About this project
****UPDATE: WE'VE REACHED OUR GOAL****
As our way of saying "Thank You," we will make an e-book version of the compiled and completed novelzine FREE, exclusive to all of our backers at every level! Don't miss out!
WHAT IS PARABOLIS?
PARABOLIS is the name of a fantasy world, the setting and title for The Art Mechanics' first book—an 84,000-word novel-length manuscript written by Eddie Han and illustrated by Curt Merlo. When completed, Parabolis will be a singular narrative augmented with images in magazine fashion to create a compelling visual and literary experience that we call a "novelzine."
WHAT IS A NOVELZINE?
The story is about a twenty-five year-old, ex-soldier named Dale Sunday, who is hoping to find a little peace in his own quiet corner of the Republic. But when the local thieves guild appropriates his waterfront business to smuggle in agents of a secret society, all hopes are dashed. Swept into a dark conspiracy that threatens to put an end to the Republic, Dale will have to fall in love with a clandestine princess, discover that his childhood best friend has become one of the world's deadliest assassins, venture through the Wilds, aid a guerrilla resistance, and become the captain of his own submarine before he'll have any chance at peace.
Just to give you an idea of what the completed novelzine will look like, here are four sample chapters of the work-in-progress:
1) Clicking the above image will take you to our Tumblr page.
2) Below the blog title, a flash viewer will appear similar to the image above which you can then click to expand and read. Please allow time for flash viewer to load.
3) If you can not access the sample content through the above link, please message us and we will either email you the pdf files or post it where you can view them.
We will be distributing the book in two phases. The first phase will be a digital chapter emailed every week for our subscribers (backers) of the work-in-progress. Although this will include the artwork, it will be subject to minor edits prior to the second phase at Curt and Eddie's discretion. The second phase will be printing the finalized, compiled novelzine and sending it out by post.
ABOUT THE ART
With an editorial style, strong Constructivism influences, and a premium on composition (type-setting, layout, etc.), the artwork will play on the story's genre-blending setting while making the world as believable as modern history.

The completed, printed version of the book will feature extra art including a detailed map, illustrated montage between natural breaks in the story where time elapses, and fictional advertisements and cutouts from publications that would exist in the world of Parabolis.

SO HOW CAN I BE A PART OF THIS AWESOMENESS?
In order to finish this project, we need your help. The funds we raise through Kickstarter will go to securing an ISBN number, printing, marketing, and to supporting Curt Merlo full-time so that we can marry his artwork to the completed manuscript and get this novelzine into your hands as soon as possible.
In return for your help, not only will you get super cool rewards (like a weekly electronic subscription to the chapters before it's all put together, t-shirts, and even a doll--I mean, an action-figure), but you'll be a part of making one of the first self-proclaimed novelzines in history!
In the meantime, be sure to take a look at the incentives and check out our Facebook page and blog for frequent updates. Thanks again for your interest!
