About

It all started when...

About a month ago, I was fortunate enough to hear about a growing organization with a goal of continuously supporting and promoting talented and under-exposed artists throughout the country.  This organization is called RAW(Natural Born Artists), and, so far, has expanded to 52 major cities in the US.  RAW has become quite adept at shedding light on its artists by holding monthly one-night showcases for a select group of emerging, local talents in each happening city.  To be a part of these showcases, an interested artist must submit a sample of his or her work to RAW for review.  If selected, the artist is welcomed into the RAW community of artists and gains access to the vast network of resources that RAW makes available for the growth and development of its artists' careers.

WOW! My first real art show!

Soon after I learned about RAW, I hit the website and read all about its growing underground/indie artist movement.  I was impressed enough to submit a few of my own pieces of art for consideration.  That same day, I received an email from the RAW location director in my area.  After few days of thinking it over, I accepted the booking offer for that month's show!  Awesome!

Now, you might have asked yourself: "You get offered an exclusive invite to participate in one of the coolest collaboration shows in your city.. what is there to think about?!?"  Well, that's where Kickstarter comes in!

Those darned tickets!

You see, part of the stipulations for selection and participation in RAW showcases are that each artist must agree to sell at least 20 tickets(at $10 each) prior to the launch of the show.  Each artist is responsible for covering the cost of any unsold tickets.  This is RAW's way of allowing the artist to offset his/her individual participation cost.  I didn't think selling tickets would be a problem.  After all, I spent almost ten years in retail sales.  Those tickets, however, proved to be a bigger problem than I had expected.

Whereas many of the artists were able to meet their goal through appealing to a strong network of co-workers, supportive friends and family members, or even previous client contributions.. I was not as fortunate.  I faced two major obstacles: 1. My network of co-workers had all but deteriorated more than two years after a sizeable layoff. And, 2. Being an "emerging artist", I did not yet have a client/customer base from which to gleen generous contributions.

Despite creating a unique, customized version of the showcase flyer and spending many hours hand-delivering copies at local businesses around the area, I was unable to sell a single ticket.  No, not one!  Ultimately, I was left with no choice but to buy $200 worth of tickets with my own money.  Money that I really didn't have at the time.  Keep in mind, I'm still an unemployed, full-time student.  It was a terrible financial decision.  However, I knew that this would be a great opportunity to gain exposure and experience as an artist.  My kids also loved the idea of their dad being in a real art show.

Let's try this again

That show("Provocations") turned out to be a valuable learning experience for me.  I met and mingled with several other talented artists - some who had already been featured in previous RAW events.  I got plenty of positive feedback on my latest works of art.  And, although I did not actually sell any of my pieces at the show, I did speak with a few potential buyers!  That was all the motivation I needed to get ready for RAW's next showcase.  Themed: "HOLIDAY RAWk" THIS is the show that I've been waiting for!!

With your help...

This time, I promised myself two things: 1.  that I would not commit the financial blunder of buying a bunch of tickets for people who would not show up.  And, 2.  that I would make myself(and my work) memorable at the HOLIDAY RAWk show.  I have planned improvements for every aspect of my next public appearance.  I have already begun work on several wonderful new pieces as well a mind-blowing display for the show.  I only hope that you, the wonderful reader, will help me keep a personal promise.  Please, help me "rawk" RAW's next austin show.

Risks and challenges

Once this project is complete, I have three remaining challenges.

The first is to find 20 willing attendees to add to my guest list. Here's an interesting side note... once I have sold and assigned all of the required tickets, my guest list becomes UNLIMITED! That's right! Which means I can then invite however many guests I desire. And if you are on the list, you too can bring whomever you choose.

Second, I will need to fulfill all of the rewards to my backers - as promised. This is something I look forward to indeed.

And finally.. get ready to RAWk that show! !
