This is a project to enable Erdreja's premier satirical viking folk band The Bricks to finally get back into the recording studio, more than 10 years after their debut A Brick Over Troubled Mortar, to record their long-anticipated follow-up, Never Mind The Ologs. The album will feature the full current Bricks line-up of Lester Starcraft (aka Stephen McGreal), Thorkal Gudbardsson (aka Neil Albrechtsen), and Cassius (aka Sammo Pinney).
We'll be working with Brendan McGreal, the same engineer who recorded A Brick Over Troubled Mortar. He specialises in folk music, and although we're the only Satirical Viking Folk band he works with, he's familiar with our approach and sound, so should get us sounding all good. We'll be working with much better studio equipment than last time, so the end result should sound even better than before.
The CD will feature original cover art by Ian Bowden, which will be awesome. Bricks fans will know Ian's work from the cover of the Lester - Unplugged & Unhinged EP, although his work has been seen widely in a variety of best-selling videogames, exhibitions, and on TV.
LOKI'S BACKER BONUS BARGAIN BONANZA
That's right - as well as the backer rewards you see on the right, there's some EXTRA STUFF you can get if you want it. Simply choose the backer tier you want, and then add the extra price onto your pledge (or, if you've already backed, click Manage Pledge and increase the amount accordingly). We'll contact you if funding is successful to make sure you get the bonus rewards you wanted.
A BRICK OVER TROUBLED MORTAR / LESTER UNPLUGGED & UNHINGED DOUBLE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD - £12 - It seems that some people were unaware that we'd done a first album, or a Lester "solo" EP. They're available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify already, and although this backer bonus will cost you about the same as buying it from one of those places, if you get it direct from us as a backer bonus then we get (nearly) 100% of the money when we need it most - whilst crowdfunding for the next album!
TICKET TO AN EXCLUSIVE GIG BY THE BRICKS, AT THE GATHERING 2015 - £10 - The Bricks have not played live together since before the Cataclysm, but they'll be playing a one-night-only gig, exclusively for the Kickstarter backers who select this option. Exact time and location TBC, but probably Saturday evening of the Gathering, and almost certainly in a comfortable and well-lit tent, with hired door staff, drinks and nibbles, and at least a couple of hours of entertainment.
Want more than one ticket? Just increase your bid accordingly to get more!
Backed at the £100 level or above? We'll throw a pair of tickets into your backer reward for free!
OTHER AWESOME THINGS - TBA
I DON'T UNDERSTAND. WHAT'S ERDREJA? AREN'T ALL THE VIKINGS EXTINCT? WHAT'S WITH THE SILLY HAT?
Oh, you mean you're not already aware of our work? Okay, this is going to take some explaining... There's this hobby called Live Action Roleplaying, often abbreviated to LARP, and often described as "cross country pantomime". It exists in the eerie nomansland between tabletop roleplaying, battle re-enactment and cosplay. The Bricks are an in-character (IC) band in the Lorien Trust game universe, set in a world called Erdreja. The band members (or rather, the characters they play) are all Norscan - that is, from a culture based loosely on the Vikings. Imagine something like a fantasy/viking version of Tenacious D, or Flight of the Conchords, but with three members and not quite as good.
Never Mind The Ologs will feature songs with themes such as: viking gods and warriors, drinking, smut, drow, werewolves, vampires, demons, warlocks, goblins, censorship, and other people and places to visit in Erdreja. Whilst some of our songs are about specific elements of the game world, others are a bit broader in appeal, and there's something for anyone with an interest in fantasy or musical comedy. We like to do songs with jokes that work for a family audience - whilst some of the references can be risque or laden with double-entendres, we don't actually do The Swears.
NEVER MIND THE OLOGS - TRACK LISTING
Here's what we want to include on the album (note: running order might change, and we might not get all of these done, but this is what we're aiming for)
Satirical Viking Folk Song
Just Like You
A Wolf Prince Should Never Have Fleas
Everything Good Is Norscan
Holidays In Graecia
All The Boys
Proper Drinking Song
The Evil Curse of the Knob Gag
Goblin Sexy Dance
Norks (Bricks redux)
The Official Line (Bricks redux)
The Carpentry Song (Brick redux)
STRETCH GOAL - DIFFICULT SECOND ALBUM
We've got other stretch goals planned if the Kickstarter looks like it's going well, but let's start with the big one: As well as recording Never Mind The Ologs, we also really want to record Difficult Second Album, our album of "serious" songs. If we reach the stretch goal, we'll record the album and send it out FOR FREE alongside any digital or physical copies of Never Mind The Ologs. Here's the proposed tracklisting (again, subject to change)
Heroes of Vanaheim
Song For Tieraneth
Fields of Vanaheim
Winter Has Fallen
Behind The Mask
Dominion of the Sword
OTHER STRETCH GOALS
More money = More awesome. Some of the other awesome things we can do with more money include:
- An extra day in the studio, to record more tracks or improve ones we've already recorded.
- Hiring musicians to help "fill out" the sound of our tracks. We're not planning on going crazy and over-producing things, but some bass and percussion and the occasional solo on an interesting instrument would be wonderful.
- Better packaging for the CDs. The budget allows for very simple packaging, but more money here could let us do something much more lavish.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that we are fundamentally not very competent. This is our second album, but our first Kickstarter. On the Kickstarter side of things we've mitigated that risk by seeking advice from people who have already run and delivered on successful campaigns, so we have access to good advice if we find ourselves stuck.
On the musical side of things, we're confident that between us and the studio magic of our engineer we can do the songs justice. We wrote them in the first place, after all. This project does revolve around us being able to do a solid 7 days of recording and mixing, so there's some risk there: Schedules will be tight, and if illness or other "real life" stuff impinges on that, we could have some troubles. However, if that turns out to be the case, there's some scope for rescheduling the studio time, and/or doing additional recording work at alternative studios. Hopefully it shouldn't come to that, though.
On delivery, we've got experience from the last album of designing CD packaging, dealing with duplication, etc. We've dealt with T-Shirt printing companies before (although not for The Bricks). Some things are new to us, though: For instance digital distribution of music (we're used to dealing with "paid" digital distribution - iTunes, Amazon, etc. - but not free hosting). But we know tech-savvy people, we can figure it out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
