About this project
Update #6 The End is Near!
Firstly, thank you to all who have backed our project and to all who will be backing our project soon! There’s about fourty hours left to our first Kickstarter and there’s no turning back now. With all of your help the project has been an amazing success.
It has been an eye-opening experience to create a Kickstarter project. Giving constant updates within such a short time period is a process that is a bit foreign to us and takes more time than we thought. We apologize for being unable to give more updates in the past week as we were bogged down and busy with Comic Con and working on our new game, BattleBlock Theater.
At this time, we do not have our t-shirt or hoodie designs ready to show you all even though we know that some of you are waiting to see the shirt designs before committing to a pledge level. While we don’t have a design to show you right now, we can promise the designs will be look cool and feel great on our body. If you are dying to find out what our sense of style is, just head over to our online store and take a look at some of our merch. If you want to make any changes in your pledge level, please do so before the project closes on Saturday at 11:59 AM PST. YAY!
All Kickstarter backers will get the first batch of rewards and hopefully we’ll have extras after the project ends that you can purchase at our tradeshows if you decide that you are interested in the designs. We will do our best to make all items available online in the fall after things have settled down a bit.
Update #2: Belt Buckle....what do you think?
Here’s a quick prototype of the belt buckle for one of the rewards. It’s kinda cool and actually larger than how it seems in the first picture. The final size will be 3” wide by 2” high and made of two different cast metals. Now, this is what we need you to do.
Step 1 Look at your belly button
Step 2 Look a little further down
Step 3 Not that far.
Step 4 Look at your belt buckle. (if you are not wearing a belt, or pants, please proceed to step 5.)
Step 5 Think about if your belt would enjoy a new belt buckle friend.
Step 6 Go here to tell us what you think:
- If you are Canadian and know if any efficient, inexpensive and reliable way to ship stuff from the US across the border short of contacting your Uncle Vinnie, please let us know.
- We’ve had several requests for the post cards and buttons to be included with the combo packs so we are adding them to all combo packs. Yay! Begin button production...
Update #1: Funded on 1st day. Level up! <3
Some time in the middle of the night, while we were away from our desks and in our respective beds, our funding goal was met! Not sure if it was from backers far far away, or night owls who discovered this after a long day at work/school, but either way you guys are something special. Thank you to all the backers thus far who have supported the Necromancer design. We got here in one day and let’s see how many more people want this figurine in 28 days from now!
In these next 28 days of funding, and beyond that hopefully, we will keep you updated on everything involving our Kickstarter campaign. Here’s our first update! The proofs for one of the three Necromancer postcards just came in. Designs of the other two postcards will be coming soon in a future update.
About this project
The Necromancer figurine has turned into one of our most ambitious figurine projects to date. Until now we've only made smaller designs of the characters from our games into actual figurines. Having always wanted to expand the size and overall awesomeness of these figurines we have come up with this latest design. The design is complete and the prototype has been OK’d for mass production. The funds from this Kickstarter will be used for our initial manufacturing run, as well as to gauge the interest of this figurine design from people like you.
The height of the figurine falls around 9.5-10“, which hovers over the original knight figurines as you may have noticed in the video. The width, when you consider the wingspan, is around 10.5-11” and the depth, depending on the tilt of his body, is around 6.5-7.”
The sword is removable–as are the wings! The Necromancer body, stand, wings and sword come as separate parts, so putting it together does require some assembly. More photos to come in a future update.
What are you going to do with the funding?
The funds from this Kickstarter will be used for our initial manufacturing run of the Necromancer figurine and overseas shipping to San Diego.
Your prices for pledges seem to be about what it costs to make and ship the items to backers. How does that help fund the project?
The cost to produce the rewards for the pledges is less than what you might pay for them at a store in no small part because we do a lot of the work ourselves. For example, the cost to make and ship a t-shirt at the $25 pledge level actually costs less to make than that and the profit will go solely to funding the Necromancer project.
Also, we are using the pledges to gauge interest in this new figurine. Even if someone only pledges a dollar, we feel that it shows how much interest there is in the overall design which helps us sleep at night. Every pledge is a vote of confidence!
