WHO ARE WE?
that dog. is a band that came of age in the 90’s and found new life in 2011, when a group of passionate fans inspired us to rediscover our love for playing music together. We put out three critically-acclaimed albums on DGC/Geffen Records between 1993-1997 and toured with artists such as Beck, Weezer, Jawbreaker, Blur, Foo Fighters, The Amps, Wallflowers and Counting Crows, not to mention opening for Johnny Cash at Carnegie Hall.
For those who don’t know us, that dog. is Anna Waronker, Rachel Haden, and Tony Maxwell. Our sound weaves together the disparate musical traditions of singer-songwriter confessionalism, power-pop sweetness, and post-punk aggression into an unlikely form of pop beauty. We like mixing jagged, chunky guitars with transcendent vocal harmonies. We like lyrical bass lines and raucous drum parts. We also like strings. A lot. Anna writes our songs from a very personal point of view, and we all bring an equally personal approach to how we bring the songs to life.
It would be an understatement to say the music business has changed since we were last making records as a band. But what hasn’t changed is the excitement we feel when the fragments of a song start to magically jell before our eyes through hours of hard work and exploration.
WHAT ARE WE MAKING?
We consider ourselves lucky to have grown and sustained a core fan base that shares our passion for the music we create, and, through their support and encouragement, we have set out to make an album every bit as dynamic, fun, challenging and satisfying as anything we’ve made before. Only this time we’re bringing many more years of life experience and a bunch of our favorite friends and collaborators, like Maya Rudolph, Pat Smear, Josh Klinghoffer, Josh Haden, Tanya Haden, Kaitlin Wolfberg, Andrew Dost (fun.), Steve McDonald and others, to help broaden the palette of what our music can be.
WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?
We’ve managed to self-finance most of the recording process, but we need help covering costs for mixing, mastering and some preliminary marketing. But before we can even do that, we hope to record a full orchestra on a very special song about life and loss through music called "Old L.P.". This is a first for us and we are so excited to realize our creative vision for the song and show you a deeper level to our sound. And this can’t happen without your contributions.
Help us finish and check off all the boxes!
Now that we have reached our goal, we have a lot of plans for what to do with the extra funding. Tour support! Videos! More recording!
A NOTE TO OUR FANS
We were so blown away by the powerful reception you gave us when we played our reunion shows a few years ago, and this album is a direct result of the special bond we share with you. We know it feels like we’re taking forever, but we’re REALLY excited for how the music is sounding, and we’re hopeful you’ll think it was worth the wait.
WHAT ABOUT THE REWARDS?
We are so grateful to ANYONE kind enough to contribute to our cause, and we’ve dug deep into our vault to provide a wide range of unique and exclusive offerings that you can check out to the right of this page.
Risks and challenges
As a band, we have overcome a lot of obstacles. The only real challenge we've had is time. And now some funding. Once everything is in place, we will be able to book all of the musicians and studio time needed to complete the album and its mixing. Our dedication to this album is immeasurable and cannot wait to share it with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
