaged up and sent to the factory. The wax prototype and metal molds are currently being made and we expect to have test pulls in January! As soon as we see the test pulls and agree that everything looks right production can begin immediately. With your help we are hoping that The Cherv’ will be ready to send out early 2019!
Phobia Toys is still a very new soft vinyl toy adventure. It started this year with my first ever vinyl toy, Rowlii. The hope is that Rowlii is the first of many toys to be produced in the years to come. The idea with Phobia Toys is to find the perfect balance between cute and grotesque. It’s a hard balance to achieve with a toy but I think when it is done well the results can be incredible. Phobia Toys is also all about collaborations. Though the brand is very young, we have already had the opportunity to work with some very talented artists. It is so great to see how different artists approach the same toy in their own unique way. So far the collaborations have only been painting, but with this kickstarter we are trying to take it a step further by actually collaborating on the toy itself! With collaboration in mind some of the reward levels will be one-offs done by some amazing artists that have agreed to paint The Cherv’ the way they see fit.
Acid Ma is no stranger to the soft vinyl toy scene. He has worked with many different toy artists (Chokehzrd, Planet-X, Demonstay, DIEMOUSEKaiju, Apos Toys, JXN Toys, Video Vomit, Oltretomba, to name a few) and has created header cards for a number of really incredible toys. Acid Ma grabs inspiration from all around him. He especially draws from 80-90's street art culture, hip hop, punk, cartoons, comics, and manga. He loves to create new characters and tries to make something new with each work of art. It has been a dream of his for quite sometime to see his creations in toy form. He has developed a variety of great designs with the hopes of turning them into vinyl toys, however, this will be the first one to actually make it to production. Though it's the first, I expect that we will see many toys designed by Acid Ma to be joining collectors shelfs across the world in the near future!
My name is Ben Farnam and I am so excited to have the opportunity to help bring one of Acid Ma’s wild characters into the soft vinyl world. I started collecting vinyl toys around 2007 and have had an unhealthy obsession with them ever since. Shortly after becoming a collector I started modifying DIY platform toys and trying to sculpt my own toys. I haven’t had any formal training so there was a lot of trial and error along with some pretty hideous looking toys! With the dream of making my own toys I continued to practice for many years. Though I am not anywhere near where I want to be, I finally got to a point this year where I thought what I was making was good enough to be made into my first vinyl toy. It’s hard to describe the feeling of sculpting clay for hours and hours on end, sending it off half way around the world, and finally receiving a giant box with a bunch of vinyl toy reproductions, but it is something I hope to experience again and again in the years to come!
The Cherv' is approximately 5" x 4.5" x 3.5"(L x W x H), with 7 points of articulation. The images shown below depict the original clay sculpt as well as the wax prototype. Though not completely visible in the pictures,The Cherv' is sculpted so that the body of the worm is elevated off of the ground. We will continue to update pictures throughout the campaign, including images of the molds, as they become available from the factory.

Risks and challenges
I am confident that production will go smoothly, however, it is always possible that issues could arise and potentially delay the final delivery date. I will make sure to communicate with all backers should any issues arise that cause a delay in production. Please note that delivery of one-off customs depend on the time it takes for the individual artist to complete their work. We will communicate with individual artists and update specific backers about expected delivery dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
