We want to create a mature animated series that doesn’t have to rely on comedy to be successful, like most western animation needs to. We’re making Grimoire without the need of a large corporate studio to ensure that we can make the series we want to see, and with your help we can make it happen!
Grimoire is a dark, story-driven, mature 2D animated series, following the lives of 3 girls, Vera, Nina, and Lisa, whose lives were forever changed when they were entangled in unfortunate supernatural events. The three struggle to learn to live with the effects of these tragedies on their lives as they try to find their places in the world and fight to maintain their sanity, the one thing they have in common eventually drawing them together against a greater evil.
Our goal for Grimoire is to fund the cost of production for the first 8 episodes; we've taken all development and pre-production into our own hands, and as a result, if we are successfully funded, we can start immediately with production on the show, with animation starting at the beginning of 2017 and episodes coming out within a few months. Whereas many projects aim to fund the creation of a pilot with the intention to pitch it to a larger corporation, sometimes even successful pilots never see a full series because of networks; since we are producing Grimoire independently online, if we succeed, 8 episodes of guaranteed content around 20 minutes each will already be in progress, and you'll be able to see the results as early as spring of 2017!
Usually if you want story-driven mature animation you have to turn to anime. We're enamored with animation as an art form and want to see it do more, and to show that there is a desire and appreciation for more story-driven adult animation.
Here's the animated content we have already:
We started Studio BXR as two people with a love for 2D animation, M. N. Lam (Arcane Arts) and Dylan Case, and we’ve been working hard on Grimoire since 2011. We're hiring all independent creators and performers to make this project a reality; get to know the people we’re working with!
Most of our budget is going towards 2D frame-by-frame animation by our independent animators, with additional minimal rigging for fine-tuning. It also allows us to have beautiful background art, a full original score and theme song, our talented voice actors, atmospheric sound design, and give you great rewards while doing our best to balance quality and cost efficiency.
Twitch Livestream and Q&A Podcast
These are 2 of the early rewards, the livestream being an opportunity for anyone who receives this in their tier to be in a twitch stream with the creators, where you can ask us questions! You can ask us about the creative process, developing characters, tips for your own campaign or project, or anything else related to the campaign! After the stream, we will take the audio from it and create a Podcast of the Q&A session that will be available to all backers.
The Kickstarter exclusive wallpaper will be available to all backers. Mobile versions may be coming soon.
The Kickstarter exclusive Grimoire shirt is unisex, available in sizes S-5X in black and navy, and S-3X in black, navy, charcoal grey, purple, and maroon. Be sure to include your desired shirt size and color! If color is left unspecified, it will be assumed black. We cannot send out the shirt without a size given. Shirts will be shipped out between November and December, and may arrive from November to February depending on your location and when we have enough info to ship.
Front and back design of one of the character cards. Each set contains 10 cards, each of a different character with unique illustrations! Cards will be shipped around the same time as the shirts.
Set of 4 prints of Grimoire promo art, 12 in x 15 in. Prints will be mailed in protective tubes, and can be signed upon request. Prints will be shipped around the same time as the shirts.
Risks and challenges
Like any other Kickstarter project, this one has a risk of not being created; however, we've done all we can to minimalize the risks by doing all development and pre-production ourselves. If our funding is successful, we'll be able to start immediately with production, unlike many projects where you may not see results for years. Our greatest threat after funding is just getting the animation done in a timely manner, completing all 8 episodes with our current assets, or not having a reliable service to broadcast the episodes on, as YouTube is facing a lot of difficulty currently.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
