THE STORY - HOW WE GOT TO AMERICA
For nine years we've been working with hundreds of authors, such as Louis de Bernières and Joanne Harris, and performing the book-inspired songs we've written in collaboration with Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights in bookshops and libraries all over the British Isles. We've always dreamed of taking our show over to America.
Thanks to a glowing review in the New York Times, an invitation from the American Booksellers' Association and a music and book wholesaler with a passion for literature and music, Gardners / AMS who stepped up to sponsor the tour, we're finally going. We'll be performing in 15 independent bookshops and public libraries across New York / New Jersey / New Mexico and Colorado between January and Feb 2019 as well as at the ABA's annual conference with Margaret Atwood. It's going to be a real adventure, discovering some wonderful new bookshops, meeting so many new people and hopefully sharing some very special moments and new book discoveries at the concerts in these amazing spaces.
PUTTING THAT EXPERIENCE ONTO VINYL
We know that not everyone who would like to be on this journey can be there, so we thought we'd try and capture a best-of audio experience from the tour. Creative Scotland have awarded us the funds to record many of our concerts. The album will feature live recordings from as many of the bookshops and libraries as we're able to record, transporting some of that ambience, the sounds the atmosphere, the audiences and of course the songs into the homes of anyone who'd like to join us for a taste of that experience.
We can's say at this point which songs will be on there, which bookshop or library shows will be on there, or which author's books will be represented, but we will make sure it truly is a best-of tour collection, the highlights from our 18 or so concerts in America.
Risks and challenges
We wanted to launch this campaign as we head off on tour, so you can join in as it all unfolds in real time, tune in to live streams of concerts, follow our progress and be a part of the journey in some sense. Of course there is a chance it'll all go tits up, maybe we get sent home at the border, maybe we get snowed in for the whole time, who knows, maybe all our recordings get lost on the plane (we'll make back-ups), but either way, if we make it back with the recordings we'll produce a wonderful record for you. If, for what ever reason, the recordings art there, we'll cancel the Kickstarter, as the campaign won't finish until we're home safely with the recordings so we'll know then if it's all gone to plan.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
