About

TECH HAS NO GENDER   /   TECH HAS NO BORDERS   /    TECH HAS NO AGE

This project was born with the purpose of transforming a Nepali woman into a change-maker inside her community with the most powerful tool in the XXI Century: technology.

We want to break stigmas and to prove that technology has no gender, borders or age. We want to use the education as a tool to improve people's lives.

How do we want to achieve it?

Ironhack, together with Hemper, would like to travel to Nepal on the lookout for the perfect candidate to sponsor a Web Development Bootcamp at Ironhack's campus in Barcelona. After an intensive learning program and an amazing experience, she will be able to apply her knowledge to solve a real problem back in Nepal.

We will travel to Kathmandu to choose the candidate. We will select the girl that will win the scholarship in a live Hackathon in Kathmandu. This Hackathon will be produced by Hemper together with Code Rush, and supervised by Ironhack.

During this Hackathon we want to encourage the girls to solve a community problem through technology.

*Once we arrive to Nepal, you will be able to see our everyday basis through our social media channels.

Follow us on Instagram for more content: @thealgorithmisfemale

Bootcamps are intensive and practical courses for people willing to change their careers or introduce themselves to technology. We believe that everyone can learn code in 9 weeks.

Ironhack has helped 3000 people to change their lives with an amazing placement rate of %90 across their campuses. We want to carry on with our mission to help people transform their lives by bringing technology and education closer, even to the most remote places on Earth, because we believe that tech has no gender, tech has no borders, tech has no age.

In Hemper, the second Spanish fashion brand with the international certification B Corp TM, with the help of the Ironhack team, we have developed a series of exclusive products to finance the scholarship of the chosen girl.

Our idea has been to translate the concept of the campaign into different products; We should all have access to technology without discrimination of any kind, and to represent that variety we offer a palette of different colors.

The color range is inspired by the programming console.

Materials:

  • Hemp
  • Natural dyes

These products are manufactured by communities at risk of social exclusion and dyed with the Fair Trade corporation Manushi Nepal. The backings of these cases are made by reused rice bags, a unique production system in Nepal. All the fabrics are dyed using plants such as the granada, indigo or catechu.

It has an exterior pocket and a handgrip to wear it in a more comfortable and secure way.

There is a greater tendency of women to fall into poverty, due to the higher levels of insecurity, precariousness and vulnerability they suffer because of their subordinate position to men in the gender-based systems. (The Central Bureau of Statistics Nepal)

Nepal is among the fifth poorest countries in Asia, with a quarter of the population below the poverty threshold and a GDP of $ 2.5 per capita. (The Central Bureau of Statistics Nepal)

More than 80% of women with 15 years of Nepal have never attended school and only 4% have access to secondary education. (Human Development Reports UN)

Enrollment in elementary education in developing countries has reached 91%, but 57 million children within elementary school age still do not attend school. (UN Sustainable Development Goals)

Gender equality is still not present in many university degrees. Men represent 87.9% of the total students enrolled in degrees related to Informatics, whereas women have a higher presence in Education studies, with a 77,5%. (www.rtve.es)

We found inspiration in the women who made the decision to switch to the programming field and have made wonderful progress. We would like to follow their path.

If we go back in time and take a look at the female presence in the history of computers, surprisingly, in the early years, the majority of people who operate them were women. However, in the seventies, the men took over this field and others. Men gravitated towards technology, beers, beards and Hawaiian t-shirts. Thus, women stopped feeling represented.

Male-oriented advertising saturated the tech sector. There is a strong belief that the reason stems from the stereotypes that children are bombarded from an early age, as the Telefonica Foundation and an article of El Pais stated. (www.skylabcoders.com)

  •  Ada Lovelace: who wrote in her notes, what we now experts believe as the first algorithm aimed to be understood by a machine.
  •  Tampon Run: Andrea Gonzales and Sophie Houser developed this videogame with the hope of bridging the gender gap within the programming world.
  •  Girls Who Code: A school run by women developers who have given support to more than 90k women in US since 2012.

We understand sustainability through the three Ps (People Planet Profit). This is the rule we follow; those who firmly believe that the company can be the key piece of wealth creation within the environment. With its activity having an impact in the three main areas: economic, ecological and social. And with this, proposing a different business model in the fashion industry; a model that respects the environment and people, that only by existing is able to generate positive impact around them.

Our value lies in:

  •  HEMP:   Hemp fabric is traditional from Nepal. With our production we want to value this practice, and to do this we employ communities in which this tradition is millenary, contributing so that this practice is not lost. Features:

/ Nutrient replacement

/ Capable of adapting to many crop rotations due to its substrate regeneration capabilities

/ High absorption capacity of C02, due to the resulting chemical composition with high levels of CBD

/ 1000% less water expenditure than cotton

  •  OUR WORKERS:  For the preparation of our fabrics we employ 20 women at risk of social exclusion: they come from poor rural areas and have no education. The preparation of the fabrics is done respecting the traditional techniques and processes of the country which allows us to contribute to the preservation of the culture.

1. Hemper, European sustainable fashion brand of nepali hemp crafts.

2. Ironhack, a technology school present in 9 cities around the world that offers bootcamps for web programming, ux / ui design and data analysis.

Together we launch this project within the framework of education as an indispensable tool for social change and focused on Nepal. We follow the road map marked by the UN SDGs, and specifically objective 4, Quality Education, to make sense of this mutual alliance.

ODS 4: Ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Since 2000, there has been enormous progress in achieving the target of universal primary education. The total enrollment rate in developing regions reached 91 percent in 2015, and the worldwide number of children out of school has dropped by almost half. There has also been a dramatic increase in literacy rates, and many more girls are in school than ever before. These are all remarkable successes.

Progress has also been tough in some developing regions due to high levels of poverty, armed conflicts and other emergencies. In Western Asia and North Africa, ongoing armed conflict has seen an increase in the number of children out of school. This is a worrying trend. While Sub-Saharan Africa made the greatest progress in primary school enrollment among all developing regions – from 52 percent in 1990, up to 78 percent in 2012 – large disparities still remain. Children from the poorest households are up to four times more likely to be out of school than those of the richest households. Disparities between rural and urban areas also remain high.

Achieving inclusive and quality education for all reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development. This goal ensures that all girls and boys complete free primary and secondary schooling by 2030. It also aims to provide equal access to affordable vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to a quality higher education.

Where are the benefits received going?
