Los Angeles theatre on an international stage! Theatre of NOTE--a 501(c)(3) nonprofit theatre company based in Hollywood, California--is presenting TWO PLAYS to an international audience!
Los Angeles has some of the best artists in the world, and NOTE has some of the best artists in Los Angeles. We are thrilled to share the NOTE spirit with a wider audience and take our weird, wonderful place on the world stage!
The shows are going! Now we need your help to get US there.
We are raising funds for flights, lodging, production costs, and a modest stipend for our creative team. Except for Kirsten, who's paying her own way because... well, come on.
“If I’m shiny everybody gonna shine” --Lizzo
Why FEMPIRE? When one woman lights up in the universe, it creates more opportunity for other women to light up the universe. Both of these plays explore and storytell through the female gaze. Both of these plays have had profound effects on audiences, inspiring spontaneous laughter, tears, and deep after-show talks. The intent of putting both Mess and Cleo, Theo & Wu on the world stage in the ED fringe, the intent of this FEMIRE, is to cultivate power within the feminine self on a stage and empower others to find that potency inside of them as they watch that stage. There isn’t a right way to be a woman. You aren’t a Cleo or Wu, a Carrie or Samantha, a Michelle Obama or Hermione Granger, a Brienne of Tarth or Frida Kahlo, or a Gem or a Hologram. Chaka Khan is totally right: You are every woman in the FEMPIRE.
"Full of energy and uniqueness from start to finish" --Broadway World (US)
Lucy (Kirsten Vangsness) is just trying to work out how to be the best cool girl, lady boss, and all-around woman she can be when suddenly, the fate of universe is in her hands. Never fear! Space creatures and the forgotten women of history are teaming up to get Lucy on track. Careening through time and place on a heroine's journey with the women who are more than what the HIStorians have you believe.
"My favourite one person show. If she performs it near you, go. You will thank me." --Neil Gaiman
We all are a mess, I guess. In Mess, Kirsten Vangsness explores the non-linearity of time, visible quantum objects, monsters, kittens and Christian rock.

Risks and challenges
Getting any theatre production up and running is a small miracle. Getting two productions up and running, while traveling internationally for the first time, is not without its risks. Actors have to take time off work and say goodbye to their families for an entire month. We have to trim both our productions down to less than an hour, learn how to set up and break down our shows quickly and efficiently and publicize our show in the largest performance festival in the world. This is why we’ve been working towards this goal since December 2018. We’ve booked our plane tickets, Kirsten has been hard at work retooling the scripts, and we have a dedicated team of creatives and producers working on all fronts--marketing, travel, correspondence with the Assembly, fundraising, meeting with theatre companies that have been to Fringe before, set and costume design etc.
We've created a lot of incentives for this project since we know so many of you won’t be able to VIEW the productions you are helping. We want you to share in our experience as much as possible. Work on the Cleo, Theo & Wu comic book has already begun, our estimated delivery is in the fall but we promise it will be worth the wait.
We are so excited about participating with you in this campaign and delivering these rewards is going to be a real joy for Kirsten and the whole creative team.
