For those of us who can't con, there's KantCon!
Who? What? When?
We are KantCon, a tabletop gaming convention held annually in Kansas City. We strive to be THE destination for tabletop gamers to come, kick back, relax, and just game!
KantCon 2013 will be held on July 5th, 6th, and 7th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Overland Park, KS.
The costs to run KantCon have doubled since last year. We were informed by our previous venue, the Regnier Center at Johnson County Community College, that we would be unable to return there in 2013 due to our growth.
It's a good thing and a bad thing.
The benefits of being at JCCC were many, but there were a few drawbacks. Most importantly, we were able to hold the convention in a nice space in a very inexpensive way.
Now, however, our venue costs have more than doubled since last year, and we still expect growth.
Looking to the future, we have chosen the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Overland Park, KS. They are enthusiastic about working with us on this and future KantCons, and have the space we can expand into with our continued growth.
Unfortunately, with this change comes an increase in cost - hence the higher goal for our Kickstarter.
With a change in venue comes a lot of other changes. We are determined to keep KantCon a place for gamers across the country to meet and play games for the least amount of cost possible.
Breakdown of the costs of KantCon 2012
However, with the change in venue comes a large increase in costs. For transparency and honesty, we will be completely open with the costs of running KantCon, and let you know where the money for this convention goes and has gone.
To that end, the cost of attendance will be going up slightly for attendees.
In 2012, the cost of running KantCon at Johnson County Community College was $3,000 for the 3-day convention facility rental. While looking for a new venue, it became apparent that costs were going to be much greater.
We have settled on the Crowne Plaza hotel due to its location, amenities, and enthusiasm they have shown to have KantCon be a part of their facility. With these changes comes a greater cost, however. Add into that, the cost of all the nifty goodies we brought to KantCon attendees last year, and the cost of running KantCon was close to $8,000.
We want to be totally up front with you on what we're spending this money on.
This year, the cost of facility rental alone for KantCon 2013 will be $6,500, more than double the cost of facility rental in years past. To that end, we have had to draw back on the tactile merchandise aspect of KantCon and focus more on the gaming experience of KantCon attendees. The cost to attend KantCon will increase slightly, from $25 for a three-day pass, to $30. Additionally, day-passes to KantCon will be handled slightly differently. You can get a day pass to KantCon 2013 for Friday or Sunday for $10 a day, and get a Saturday day pass for $15.
The cost for vendors is still being hammered out, but we are determined to keep KantCon focused on the gaming, not the merchandise.
Thank You for your understanding as we continue to make KantCon a convention for gamers by gamers, focusing on games!
The Crowne Plaza Hotel
Casual dining and a family-friendly atmosphere are all found at The Bistro, our open air restaurant located in our hotel atrium. Stop by for traditional American cuisine and a satisfying breakfast and dinner. At The Bistro Bar, enjoy specialty cocktails and conversation.
The restaurant will be offering lunch buffet service from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. throughout the convention, and has agreed to open early for KantCon attendees for dinner service at 2:00 p.m. and running until the evening at 9:00 p.m.
The Crowne Plaza hotel in Overland Park, Kansas is offering a discounted room rate for KantCon attendees.
The Crowne Plaza is offering a discount rate on their King and Double Rooms.
Doctor Who: Tardis, Dalek, & Console
KantCon 2013 is proud to announce that we will be host to a collective of Doctor Who awesomeness! While at KantCon 2013, you'll be able to see and get pictures with a full-size TARDIS, TARDIS Console, and, provided it is complete in time for the convention, one of the Doctor's very own nemeses will be in attendance ... a Dalek!
In order to help promote the Costume Contest and make KantCon a destination for geeks and gamers of all varieties! This year, we're going across the pond to bring in some Doctor Who love for the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who! Come celebrate everyone's favorite Time Lord at KantCon 2013!
In regular KantCon tradition, we are introducing a new character to our cadre of KantCon Characters! In 2011, we introduced the world to the Jabbergluck. In 2012, we brought you Help! the Gnome. In 2013, we are happy to bring in Fancy, the Elf Mage! Fancy will help make KantCon 2013 bigger, better, and Fancier!
KantCon 2013 Miniature: Help! The Gnome by Midwest Monster Lab
Last year, we introduced an exclusive miniature of the Jabbergluck for KantCon attendees, and this year, we're continuing that tradition. Stay tuned to the upcoming Kickstarter for progress shots and news about the new exclusive miniature being designed by Midwest Monster Lab, Help! the Gnome!
In these first few tiers, you're basically getting the bare bones badge to get in the door at KantCon 2013. In addition to the badges, you're getting a few extras that you're only getting through the Kickstarter - if you wait to Pre-Register or buy your badge at the door, you're not going to get any extras, and you may end up paying more (at the door, the prices are higher).
- $10 Friday Attendee
- $15 Saturday Attendee
- $10 Sunday Attendee
- $30 Three-Day Attendee
The following tiers are for the more serious (well, Moderate, Serious, and Critical) supporters of KantCon. In these tiers, you'll get access to things like the exclusive Pathfinder adventure module we're having written for the convention this year (and it will be run at the convention, too!).
The Munchies for Munchkins cookbook is something that a lot of people will look forward to - a cookbook, professionally done (we have a CIA trained chef after all), featuring all kinds of recipes for your game group to try. Since we no longer will be featuring the Concessions area at KantCon, those responsible for all those delicious treats are helping out by putting things in this super awesome cookbook.
