The poker community has spoken. Thank you all for your feedback, we needed it.
In summary, you asked for less, much less. In fact, you asked for one thing… the shot clock.
Our new reward gives you just that. Ten card protectors to speed up your poker games.
Just like a chess clock, a single press will stop one clock and trigger the timer of the next in the sequence. The purpose is to ensure that no player overly delays the game.
This doesn’t mean that we’re giving up on the other features we offered when we launched this campaign. Below is that same offer, preserved exactly how it was, and it still stands to anyone wishing to pre-order a more comprehensive solution to some of the common nuances in live poker.
Live poker can be slow, and keeping the game flowing is always a challenge. The biggest complaint most people have with home games is that they're a disorganized mess.
Host the Ultimate Poker Night With the Floplay Card Guards!
By using the Floplay card guards, you can take your game from amateur hour to well-oiled poker machine.
For Texas Hold ‘em, it's the best way to manage the blinds and allow everyone to easily follow the action.
With a set of six or ten, each player at the table will have a card protector. This will impress your guests and transform the game, boosting the action and excitement.
So What are Card Guards?
For people that may not know, card guards (also known as card protectors) are small objects placed on top of a player's hand, usually a lucky coin, for the purpose of preventing it from being mucked or fouled.
While the origin of the card protector seems to stem from this single use case, the device has since evolved into a unique way to express one's personality at the table.
Now, we want to expand their use even more and give them some new responsibilities, and we need your support to do it. Here’s our pitch video where you can see our prototype in action.
Interact in a Way That Maintains the Tactile Experience We All Love About Poker.
As you interact, the screen and lighting will respond to represent your actions and position. No more confusion or disagreements that slow the game - everything’s super organized and crystal clear.
Is It Time To Call the Clock?
Whether you’re tired of players tanking for every decision or you simply like the idea of seeing more hands during play, the shot clock is arguably the most sought-after addition to live poker.
So far, introducing a shot clock to the home game has been almost impossible. We feel this needs to change - for poker's sake.
By using the clock on our card guards, players are always aware that the action is on them, allowing them to make sure that they’re folding in turn and on time. This means you can get approximately 30% more hands and ramp up the excitement.
Live Players are Stuck in the 19th Century.
Online poker players are spoiled for choice when it comes to collecting stats, yet live players still have to rely on feel to gauge how they are playing.
This is one of the issues we hope to solve with the Floplay connected card guards.
If you're like most poker players, your phone is with you at the table at all times. How else would you Instagram that huge chip stack? So, we thought, why not use it to analyze your performance and improve your game too?
We have not yet begun working on a way to send data from the card protectors to a device, but our vision for the future of our product is a set of Floplay card guards that can communicate with your smartphone.
Don't worry, once we start developing our smartphone app, we won't be making it as dull as the charts and graphs typically found on most poker tracking software.
Our aim is to maximize the fun of live poker, so we plan on making it simple and concise, enabling you to easily access any patterns in your playing style and even record your wins - no matter how rare they may be.
New to Poker? We've All Been There.
Express Your Individuality at the Table.
Headphones, check. Sunglasses, check. Hoodie, check. Full HD screen & vibrant L.E.D's, check.
So far we've been concentrating all our efforts on establishing the connections between a set of card protectors so until our solution for connecting the devices to a smartphone is complete, we can only show you these few ideas we came up with for personalizing the screen:
When we're done developing, we're confident that you'll be able to turn up at the casino looking the nuts with a single card protector.
A Glance at Our Development Work
Our prototypes were configured to show a typical sequence in a game of Texas Hold'em. For simplicity, we used one device as a master to send a signal to all of the other card guards, each of which then played out their role in the sequence.
Here is a video showing the functionality of our current prototypes before the casings were added.
The People Behind This Campaign.
Ben & Tom co-founded Floplay so that they could introduce this exciting new product to the world. Matt is Tom's younger brother who has helped build this campaign page, he even wrote and animated the explainer video about Bob.
To everyone who has helped this project, and to anybody still considering doing so, thank you. We really hope that this is just the beginning of our journey together.
Our thoughts on poker are that it really is one of the best ways to get friends and family together for an evening of fun and laughter. Winning matters, of course, just not nearly as much as having fun.
We believe that we can improve live poker and we are 100% committed to bringing this project to life. Choose a reward and, together, we can kickstart a new era in live poker. Thank you.
When Will I Get a Card Guard?
Risks and challenges
Currently, we are able to connect all our prototypes and run a sequenced demonstration of a typical game.
There is still work to be done to implement the application software and our flagship features mentioned.
These include programming for blind management, coding for the slightly different cash game format, and implementing a way to rectify a user mistake. Of course, there’s also the additional work that will come as we begin developing the accompanying smartphone app.
That sounds like a lot, we know, but our embedded software engineer has many years of experience and has already overcome an enormous amount of challenges. For the next stage of development, we will have much more resources, meaning coding the applications will be swift.
We've also lined up a top-class web and app development company which has an amazing team and we're confident that they will deliver the best results.
We have been developing the first batch of prototypes for the past two years alongside an extremely experienced consultant and product enthusiast from one of the UK's leading product design and development companies. He will continue to guide us in the next phase of development.
We have a solid development timeline and contract in place, and we've left plenty of room for unforeseen events in the process. If any delays or problems do arise, we promise to keep everyone updated.
With your support as backers and our enthusiasm, together we can create something really special.
