Quick Addendum: Recommended Games

Hey everyone,

Many thanks for all the kind words this week following our update about shelving The Black Glove for now. It means a lot.

We wanted to quickly mention three games that, if you were interested in The Black Glove, you should definitely check out.

THE MAGIC CIRCLE - It's a weird, darkly funny game made by Irrational alums Stephen Alexander and Jordan Thomas, who were responsible for -- among many other amazing things -- BioShock's vfx and Sander Cohen level Fort Frolic. It just hit Steam Early Access this week and word so far is very positive.

THE FLAME IN THE FLOOD - Just in case you missed it, Molasses Flood's "rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten post-societal America" looks fantastic and is being made by a phenomenally-talented team of former Irrational devs.

NARCOSIS - Playing an early demo of this underwater first-person survival story sold us on VR's potential for narrative-focused games. Definitely one to watch.

That's all for now. Thanks again for the support!

Best,

Joe

A Message From Day For Night Games

There are a few words written in Latin on the back of The Equinox mirror mode in The Black Glove. They translate to:

“Forgive those who struggle against fate.”

It seemed like an appropriate message to hide in a game about altering the mistakes of the past and, well… it’s come to mind a few times recently.

Okay, bad news first: We’ve decided to shelve The Black Glove for now. Good news: The team members are all working on exciting new games.

We’d like to thank everyone who lent their support to the project. Whether you checked out the project on Kickstarter, wrote a news story about it, created awesome fan art, gave advice, or even just RTed, thank you a thousand times.

As you’ll recall, we began The Black Glove shortly after our previous studio shuttered, working on the game in our spare time while juggling freelance assignments.

In October, we attempted to use raise the funds to make the game via Kickstarter. It didn’t work out, so we decided to explore other potential opportunities.

We put together a gameplay demo that showed how you used The Black Glove artifact to explore the narrative rich environments of The Equinox and unlock its secrets. We brought it to GDC and PAX East and showed it to publishers behind closed doors.

We garnered some interest, but didn’t find the perfect glass slipper we were looking for and, understandably, began to lose key people to full-time work elsewhere.

We’ve invested thousands of hours and considerable thought and emotion into the project, so it’s hard to step away, but it’s not forever.

Design legend Paul Neurath said to us recently, “In my experience, good ideas don’t have expiration dates.”

They’re words we’ve really taken to heart, so we intend to return to The Black Glove later when we can do it right.

We hope you’ll keep an eye out for our friends’ projects in the meantime:

– Animation maestro Pete Paquette has a narrative/puzzle game in the works. Follow Wolf Island Games on Twitter to learn more.

– You can hear our amazing voice cast Tara Platt, Yuri Lowenthal, Fryda Wolff, Oliver Vaquer, and Liam O’Brien in a slew of recent and upcoming games like Pillars of Eternity, Mighty No. 9, Evolve, and Game of Thrones.

– Writer Charles Soule (and I) recently contributed to Human Head’s Lost Within, a horror game for iOS and Android platforms. And if you haven’t read his Oni Press’ series Letter 44, you’re doing yourself a serious disservice.

– You can see more of Robb Waters’ amazing concept art in OtherSide Entertainment’s Underworld Ascendant, a modern follow-up to the Ultima Underworld series being created by many of the original Looking Glass developers.

– For my part, I’ve got an upcoming book (see oblique hints here), recently did some contract work on… a mystery game project, and just started up as Design Director at OtherSide on Underworld Ascendant.

And that’s just everything we can tell you about yet. Stay tuned for more.

Thanks again to everyone for your extraordinary support.

Be seeing you,

Joe Fielder

THE FUTURE OF THE BLACK GLOVE

Hey everyone,

Huge thanks for all your support this last month!

The entire team sincerely appreciates your backing, feedback, and help spreading the word.

We’d also like to sincerely thank our “extended family,” such as our stellar voice cast Yuri Lowenthal, Tara Platt, Fryda Wolff, and Oliver Vaquer; BioShock Infinite’s BAFTA award winning music director Jim Bonney; Well Liked PR’s Rachel Kane; video editors Eddie Doty and Bill Gardner; lawyer Michael Cavaretta; and many more.

So, what’s next for The Black Glove?

The short answer is that we mean to fight like hell to keep it from being cancelled. We believe in the game and you all have shown you do, too.

We’ve received a lot of questions on whether we planned on immediately starting up another fundraising campaign for The Black Glove at a lower fundraising goal.

As you know, we’ve been funding The Black Glove entirely out of pocket for months while juggling freelance work. We don’t have angel investors or a publisher.

We asked for the total we needed to guarantee that we could self-publish the game within a year with 6+ hours worth of content for $20. If we turned around immediately and asked for less without having secured the rest of the funds necessary, we wouldn’t be able to guarantee our Kickstarter backers that we could deliver the game.

But, we’re pursuing all options. We’re beginning to talk to all the publishers who have reached out over the last few weeks. We have a few other ideas, as well.

It may be weeks or months before we have news to report, but we intend to be back with more as soon as possible.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?!

We’re asking all of our backers and fans to head on over to our web-site and sign up e-mail updates and follow us on Twitter. We'll keep you up on all future developments about the game.

And if you’re in the game industry, we have a bevy of talented developers who are available for freelance while we sort out next steps. (Contact joe at dayfornightgames dot com for details.)

Thanks again for everything! More soon!

Best,

Joe

ONE DAY LEFT TO #SAVETHEBLACKGLOVE FROM CANCELLATION!

Hi everyone,

As you're aware, we’ve got until Friday at 4:30 PM EST to fund The Black Glove and keep it from being cancelled. Keep spreading the word!

We keep getting messages from backers who have said none of the sites or YouTubers they follow have mentioned The Black Glove Kickstarter and they just found out about it. Was that the case for you, too?!

If you feel like #savetheblackglove is newsworthy, let your favorite game press, developers, and YouTubers know!

You reposted this tweet more than 250 times to see previously unreleased footage from The Black Glove, so we've posted four clips of extended scenes and cutting room extras.

We've also made the following two more music tracks available for streaming. Enjoy!

Huge thanks to everyone who's backed, upped their pledge, and gotten the word out to help make this game a reality!

Only one day left! Keep pouring it on!

Best,

Joe

Hey everyone,

We're down to the final 48 hours! We’ve got until Friday at 4:30 PM EST to fund The Black Glove and keep it from being cancelled. Keep spreading the word!

Want to see unreleased footage from The Black Glove

If you RT this 250 times, we'll post an extended Hazel/Cribbage clip from our first trailer, a full gameplay Feat from The Maze of the Space Minotaur, an early Marisol animation test, and more.

In the meantime, enjoy this Black Glove Trailer 2 musical score from BioShock Infinite's BAFTA-award winning music director Jim Bonney, who graciously donated his time and energy to help us promote the project. Thanks, Jim!!

And thank all of YOU for your continued support!

Best,

Joe