Designing and making figurines of the characters in our games is super fun, but the risky business end, well, not so much. Estimating how many figurines to produce seems to be more of an art than a science for us, so we are going to use Kickstarter to gauge interest from individuals like you because our figurines aren’t available at any major retailers and never will be. It is expensive for us to make just 500 figurines because of all the design and tooling work involved. So, we are hoping that by using Kickstarter we will be able to better estimate the number of units to order.
The more backers we have, the more figurines we can make to ensure that every fan who wants the Necromancer has the option of getting it.
Do backers get anything special that people buying from your website or at the tradeshows don’t get?
Of course! Most importantly the Necromancer figurine will cost $50 to Kickstarter backers during its funding period instead of the regular $60 price. We are also going to label the boxes of the Kickstarter rewards differently than those for the general public, so if you are a collector, your box will be different. At the higher funding levels, the figurines (or the box) will be signed by members of the development crew.
Do the pledges include shipping?
Yes, but only within the USA via standard USPS mail. See below for info on international shipping. No express or overnight shipping is offered at the moment.
What about international shipping?
Unfortunately it is a pain to ship overseas because of the extra costs and customs fees. A couple of years ago the USPS eliminated mail by sea, so everything going internationally goes by air and it is expensive. Our requested reward amounts only cover shipping within the United States. Backers outside of the U.S will need to pay an additional cost for international shipping which varies by the reward desired because of the weight and contents of the package. Please see the individual pledges below for more information. No express or overnight shipping is offered at the moment. We're currently exploring different ways to reduce the cost of international shipping.
In the video the Necromancer figurine seems a lot bigger than the Castle Crashers knight figurines, how come?
When we started this project to build the Necro figurine in the summer of 2009, the small clay models scaled to our knight figurines just looked way too small. We all agreed a larger size would look better. It just seems right that the Necro would be this awesome huge boss against a bunch of puny, yet powerful, knights.
Can I buy any of the rewards today?
No, none of the rewards have been manufactured yet. The furthest along is the Necro figurine which is now ready for mass production. But the poster, t-shirt and hoodie, etc have yet to be manufactured. We plan to start the manufacturing process once the project is close to getting funded.
The Behemoth hasn’t backed many Kickstarter projects, what’s up with that?
Many of us in the office have been supporting projects on Kickstarter for a while now but we’ve created a unique Behemoth account for this and future projects. In total the people at the Behemoth have supported over 50 projects under our individual accounts.
Who is Tom?
Tom is a co-founder of the Behemoth, like John and Dan. Before that he founded Newgrounds.com out of his perveribal bedroom. In 1999, he invented the world’s first web portal where users could instantly upload content and showcase their games and movies. He’s also made a ton of free web games that you can play on Newgrounds.
Why is Tom a paper cut out?
Tom lives in Philly and we live in San Diego and while we do see each other often he just wasn’t around when we were cobbling together our video. But it is kind of more fun to have Tom as a puppet for the video. Don’t worry, eventually we will be building him some arms.
Who’s the voice of Tom?
Anna the Red! Anna works with us designing our new line of top-secret plush products. (Shhhhh!) It just seemed most appropriate to have her voice dub over the puppet in Tom’s place. We had the puppet sitting there, Anna was holding the sock covered boom mic and it just seemed like the right thing to do. Tom loves his new voice!
Who drew the sketch that you made into the puppet?
Edmund McMillen drew sketches of John, Tom and Dan at the IGF a few years ago when all four of us won a sack full of awards for our video games. Edmund is cool and he made Gish and Super Meat Boy and stuff. Ahh, the good old days....
The figurine does not come with a case because it's fairly large in comparison to the other figurines. It's twice the size of the knight figurines! (If not bigger...) The parts do come in a uniquely dark and mysterious box though. Everyone will be dying to know what is inside...Necromancer seems to have that affect on people.
Yes! We will be putting updates as soon as we get the final designs ready. You can check back here or follow us on Facebook/Twitter/Google+ (your pick!) to get the newest info.
Unfortunately, I mistakenly did not include international shipping cost in my original pledge. Is there an easy way to pay for this at this time?
Yes! We created a PayPal page for any backers who live outside of the U.S. who did not include the additional international shipping costs on top of their minimum pledge for their reward tier. Go here and pay the requested international shipping cost so that we can ship the rewards to you: http://thebehemoth.com/NECROshipping/