As with last year, we're getting an exclusive miniature made for KantCon attendees. This year, we're bringing Help! the Gnome to life with the help of Midwest Monster Labs. KantCon is the only place you'll find this miniature!
Who doesn't love more dice? If you get a tier with a dice set in it, you'll get a full set of polyhedrals - a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and a "100's" d10. These dice will be in the same style as the KantCon d6, which everyone gets in their SWAG bags every year.
Also a running tradition, the KantCon glass drinking mug is the perfect size for a can of soda, these high-quality collectible glasses will look great in you cupboard, or loaded up with dice!
- $50 Moderate KantCon Attendee
- $75 Serious KantCon Attendee
- $100 Critical KantCon Attendee
We're trying something new this year! Instead of a bunch of stuff, we're doing what we can to make your KantCon experience better. These games are loaded with some of the aforementioned goodies, but also get you in on some of the super special games we've cooked up for you at KantCon this year!
Not all of the spots are on this Kickstarter for each of these games - we've saved a few for later, just in case some of you want to get in on more than one of these. We'll offer those up after the Kickstarter is completed.
These games have been designed with the intention of making a great experience for you at KantCon - something that you'll keep with you forever. They've been painstakingly designed by some of the KantCon planners to make sure you have at least one game at KantCon that rocks your socks.
We're also spreading the love as much as we can. We're offering RPGs, Card Games, Board Games, and Miniatures Games in these epic events - meaning we're not focusing only on those role-players out there, but also those lovers of Board Games, Card Games, and Miniatures Games.
These aren't all that will be available, either! We'll add more as the Kickstarter goes on, and even add more afterwards.
At KantCon itself, there will be more games and even some charity events benefiting our chosen charity, the Michael Rohan Memorial Fund.

VIG - Very Important Gamers
Not only are you dedicated to KantCon and what KantCon stands for, but you're one of those awesome people who has helped support a local, grassroots gaming convention.
This is YOUR convention.
Not only go you get a bunch of goodies by becoming a Very Important Gamer at KantCon 2013, but you will get an exclusive, swanky invite to the super-secret Pre-KantCon Planner Dinner Party. We hope you can make it!
Delving into the VIG tier, you get a bunch of cool stuff, obviously, but, most importantly, you get a custom KantCon gaming session made just for you. That's right, you'll have a special place at the table, a seat of honor for your own convention game - made with you in mind.
Those dice bags that we're mentioning there are made by our very own Angela! They lay flat, and drawstring open and are fantastic dicebags! She'll make one for you, custom! She's done superhero logos, KantCon-themed bags, and more. They are amazing!
Simply select the tier you want, and you'll be able to select one of the game systems listed, and the experienced GM will craft an adventure just for you.
Sand and Steam Tier
This is the now infamous TATTOO Tier!
Tracy Barnett, our very own Event Coordinator and creator of Sand and Steam Productions, is once again putting his own skin on the line for KantCon's success.
That's right, you can get permanent ad space on Tracy's body, forever (hint hint)!
There are some catches, of course. Since Tracy is going into teaching, there are some restrictions, of course, but he's a good sport. The tattoo will be put on his body sometime in the year between KantCon 2011 and KantCon 2012. The purchaser of the tier will pick the tattoo but Tracy will pick the size and location of said tattoo. The tattoo must be something related to tabletop RPGs. Tracy will be funding the tattoo but if the purchaser of the tier wishes to contribute, it would not be unwelcome.
In addition to permanently drawing on a human billboard, Tracy has been gracious enough to add a plethora of goodies from Sand and Steam, including a game design consultation.
Additionally, as a super special deal, your Help! the Gnome miniature will be professionally painted by award-winning miniature painters at the Midwest Monster Lab. These guys are fantastic!
As with any Kickstarter, there is a chance we'll shoot beyond our funding goal. With that eventuality, we've concocted some stretch goals to keep things interesting.
We've designed these to specifically enhance KantCon for everyone, or our backers. We're trying our best to make your KantCon experience special this year around, and our stretch goals are designed with that in mind.
If we hit $7,500, we'll welcome the second ever KantCon Guest of Honor: Aaron Rosenberg!

Risks and challenges
We will do everything in our power to make KantCon a fun and awesome convention. We'll do all we can to make sure we deliver everything we're offering, and to that end, we're being completely transparent on where the money is going, and any delays that may crop up.
We'll be honest with you, that's the least we can do.
Yes. Individual people can go on and register as normal, but if you need to register multiple people, you can select the tier you want, so like the $30 general admission tier, and then increase your pledge amount accordingly, sending me a message through Kickstarter indicating how many badges you need. Kids 12 and Under get in at half price, so if you need one adult and one child badge, that would be a $45 pledge, etc. At the end of the KS campaign, I'll be in touch with people who pledged more to make sure our records have all the names for badges and everything.
First and foremost, all backers from the Kickstarter will receive a prize from the SWAG pile. KantCon receives donations of product from countless copanies across the globe, and we do everything we can to give that stuff away to our awesome attendees. SWAG tickets will increase your chances of getting MORE prizes at KantCon during the regular prize drawings that will be held. We don't know what the prizes will be, yet, and probably won't know specifically until the convention itself.
