Hi everyone! Here goes:
I've always wanted to put my solo work onto real vinyl. Something small and beautiful and collectible. There is so much music in the world, I want mine to be special sonically and visually. And if you grew up listening to vinyl, there is something about making a record of your own songs on vinyl. It's a dream come true, in some ways (I think I said that in the video up there too. It is!) I have about a dozen new songs, and I've chosen my favorite four - the four I think are the best - for this 7" EP!
Care is being taken all along the way to meet that high standard of presenting this music in a way that's small (in a good way) and beautiful and collectible. I am recording in a super cool studio in Seattle (Crackle & Pop) full of great sounding tube equipment. And the guy at the board, Matt Brown, is someone I know and trust from working with before. He "gets" what I am trying to do with these recordings... it feels like a team, and helps make sure we are always moving forward when in the studio. And I am incredibly fortunate that Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering in Boston - who does work for people such Bon Iver and Arcade Fire - believes in my music enough to make himself available to master the EP for me at a truly "indie" rate. Very grateful!
The vinyl will be 70g weight (most 7" records are usually 40g - you'll feel a big difference!) The jacket will be full color, on extra heavy stock. The pressing will be a numbered edition of 250 copies.
The funding for this project will go toward the mixing, mastering and pressing of this 7" four-song vinyl EP, and to cover a bit of the rewards materials cost - the bonus disc, etc. I am paying for all the recording and tracking already (and I don't expect a Kickstarter campaign to reimburse me, I gotta keep investing all I can in this!)... so the total is what mixing, mastering and pressing will actually cost. Friends have helped a lot to make what I think are some super-special rewards for this (I hope you agree!) and I am pretty excited about those too.
I'll also be using "backers only" updates to sharing news, video, work in progress, and other things from the end of the campaign all the way up to the release of the 7" - which backers will all get before it's "official" release, of course. So things will start coming to you even before the vinyl 7" (and whatever other reward you chose) shows up at your door! And every reward will arrive with a personal hand-written thank you card to the recipient. (Hey that could be you!)
I'm so happy and excited to be doing this. Jump on board and be a part of this with me!
Risks and challenges
The biggest obstacle I encountered when I did a Kickstarter project two years ago was not knowing how much work it was going to be to make all the rewards... while working on a full length CD itself. Experience is a good thing... this time the rewards (the special lathe-cut records, etc) that could be done in advance are already in hand and just need to be personalized! This leaves me the time I'll need to fulfill the custom rewards (cover songs, etc.)
The writing and recording is also done... I waited on starting this Kickstarter campaign until I was truly ready to start it, and had done as much recording beforehand as possible. What's left is to mix and master four songs, and then have the record pressed! If anything goes astray during that process, I've built time into the project to take care of it, either myself or friends who know each and every part of the process. If anything, I may have even gone overboard in preparation this time... but it's a good feeling to know you are on track and have already done a lot of the planning and the work!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
