About this project
Say "bye bye" to boring iPhone cases. With Bit Bead you can create and swap in limitless designs. Bit Bead allows to you express yourself, whether your thing is superheroes or cupcakes.
Bit Bead case compatible with iPhone 5/5s.
How thick is Bit Bead?
A lot of people have asked us how thick the Bit Bead case is and how does it compare to other cases on the market.
The Bit Bead case only measures 13mm which you can see sits smack bang in the middle between your slim-line bumper cases and your hardcore protective cases (well that and Craig's felt/leather combo on the far left!).
The custom case and frame allows you to use standard fuse beads (Hama, Perler and Ikea) that can be bought in most craft stores.
So, why is it awesome?
- Only limited by your imagination. Create countless designs.
- Swap designs over in seconds, no need to buy another case. Have a different design everyday of the week if you like!
- Uses standard fuse beads that are cheap and can be bought almost anywhere.
- The Bit Bead web app allows you to create masterpieces on the move!

I've always loved customising my phone to reflect what mood I'm in. Personalised ones are great but I would always get bored of the same old photo and have to buy a whole new case. I wanted to find an way to add my personality and continually change the feel of my phone without the expense of buying another or just adding stickers.
Since I was a kid I've been into 8 bit art and I've made everything from Space Invader coasters to Mario keyrings using fuse beads. Over a bowl of corn flakes my phone was sitting on the table next to a half finished Megaman keyring and it suddenly came to me - why not bring the two together? I went to work assembling a crack team to help make my idea a reality - Bit Bead was born.
Our aim was to make the case as minimal and discrete as possible so the artwork really pops! The main challenge was how to easily and reliably attach the bead artwork to the phone so that it was robust yet quick to swap designs in and out. We got to work sketching out ideas, building and testing many prototypes until arriving at the final solution. The breakthrough was fusing the bead design to a custom frame that allows us to control the bead tolerance and provides a ledge to securely hold the design when in the case. Sliding two sections of the case together holds the artwork firmly and also means the overall package can be kept as neat as possible.

How it will be made
The Bit Bead case will be precision moulded from robust engineering grade ABS/PC to ensure the best blend of impact resistance and strength. It will have a luxurious soft touch finish giving it a lovely tactile quality that feels great in the hand. Production will take place at our manufacturing partners in Dong Guan China. We have worked with them before on numerous projects. They are experienced in making high quality products for some of the world's leading consumer electronics brands.
Our Vision for Bead Bit
We would love to make Bit Bead more than just a great phone case and turn into a community where people can share their creations and access ideas.
We would also want to expand the range to include other smartphones and tablets to include as many people as possible. Unfortunately every device that we include comes with a tooling cost so should the campaign go well we will look to add more devices from your feedback. We have already prototyped an iPad Mini case and it looks great, so much room to create awesome designs!
Ross McBride - Ideas man and pixel art aficionado.
Gregor Aikman - Design lead and handy with a scalpel.
Danny Kane - Has a beady eye for detail and spends too much time on IMDB.
Craig Lynn - UI/UE guy, loves his Hasselblad - maybe a bit too much.
Bit Bead is the first product to launch via Filament PD Labs. The Lab is a product incubator/accelerator for student interns taking their ideas from sketch to Kickstarter within 3 months.
Risks and challenges
Bring a new product to market is never easy, especially one that involves complex injection moulding. Thankfully we have a great team of experienced industrial designers and engineers who have many years experience in bringing complex plastic products to market for global brands.
We also have a great supplier on board who we have worked with many times before that has experience making high quality injection moulded products in large volumes.
Even so, we are aware that issues can arise and have build in plenty of contingency to our launch plan. We are confident that we can a fantastic product by the June 2014 target date if not earlier.
Everything is lined up and ready to go and with your support we can make it all happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
