Hi, Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter page! My name is Elizabeth and I am the founder of The Cat’s Meow Café. We are so excited to start saving cats in Miami and are looking forward to opening our first location in March 2019! We need your help to give us the final push we need to bring an amazing space that will help rescued kitties find their furrever home.
What is a Cat Café?
The first ever Cat Café opened in Asia in 1998, but the concept did not become popular until Japan opened their own in 2004. This feel good experience made its way to the UK, Europe, Australia and recently, in the United States. CatTown, located in Oakland California was the first U.S. Cat Café to open its doors to rescued cats, in 2014. There are over 60+ Cat Café’s in the U.S., but only two in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale DMA.
So what exactly is a Cat Café?
A Cat Café is an environment where you can relax, indulge on pastries and coffee (or tea) while cuddling with cats! The best part, you ask? All cats locally rescued and are up for adoption! The café area and cat rooms are separated by a partition wall for no cross-contamination. But don’t fear, you’ll be able to take your goodies into the cat room, just watch out for the clever kitty trying to feast on your treats. Our cat room will function as a great source of enrichment for the cats, who will roam freely within the facility. Our "Cat-i-faction" designs within the room will also serve as a creative showcase for future adoptive parents.
MIAMI, WE HAVE A HOME! We are excited to join the MiMo District and bring the first Cat Café to this electric neighborhood. Finally, our zoning is approved, our lease is signed and we are ready to build this amazing space that will help rescue cats find their new best friend.
The Cat's Meow Café is a unique approach to pet adoptions. While we are an extension of the shelter, the experience at the cat café is one of its own. Our cats will roam freely within the cat lounge and enjoy an environment that is safe enough for them to build and foster positive connections with our guests, and hopefully, potential adopters. Our space allows for our guests to connect with unique cat personalities, which in hopes, can create a tighter bond between humans and cats and optimistically, reducing owner surrender cases.
We will care for 15-20 cats at a time and they’ll all be vetted, spayed/neutered as part of our adoption process. We act as a big foster home for our cats and are responsible for their care during their time with us. All our foster cats come from our local shelter, Miami Dade Animal Services. Partnering with MDAS will help ease intake, especially during Kitten Season when a lot of kitties are born. Our opportunity to provide temporary homes allows the shelter to continue doing their great work by rescuing more cats in our communities.
Zoning was approved for us to hold a Beer and Wine license. Yeah, you read that right. The Cat's Meow Café will not only have 15-20 adoptable cats but we will be providing mouth watering pastries, eccentric coffee and teas, and yes, we will offer our guests local craft beer and wine! Get ready for the best Happy Meowour in Miami! Other Services we will provide are: Yoga with Cats, Bingo/Trivia Nights, and TNR certification classes. We provide education towards cat advocacy as we believe that understanding cat behaviors is key to building a strong connection with your feline friend.
Our pastry partner is a local Miami chef, Pedestal Deserts, who specializes in unique and seasonal flavors that keep you wanting more. Our cat themed menu will include vegan and gluten free options. Each pastry will be themed to remind you of the feline lifestyle. We have an exciting coffee partnership in the works. Our backers will be the first to know, so make sure to back us and stay tuned for the special announcement!
Our location has so much potential and we want The Cats Meow Café to be the best possible experience for everyone. But we need your help to make that happen and your generous pledges will help us get there!
Included below is a breakdown on how your support will help boost our race to the finish line.

With great optimism, we also hope to reach our stretch goals so we can continue to make our space the best it can be for our feline friends during their stay at the Café.
Making A Difference
Miami has an estimate of 300,000+ homeless cats. In part of our mission, we want to create awareness towards cat advocacy, specifically Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) and spay/neuter efforts by providing certification classes and learning sessions to help you feel confident enough to take part of a great cause. Our Café will provide temporary homes to 20+ cats at a time which means, the shelter will have 20 extra available cages that they can fill. The fact we have this platform and are able to save cats in double digits truly makes our heart full of warm and fuzzies.
Our mission here at The Cat's Meow Café is to foster positive connections between humans and cats by providing a safe space and a temporary home to our adoptable cats.

Risks and challenges
All designs along with the menu must be submitted to the Health department for preliminary approval. We have direct contacts at the department and hope to expedite this process so we can proceed to the next phase in submitting our plans to the city.
Currently, our biggest hurdle. Obtaining permits with the city can take as long as 3 months. We hope to expedite this process by hiring a professional permit expeditor that has experience with the city. We have negotiated free rent into our lease agreement for this purpose and we hope to be open before this period expires. Knowing that we are introducing a new concept to the county, we were aware of the hurdles that were in our path in regards to zoning. The City of Miami has approved our zoning request for our intended use along with beer/wine.
This campaign is All-Or-Nothing. If we do not reach our goal, you will not be charged as we would not receive any funds. The key is to reach and over exceed the stretch goals so we can create the best space for our kitties!
