About

INTRODUCTION

Hello again! I’m Brian Gleine (@the.briang on Instagram and @briangleine on Twitter.) You may have read my children’s books or contributions to Vagabond Comics, or maybe you remember me from my time as the sidekick on the late DCR Podcast. Maybe you’ve met me in person at a convention or Free Comic Book Day event!

My current bread and butter is ENAMEL PINS. I made my first pin last November as kind of a bucket list thing because it seemed fun, and now I can’t stop. I’ve even gotten to design pins for some very cool people that I *don’t think I can talk about yet,* but trust me, it’s awesome. My previous Kickstarter finished out my first wave, and now with one under my belt and a greater understanding of how the site works, I’m going to try my hand at one of those “Unlock the Design”-style campaigns to jump-start my second series.

To start out the second wave I have not one, but TWO penguins. If you know me in person, you might think “it took you an entire YEAR to make a penguin?” Yes. Yes it did.

First we have the ADELIE PENGUIN, which is your basic unit of flightless waterfowl. When you think of a penguin and you don’t hear Morgan Freeman in the background, you’re probably thinking of these guys. Thanks to the cartoonish ring of white around their eyes, they basically look like living stuffed animals, and HD nature documentary footage of them constantly tripping and bumping into each other somehow only makes them seem LESS REAL. A timeless classic; the best penguin.

Second we have not just a rockhopper, but a ROCKN'ROLLHOPPER PENGUIN.  Easily the most stylish and musically-inclined of the penguins. Also, this one is a lightning bolt enthusiast, apparently. 👀👨🏻‍🎤

So, thanks to conventions and commissions, to unlock those first two designs you only need to cover the funding for one: $350. That covers the printing cost of the pins, shipping & handling, taxes and Kickstarter fees. Unlocking the first tier will also allow you access to my entire first wave of pins, giving you SEVEN total choices.

From there, every new price tier unlocks a new design I have planned for Wave 2. There’s a little extra to get to that last one because I want it to glow in the dark, which isn’t cheap, but DOES make for a nice, round number.

A FEW TIPS ON PLEDGING

The great thing about Kickstarter is that you do not get charged until the campaign ends successfully, and in the meantime you can increase, decrease or remove your pledge as needed until the counter ticks down on that last day. HOWEVER, that does leave me with a request for you:

Please ONLY PLEDGE FOR THE PINS THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE CURRENT TIER. The end of a campaign is tense enough as it is, but that’s also when people are most likely to realize they may need to downgrade their pledge. So, the last thing we would need is someone else suddenly retracting their bid because they wanted pins that we were multiple tiers away from. That could mean the difference between whether or not a lower level pin gets funded!

Of course, if you’re the person that’s going to tip the scales to another design level, then *by all means.* [unhooks velvet rope and gestures inside]

THE REWARDS

During my last Kickstarter I made a million different reward tiers and honestly made things way more complicated than they needed to be. This time, it’s simple: just tell me how many pins you want.   You will choose which pins you want at the end of the campaign from the list of unlocked pin designs, in any quantity.  You want to buy six Rockhoppers?  Knock yourself out.   The only pin I would expect to be in danger of running out of is the Whatever Bee, but if I have to reprint that one, I'll deal with that on my own.  They've earned their keep.

OCTOBER 10-12: EARLY (FLIGHTLESS) BIRD PRICING: Nothing helps instill confidence in a campaign better than early backers, so the first three days you have a chance to get in and *pay less per pin.*  So long as you pledge those first three days, you'll only pay $8 per pin.

*Glow Effects Simulated. It's like the talking Guess Who people, I shouldn't HAVE to say it, but I'm going to just to be safe.

TIMELINE

The goal date is going to be listed as December 2019/January 2020 is CHRISTMAS. THE HOLIDAYS. (This is why I’m leading with the penguins.) The campaign is set to end in November 1. It then takes TWO WEEKS for the funds to transfer over to me, so, roughly November 15/18.

During those two weeks it will be IMPERATIVE that everyone gets their surveys filled out and given back to me as soon as possible, so I can figure out if I need to order more of any old designs or more than I was expecting for what I’m having made. That way I can have the invoice ready to pay off the instant the cash is deposited into my account.

From there it’s a brief day or two to finalize designs, to make sure every detail is feasible or isn’t going to run into each other, then 3-3 1/2 weeks to get the pins back to me. Then it’s a mad dash to get everything filled out and in the mail the next day to get them to you as soon as possible, hopefully before Christmas.

Of course, if you happen to order only pins I already have in hand, I will ship them out as soon as I receive the funds.

Risks and challenges

While I've worked with my pin providers several times and am already used to the ins and outs of production, delays may occur due to:
*Edits needed on mold proofs
*International shipping delays (from the manufacturer)
*Shipping delays due to unforeseen weather conditions
*On the extremely offhand chance it’s TOO successful, it could lead to delays due to increased production time, shipping time and order fulfillment.
