This March, The Beat Academy will bring a team of 8 of Canada's most talented music producers to compete at one of the largest music festivals in North America, South by Southwest (SXSW) in it's first-ever international team beat battle.
What is a "TEAM" beat battle?
Think of it like any sport. Canada will have a team (Toronto) and the US will have a team (Texas). Each team will have a coaching staff and trainers comprised of successful and well-known hit makers from their respective countries. The coach for Team Toronto is multi-platinum Grammy award- winning producer Boi-1da (Drake, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem and more).
Both teams will have to have complete a series of challenges for a panel of judges. By the end, one team will be crowned the winner.
Who is on the team and how were they chosen?
The Beat Academy invited a diverse panel of local TO tastemakers to choose the top 10 submissions. Our esteemed committee included:
- Skratch Bastid
- Saukrates/Bigg Soxx
- DJ Lissa Monet
- Frank Dukes
- DJ Grouch
- DJ Wristpect
- Mac (from Soundsmith)

What will the funds pay for?
It'll pay for flight and accommodations to accommodate the team in Austin, Texas during SXSW.
Is $5000 your ultimate goal?
No, but it's a start.
Our biggest challenge has been securing funds for flight and accommodations in Austin. We are asking for your pledges to secure the Team Canada house and cover flights for #TeamTO.
In total, this trip will cost us $27,150. That includes the cost of flights ($7150), accommodations ($10,400), food ($2000), ground transportation ($500) and a video crew ($7100).
Your funds will go directly to securing a house for the duration of this trip and contributing to the cost of flights. If we raise funds beyond our goal, we will put it towards a video crew to document the entire event.
Let's get #TeamTO to Austin, Texas!
I'm not going to SXSW, what's in it for me?
We will be producing a series of videos, including a short about the entire experience for our supporters. We are also finalizing details that will allow us to provide an event recap video of the event. When you pledge, you are bringing us closer to the dream of coming back home with the championship as the best hit makers in North America!
We are providing producers (a group typically overlooked or forgotten about because of the background role they play) an opportunity that they don't usually get. Having the chance to compete at one of the largest music festivals in North America can be a life changing experience for someone working towards a career in the music industry. We want to make that happen for the 8 talented producers representing Toronto.
Besides, we need to remind the US that Canadian producers are behind some of the biggest hits on radio today in hip hop and top 40 music (think Jay Z, Eminem and more) and claim the title that is rightfully ours!
Risks and challenges
Our key challenge is the cost of the trip. During SXSW, the costs increase 10-fold. For example, we would like to rent a house for the duration of the music portion of the festival. The cost to rent a house that accommodates the entire team is $10,400 USD plus taxes and fees.
Besides Kickstarter, we plan to overcome this challenge through a number of fundraising activities. We've also put up $8000 our own money to cover the deposit fees for accommodations and flights to ensure that we could get the ball rolling. We hope to get that money back through sponsorship and fundraising activities.
Another challenge is that this entire project is driven by unpaid volunteers who are running out of time and money. We've managed to successfully overcome most of our challenges, with fundraising as the last key to the puzzle. Once we're successful, our unpaid and overworked team can work on the next big project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
